Watch this first

Singletary's Press Conference yesterday

You can tell he knows how to win. You can tell the niners will be much better off with Singletary as their head coach. Once he gets his players and rids his team of "me first" guys then they will take off. Singletary coached Ray Lewis who is on of the greatest competitors as well as one of the greatest linebackers of all time. Ray Lewis is a winner and Singletary wants more players with the Ray Lewis mentality. Once he gets those guys, that team will be a force. Singletary will be a great coach in this league.

Just my opinion, But I don't think that attitude he displayed in his news conference works 100% with full grown men. I like Mike, Just not sold that is the right approach, I say that from my couch though.

I think it works because he's a hall of fame player. He already has the respect of most of the players. It won't work with certain guys and those guys won't be around if San Fran gives Singletary the a contract when this season is over.

I like the fire. In just week one, He called a guy out in public, I only think you do that as a last chance, Last resort. Respect as a coach IMO needs to be earned, Anyone can point fingers and place blame. I just think he was overboard with it.

I am sure Mike knows the situation better than I would, Just seemed odd to send him to the showers and then berate Vernon in the news conference as he did. Light a fire? maybe, gain respect? maybe. Time will tell I guess. I just never thought treating a full grown man like a child could end positively.

Maybe both Vernon and Mike will learn something from this, I hope so.

Why God, are you making me agree with a guy that is not only dumb, but an Indianapolis fan as well?

All jokes aside, I completely agree Sam. That ranting and raving stuff and calling people out just doesn't cut it with adults. I'm rather surprised (read as disappointed) that the Players Union hasn't stepped in and said something to him or the team about it.

Yea Chooch, I could understand if he had done that in private (Where it belongs IMO). About the only motivation I could see coming from what Coach Mike did would be motivation to hate playing for him. Now that you mention it, I wonder if the players union could have said something to Singletary in private.

I can't grasp the concept that Mike could gain respect from such a display, It would seem to me to work quite the opposite. I was actually embarrassed for him.

PS, Point #1, He works in mysterious ways.

Indeed he does.

As to motivation, I think that sometimes a lot of people (fans, reporters, bloggers, etc.) really misinterpret that term. I think that what a leader does now is 'focus' his people.

I have long believed that people are not inherently stupid, they are merely trying to do something that they might not understand, which can lead to someone being perceived as stupid. You don't really need to try and "take the dumb out of people" as much as you need to reinforce what they are expected to do and how to do it. I think that this aspect/attribute is what the best coaches have understood and mastered.

Great discussion by the way.

I read on the ESPN ticker last night that he pulled down his pants during the halftime speech against Seattle...that's a mark of a good coach...

Truth or Daryl?
