BJORN TOURAQUE (10/10/2008) JAX ranks above St Louis that has NFL, MLB and NHL.
I was born in St. Louis and I can tell you, Jim Hart rocked back in the day. Ok, enough of that. I have lived here now for over 25 years and I can honestly say that Jax is a great EVENT town. That is, we can really get up for occasional things like the Fl-Ga game, an AFC championship, Kid Rock on a Saturday night in the arena, an occasional NBA exhibition, but let's be honest. Jacksonville, as much as I love this town, is not a great sports town. It's not. If it were, we' sell out all the Jags games, have an NHL team and at least AAA baseball. We'd also be able to fill at least 80% of the arena for JU games.
We definitely support winners though. In that respect, I sometimes feel like I'm living in Atlanta or Miami.
NHL? No one in this city, or state for that matter, cares about hockey. Baseball too. Except for the yankees who root for the Sox or Yankees.
Hockey just plain sucks. Same with baseball.
I have season tickets for the Jags and that's all that matters. Can't help that the other losers in this city care more about their boats than they do the Jags. You think those "successful" midwest cities that have NFL teams would sell out consistently if they had as many options as people here do? DOUBT IT. |

| Why are Jacksonville residents that are not football fans "losers"? It's not a requirement that everyone share your likes and/or dislikes. I think the losers are egocentric people like you.

Read above and see. It's only football that counts. I'm a seaon ticket holder...look at me.. what other season tix for pro sports in Jax do you have? Oh wait....

Ironically, your reply kind of proves my point. How can we say we're a great sports town when we admit half of the city would rather be out on their boats on a Sunday afternoon in the fall than attending an NFL game? We arrogantly assume baseball and hockey suck and dismiss them, which doesn't exactly help the matter much. Basketball matters so little it hardly even enters the conversation and a div I team like JU does good to draw 400 or 500 fans to a game.
I say again, Jax is a great place to live and does very well with individual big events like the TPC, the tennis tourney at Amelia, or the King Fish tourney, but as a general sports town, we're somewhere south of average.

I completely disagree with your logic.... The fact is that it's something like 1 out of every 8-12 people have to show up at the game to sell out and onsidering we sell out most of the time, that would lead me to think we have a great town for sports, no? I've said this before and i'll say it again. As a season ticket holder that loves this team to death, I'm still surprised we sell out any games at all with that type of requirement to sell out.

It could be better though, for example there are still way to many people who can't understand why they should buy tickets even when the team is losing. But the operative part of the description is sports town; there really are sports outside of pro and college football. There are people here who honestly have no idea what a hockey game is and would find the idea unfathomable even if they did. Baseball does better than basketball, but I'll never forget the CBA game that I went to in the old arena that had an announced attendance of 16.
