If I had the #1 overall pick, I'd have a hard time not spending it on a guy that runs a 3.50 40 and has the best acceleration in the world. He would literally change the way pass defense was played; EVERY team would have to send a safety super deep, leaving only ten men to cover most plays. Would you be willing to spend the #1 overall pick on a guy that's never caught a football?

It would be tempting, but I wouldn't. He'd never play football. His future is track.

I would go out now and sign the guy to a free agent contract, screw the draft

First of all, you wouldn't have to put a safety deep to cover him. You would just put a physical corner on the line and jam him. The guy has never played football, and is not going to be a very physical player. It is hard to run 3.5 ( Which is nowhere near accurate as it takes time to accelerate) when there is a guy in your way making sure you don't get going.

I'd say someone takes him in the first round, just based on raw speed, but has the guy ever caught a football in his life, it doesn't matter how fast you run if you can't make the catch.

Also, there is no way the guy runs all out several times a guy for 20+ games and doesn't pull\tear a hammy either.

Another issue besides physicality, acceleration (time to top speed) and catching is whether or not he wants to play.

It's not like it was in the Bullet Bob Hayes era when you could simply draft a guy and hold on to his rights indefinitely (and yes, the same tactic of drafting an Olympic sprinter as a WR has been used before). Now with the way that the Players Association handles the draft, if you 'draft' a guy, you have to sign him within the calendar year. If you don't get him signed, he goes back into the draft pool (of which every person on the face of the planet is also a part of) and you cannot select him again.

If you draft this guy in the First, you had better be really really sure that he even wants to play football, otherwise, you are setting yourself up for disaster.

He's probably not quite so fast on grass, either....

Still fast, but it is much different,,,

This brings us back to the question I've asked before. Can he catch a football. There have been many sprinters with stone hands. Alvis Whitted comes to mind.

No, I wouldn't spend even a first round pick on him.

3.5 40?  please.  he wouldnt be even close to that.  Justin Gatlin who won the gold medal in the olympics was timed in the 4.4s at a pro day workout.
