According to PFT, there are reports surfacing this morning that NFLPA chief, Gene Upshaw has died after a bout with pancreatic cancer.

He was the face and voice for the NFLPA, and had made it quite clear that he would oppose everything from a rookie salary cap to reinstating the salary cap itself in the upcoming CBA negotiations.

RIP for Upshaw because it's a shame any time someone has to suffer such a passing.

If the rumor is true, it actually helps small market teams like the Jaguars. If the NFLPA selects a new leader who is more mindful of the current financial situation of the teams around the league, it may give the small market franchises a little breathing room.

Of course, they could also select a clone of Upshaw to replace him which would leave the divisiveness in place that we don't want to deal with.

If the rumor is false, Mike Florio and his rumor mill site will have a gaffe on their hands that is impossible to recover from.

I understand where you are coming from FBT but the way i see it, this football team (one that was supposed to be protected by the cap) built a superbowl contender and then had to dismantle it because apperantly WE were spending too much!!! then in the years where we were loosing because of cap problems the attendance dropped. now we hav ebuilt another contender with one of the lowest salaries in the league and the back end minimum of the cap is going to threaten to profitability of the franchise because of low attendance caused by the sudden drop from superbowl contention. this is a tripple wammy by intrusive regulation. this team would have been the class of the nfl had the free market played itself out and we were still filling 70 k plus seats a week. the transition from mark to david would have been seamless and we would probably have a trophy.
I am a free market guy.

That said, without a salary cap, top talent will only go to markets that bear their salaries.

The salary cap is precisely why we have built contenders.

How about some quick math.

70,000 seats x $100.00 average cost= $7,000,000.00 x10 games = $70,000,000.00

Ticket sales are a very small portion of team revenues. Not enough to support a franchise.

What machine head was saying, and what apparently NOBODY gives a flying F about, is that this story was presented as "Gene Upshaw is dead, and this is how it affects our salary cap"

Couldn't wait 30 seconds. Machine head wasn't on a high horse for pointing out FBT's Gaffe.

It's only natural to EVENTUALLY talk about his passings effect, but to mention the guys dead and then one sentence later starting talking about a GAME is a bit much. I personally couldn't stand Upshaw, but I imagine a moment of respect would be the humane thing.

I'll give FBT props, he lives and breathes and talks Football, it's his complete life, even in the lobby of the funeral home.
Maybe he related it to the Jags to place the story within this forum?

True.

Although this is a huge NFL story that would easily fit within any teams' MB home forum.

Perhaps some individuals take things that don't affect them personally wayyyyyy too personally.

There was no gaffe here.  The story of Upshaw's passing has a direct impact on how the CBA will be negotiated, and those talks and what ultimately comes from them WILL have a direct impact on the Jaguars.

Upshaw was in opposition to the rookie salary cap suggestions.  The team is currently dealing with a situation where a rookie cap would have made this negotiation with Harvey a non-event.

Upshaw has been a proponent of revenue sharing, but only so that he could get access to the books to make sure that the NFLPA got their 60+% of EVERY dime earned by teams.  That is why the salary cap exploded after the last CBA was ratified by the NFLPA and the owners, and that is why small market teams are struggling because they simply don't have the same revenue stream that large market franchises have at their disposal.

I know that you have this incessant need to be knee-jerk in any response to my posts because you're not smart enough to grasp the point.  You'd be better served to simply not respond or read them.

Once again, you're proven to be a liar when you make the claims that you DON'T read them.  I suggest you find the truth and live by it.

Keep in mind that the individual in question here is personally insulted by my camp reports.

Breeze and m_h simply struggle with putting current events into a larger perspective.

More than lack of maturity (agenda), it's really a simple lack of comprehension.  Some folks are just a little (or in this case, a lot) slower than most folks.

Thanks for that report FBT. Now if you went and put it on a site that the Upshaw family had a personal interest in, then I'd say you goofed/gaffed. I think it's entirely appropriate for this site. This is an informational forum.

RIP Gene.
