| Jags2DaDeath (8/16/2008) I don't know about ever. Hard to say if he is better than Jesse Owens.

You make the call. Don't the Bolsheviks even get honorable mention?

| Spitz did say that he may have won 8 if there was an extra event like there is now.Either way, Phelps is bringing a lot of national pride to the US and to witness it will something we can bring up yeras from now, it will hard to duplicate. Rock on Phelps the Phish.

| i was in downtown athens last night. olympics were on most of the TVs. and when the race just finished and it popped up that Phelps won, you woulda thought the Bulldogs had just won on a last second hail mary or something. the bar totally erupted.

| BTW did anyone see the 100 meters sprint? that was true dominance, th guy virtually jogged the last 20 meters and still was the first under 9.7.

No, the athletics track and field 100m sprint. No mistaking who won that one.

| Phelps is certainly impressive and the best swimmer ever, but, he has like tons of opportunities to win. They have like 10 events and within those events like 4/5/9/100 different distances! So he has soooo many opportunities. It's not that their aren't other dominate athletes at the Olympics, however they might just get the opportunity to win just 1 gold medal, doesn't mean that they too wouldn't win every event if their was more to compete in. But, he's good, no doubt.

He is the best swimmer who has ever existed.

| Best. Olympian. Ever.
In an age where everyone conditions every day for 4 years to compete in the Olympics, and he wins all 8 of his races with 7 world records, most in dominating fashion, there can be little debate that he is the best athlete to ever compete. |
