Doesn't Jacksonville usually miss most of the hurricanes, or brunt thereof, because of their geographical location?

IIRC there have been very few that have come in from the east or southeast and made a direct hit into the broadside of the Jax area.

Most sideswipe or generally parallel the coast.

(Similar to what happens up here in NJ, except even cooler waters which weaken the storms)

Congratulations to the 2008 WORLD Champions, your Philadelphia Phillies!

For the most part we have been lucky and usually don't get the brunt of most storms. Depending on the path that this one takes, we could be in for some pretty rough weather, especially if it passes to the west of us. If I remember right, the eastern side of the storm is usually worse.

As far as taking a direct hit, it's been MANY years since one has hit Jacksonville. The closest ones that I recall have been mostly south of us.

As far as the beer supply, we do have that on hand already. All we need is gas for our generators which I will pick up during the week as we monitor the storm.

Last hurricane to hit Jacksonville was in 1964.... Hurricane Dora.

Here is some info with pics to show the damage.

I never get over excited when I hear news like this, but I also don't think it could never happen.

Thanks americus, that was interesting reading.

I guess Fargin probably remembers that.

He was just entering retirement at that stage.

Jax was pretty cool looking back then, not the damage and water and stuff of course.

That picture of the Main Street bridge was nuts!!

I'm so used to seeing that in its normal state, in shots on national TV games and the like.

Two things about this storm that really work in Jacksonville's favor.

1. Projected landfall

2. Projected trek

The projected landfall is on the gulf side of Florida, making it what I call a "backdoor" hurricane. These are the most common hits that Jacksonville experiences with tropical systems, and barring all but the most severe major storms, the extent of storm related problems is minimal. It is essentially a rain maker with some wind at that point. Those 2 things just aren't the killers associated with hurricanes.

The projected trek takes this storm up the west coast of Florida, essentially keeping it out of open water for quite a while before it would potentially hit Jacksonville. Those conditions aren't conducive to maintaining or gaining strength. Hurricanes do quite the opposite, and weaken. This is for 2 reasons. First, you have taken it's fuel away, the warm ocean waters. Second, there is now an obsticle which the wind must pass through/over, land. Over ocean waters, there is nothing to prohibit the winds from blowing. On land, there is.

So, stay on top of things, and be prepared if something were to happen. But in all likelihood, it won't be worth getting overly excited about.
