| | Rashean27Mathis, the most likely scenario is Dan Orlovsky will be the Lions # 2 QB this season. The Lions only have 3 QB's on the roster. Unless Orlovsky regresses substantially in the coming weeks, he has a very good chance at not only remaining on the roster but remaining the # 2 QB. Drew Stanton has shown significant improvement since early in training camp. Yet, in essence, this is Stanton's rookie season, as he only practiced for 3 days in training camp last summer. A knee injury ended Stanton's season. In addition, with Mike Martz being fired, Stanton has had to make a major adjustment mechanically. Martz changed Stanton's mechanics last season. New QB coach Scott Loeffler adjusted Stanton's mechanics again. More closely to what Stanton did at Michigan St. Stanton clearly has a ways to go before he can be counted on in regular season game action. Regarding Dan Orlovsky, for whatever reason (s ), Mike Martz lost total confidence in him. Orlovsky has benefited greatly from the departure of Martz. Orlovsky reported to the Lions training/ practice facility in mid January. He has worked his tail off to put last year behind him. Orlovsky no longer is trying to force the action on plays. He's playing with much more confidence. When combining his physical skills and work ethic, there's reason for hope that Orlovsky can be a long term solution. Maybe even as a starter. Time will tell if Orlovsky will remain with the Lions long term, as he's a UFA in 2009. So much depends on what transpires with all 3 QB's this season.

| Thanks for the heads up. I am watching him play vs bungles right now. He looks very good, but unfortunately I just watched 2 great passes get dropped in a very ugly way, one by #80 and another by furrey. Then #10 makes a weak effort for a sideline route. Dan-O looks better than I ever remember as a Husky. To be honest, I never envisioned him in the NFL, Uconn is not really a football powerhouse obviously. What will furrey's role be this year? Is he the #3 behind johnson and williams?

| | Rashean27Mathis, I actually thought that Dan Orlovsky performed better against the Giants the week before than against the Bengals. Though like you mentioned Orlovsky's supporting cast let him down at times the other night, his accuracy was somewhat off. The fact that there wasn't an effective running game during the time Orlovsky was in the game didn't help his cause. The bootlegs were ineffective as a result. The good news is his decision making continues to be good. With Drew Stanton coming off another strong performance, the Lions backup QB situation is looking more promising. Mike Furrey rarely drops passes. The drop you mentioned was atypical. Furrey is currently the Lions # 3 WR. He would likely replace Calvin Johnson or Roy Williams in the lineup if one is injured or needs a breather. Time will tell if Furrey will hold off Shaun McDonald as the top slot WR option. McDonald, who was recovering from a knee injury, came off the PUP list 8 days ago. WR is definitely the Lions strongest position unit. The move to release Kevin Jones in March was based on the expected recovery time of KJ coming off a torn ACL against the Chiefs back on Dec. 23. With the added factors that he was due around $ 2.35 million this season and he was scheduled to be an UFA in 2009. Having said this, I strongly disagreed with the decision. KJ beat the odds last season in coming back sooner than expected from a severe foot injury. KJ has a tremendous amount of determination and focus. IMO, the Lions only glaring mistake this off-season was cutting Kevin Jones. The fact that he ended up with the rival Bears only compounds the mistake. As for Kevin Smith, I was very impressed with the way he performed in Training Camp. His focus and determination are huge plusses. Kevin Smith's run vision is his greatest natural asset. His blitz pickup skills are far better than for a typical rookie RB. He also has demonstrated good receiving skills. Kevin Smith has a bright future if he stays relatively healthy. On the other hand, Tatum Bell is performing in a manner that he wants to get cut. In the first have of the pre-season, Artose Pinner shown more than all the candidates of being part of a 1-2 tandem with Kevin Smith. Pinner has been the furthest down on the depth chart of the 5 Halfback candidates ( Aveion Cason and Brian Calhoun are the other two. ) My guess is Pinner will be moved up on the depth chart for the upcoming pre-season game vs the Browns.
