Ditch them. No other pro sport has them but football. They are outdated and the original purpose is no longer valid. I don't it would effect our walk up crowd one bit.

Every major sport including college football has blackout rules, just not as restrictive as the NFL's, and most are dependent on the television contract that they have with local and major networks.

For instance.. FOX is the only network allowed to show baseball games nationally from 3:55 - 7. So if your team is not playing on Fox on Saturday, you are SOL even if you have the baseball package.

Blackout rule is going to go away in the future because game will most likely be shown on Pay-per-view like everything else.

The baseball blackout rules only out of town fans of teams... If your team is on FOX Saturday, you'll see the game in the local markets no question.. They don't schedule anything else... Even if your game is at 1pm on a Saturday, it will be shown on the local TV networks and online.... just not on the baseball package....

Every other major league sport has most of their games on TV home and away these days... I know some teams don't always have every game on TV but those are more of a time schedule issue... Heck, the Rays have many of their games on over the air free TV in Tampa and other places in Florida and they certainly aren't sold out.... They use it to promote...

Let's see if other teams start to have ticket problems selling the last seat.. If more teams have problems selling out and face blackouts, we may see a rule change....

I'm refering to blackout rules based on attendance when I say no other sport has them.  I understand if I want to watch the Redsox but fox has the rights and they are showing the braves I'm SOL. Baseball, basketball  & hockey do not black out games in local markets based on whether or not the game is a sellout 72 hours prior to the start.  That needs to go.

Here is 2 cents from a guy who has been a fan of Jacksonville football since the Bulls. I grew up in the general area of Kent State and could be in 1 of 5 NFL town in 3 hours or less. Yeah I have been a football fan my whole life.

I can't afford season tickets. Ok that discussion is over unless someone who has enough money is willing to provide tickets for my wife and I. While your at it supply the money for a sitter for 2 kids and a nurse for the mother-in-law with Lupis. Don't forget the bus fare (parking pass would be nice but why get greedy?), at least one drink and something to eat for each of us would be nice too.  If you get me cheap seats can you get binoculars for both of us too?

I think there are 4 reasons for people not going to the stadium. 1. there is a huge financial disparity in Jax. 2. The stadium is too big for the die hard fan population that can afford the money and time. 3. Seeing a game on TV is a different experience than at the stadium. If I want to smoke/ drink/ cuss/ go pee without missing 3 plays/ throw things at the field (TV)/ stand up/ shout or none of the above I can. 4. There are those who, dare I say it to this crowd, actually prefer the atmosphere of watching a game on TV VS a stadium game.

No I am not whining just stating how it is for some.

This thread was started because it seems that the blackouts we've suffered are always the ammo behind writers saying this is an indicator that the Jags could move. Lame as it is, it has happened here too often.

I feel we won't even be close to a black-out  this season. However I care very much that the taxpayers of this city get to see the team that they helped fund over the years on TV every sunday. I care about the orginization's Television revenues and the players psyche. I won't ever knock a fan for not going to the games, because its just not mandadory. We go to every game and travel when we can, but I feel that all the games last season that were blacked-out could have been televised had the NFL had a bit more flexability.

You fall into the category many  here recognize as unable to attend and our sympathies are with you. For a vast majority of fans the opportunity to attend a game is non-existent. That's understandable.

For a large population attending the game is not as important as some other recreational activity. Ever see the golf courses on a home Sunday? There empty. Many golfers prefer to play rather than sit and watch at the stadium.

I think what this thread is about is encouraging those who are on the fence to buy a ticket before the blackout deadline so there is not a blackout and those who can't attend will be able to watch at home. We sold out the stadium with walk up crowds last year when the game was blacked out. It took a black out to get them to buy a ticket.

I find the "blackout" policy racist and politically incorrect. It should be banned permanently and financial reparations should be paid to any African-American NFL employee, management, or player and their past and future families for any lost revenue.

First of all... wishing you the best with your mother in law's lupus

Now, here is my take.

1) Financial Disparity --- I don't buy that !!!   Come down here and see the crowds at our resturants (Bonefish, Outback, Carrabas, etc).  People have money ... just need to prioritize the Jags

2)Stadium too big??? You're coming from an area that had no problem selling out the 80,000 Municipal stadium in Cleveland.  I've never heard any complaints here about stadium size.

3 & 4 ) TV & Convenience -- the advent of HD tvs support your position on this one.  Probably the most valid argument you have here.

Thanks to all for the well wishes once you get past denial it is what it is and you go on. Allow me to clarify a bit on some things.

1. By financial disparity I mean that here in Jax it seem like you either have money or you don't. To me I don't see much of a middle class. Thats a good thing it means many jobs here are good jobs.

-Side note to the NFL- you count the Navy people in the population but most have a team before they get here and many just flat out can't afford tickets were it not for the USO tickets. Tip of the hat to the Weavers for being so generous on that.

2. The teams I was talking about when I was young had been around for many generations. I think the Bengals and the Bills are the young guys. Jax hasn't had that luxury yet they are just starting to get to round two. It's growing but it's not quite here we still need time and advertising.

As I grew up there was always NFL football (well after the merger that is). Here there are people who only knew Gators, Dogs or Noles for generations. Jax is great place but in reality this is a young city with an even younger Football Team. Give it time and patience, it's coming.

cleveland is a city that's already lost their team once. They could probably have built a 90,000 seat stadium and filled it. They already know what it's like to not have football after generations of having a home team.

It's an interesting question, so I will try to refrain from flaming it too much. Instead, I will ask you this. Do you have tickets? If you do, it really should be a non-issue. In reality, blackouts will only do 2 things.

1. Keep those in the local viewing area who couldn't/wouldn't go to the game from seeing it on tv.

2. Give the national hacks something to take jabs at Jacksonville about, but they'll always find something anyway.

But back to my main point, if you have your tickets and are already at the games, why would you care if someone who chose not to go can see it anyway?

3. Prevent fans who attend the game from watching it when they get home.
