| I am curious if anyone knows the exact rules in regards to a team being able to cut a player who was just arrested.
I thought I remember hearing some time ago that the NFL players union had some sort of rule placed that a team cannot cut a player until disciplinary action has commenced by the league. Wasn't this the case with RJ Soward & the Jags? -- to where the Jags couldn't just cut Soward immediately?
Can someone please clarify?
Congratulations to the 2008 WORLD Champions, your Philadelphia Phillies!

Can someone please clarify? I'm still looking for an answer to your question, but in the meantime I happened to run across the league's policy on such incidents. It appears he will be suspended for four games automatically under the newest rules per their "other than alcohol" clause. A second infraction would land an additional six-game suspension... II. Discipline for Violation of Law Related to Substances of Abuse Other Than Alcohol. A. Additional Commissioner Discipline. Apart from and in addition to any other provisions of this Policy, players convicted of or admitting to a violation of law (including, within the context of a diversionary program, deferred adjudication, disposition of supervision, or similar arrangement including but not limited to nolo contendere) relating to use, possession, acquisition, sale, or distribution of substances of abuse other than alcohol, or conspiring to do so, are subject to appropriate discipline as determined by the Commissioner. Where appropriate, such discipline may include substantially longer suspensions than those set forth below.B. Discipline for Violations of the Law. A player will normally be subject to discipline up to and including suspension without pay for four regular and/or post-season games for a first violation of the law related to substances of abuse other than alcohol and for six regular and/or post-season games for a second violation of the law related to substances of abuse other than alcohol. A player’s treatment history may be considered by the Commissioner in determining the appropriate degree of discipline. The suspension period may be extended if medically necessary, and, if extended, may involve mandatory treatment if required by the Medical Director.

| Can't they just say they cut him because he sucks and not because he got arrested? It's not like the league wouldn't buy it.

Absolutely. His job was on the line regardless.
If anything, all this incident did was remind them he was on the team stealing their money.
.. on vince young

| | I think they can, but there would be cap implications if they did...I think... Same reason that Michael Vick is technically still an Atlana Falcon.
Matt Jones has the work ethic of a lifelong welfare recipient who is more interested in getting that check than he is in having to work for it.

I think it may be different because Vick was resigned. MJ is still on his original rookie contract, right? Plus, we do have to get down to a 53 roster. The Jags could cut without mentioning the arrest at all just like kevinjagsfan said.

| I'm not seeing anywhere where the league requires a waiting period to waive a player except where it relates to signing players off Practice Squads. Interestingly, there may be a subtle bright side to this in the event the Jaguars opt to hang onto Jones a little longer. That is, he should get the 4-game ban, and that in turn should mean that he has a roster exemption from the time he's banned on through week four. So the Jaguars can carry him as a 54th player until week five (week five begins October 1st), and then at that point they'd have to waive him or someone else. There's no real advantage (aside from fan reaction) to releasing him until his ban expires, and that would also buy more time to try and trade him if that's still possible.

| | They talked about this on one of the shows today, and the general consensus was that the team could cut him without suffering any repercussions. It might not look too good to do it until they have the entire story, and I would suspect that they will be sending a jet to get the Arkansas Crackadillo some time this weekend so that he can have a face-to-face with his #1 fan, Jack Del Rio. I would imagine that his immediate fate will hang on that meeting.
