JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - If Troy Williamson and Jerry Porter look a little faster this season, it's only because each of them will be carrying a lot less weight.

We're talking figuratively here, but there might not be two players in the NFL feeling lighter right now than these two Jacksonville Jaguars wide receivers. For the moment anyway, the controversy that has defined the careers of Porter and Williamson is gone.

"I think we both feel like we're going to get a chance to do more with our careers than we've done in the past,'' Porter said.

That's precisely what the Jaguars, whom many thought were only a pass-rusher and wide receiver or two away from joining the Colts and Patriots in the AFC's elite, were banking on when they traded a sixth-round pick to Minnesota for Williamson and signed Porter as a free agent. The Jaguars addressed the pass rush by using their top two draft picks on defensive ends Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves.

Stigma....Your posts are usually on the money, unbiased and informative. I'll admit that you are one fan that is objective and gets a point across without arrogance and pomp. Anyways, that being said....we may have a log jam at WR this year with Walker showing some great potential. Then theres Northcutt. I think the Jags want to keep MJ for another year, since he is under contract and that small ego thing, in that he was a first round (reach) pick and they don't want to part with him just yet. Reggie is getting there. So now what? Who goes? Maybe Matt. To teach a former QB the WR position takes time and the Jags don't have much. Learning to block and do other instinctive things after playing a totally different position must be a tough transition. I know, there are the Hines Wards out there, but that is rare. Guess we'll wait for training camp.

As long as Matt Jones is a Jag, I will be pulling for him to make the roster. If he does not make the roster, well there is nothing I can do about that.

Not in ranked order: Porter, Williamson, Williams, Northcutt, and Walker.  The only way Matt gets a roster spot is if they put Walker on the PUP list.  If Walker's knee is healthy enough to get reps, and he's the lightning in a bottle many believe, you want him in the game (not on the PUP list).  I think they'll listen to trades for Matt, if any are made.

Check out this comment from the bottom of the Matt Jones article: "Wow what a disappointment. But honestly it really isnt his fault. He was a quarterback they tried to convert and it didnt work. I mean it could be partly his fault or out of his control so I do feel sympathetic for this dude totally. Think 'MIGHT' and thats a quoted but very large MIGHT have had a chance to be the next Peyton Manning. You never know and Jax destroyed his whole career. A shame. Well at least he made a #### load of money for doing nothing."

a Vikings fan reaction to that article...

"every offseason he gets treated like he's going to be the next great thing and everyone talks about how he's improved so much on his catching. then the season starts and so do the dropped balls. I feel bad for Jacksonville fans who are getting really built up on this guy. boy are they going to be dissappointed."

we shall see!

Isn't that Williamson's history? Makes all the catches in shorts, but can't produce consistently once the pads come on? Mini Camp and preseason will likely tell the story with him.
