great report.. i have a question.. is training camp open to the public at all?

also, before mathis got hurt, who was starting at SS with the 1st team originally?

thanks fbt

Brian Williams

Did you see Brian and Reggie's handshake they do on the field before the drills started?

Kinda looked like something you'd see in a Red Sox dugout.  It was pretty funny.

When they were doing positional drills, like coverage assignements and stuff, Reggie and Brian were playing safety.

Yeah it did. David Ortiz and Manny like. It seems like it would be hard not to have fun playing with Reggie Nelson.

thanks guys, sounds like brian williams is still being viewed as the starting SS, but the immediate backup at CB if an injury happens in which case sensy would take over with not much dropoff if any at all... we are very deep... did i notice in someones "depth" chart that witherspoon was on the 2nd team? hmm

TMD's "predictions" so far for 08 season:
-Minnesota and Philly in the NFC championship game with Minnesota in the Superbowl
-Denver Broncos in the AFC championship game
-Houston a top 5 rushing team in the 09 season
-Houston seeded higher in the playoffs than the jags
- jags finishing 9-7 at best
- Browns finish better than the Jags
-Jags finish last in the AFC South after a bad showing in the preseason
TMD and I have a bet for $100 on the Jags wins
-Denver winning the AFC West LOL
-Bengals over Jags 24-21

Great report as usual FBT.

Any words for special teams and Joe Z?

I got Al Del Greco and Matt Prater fired, John Carney to miss the extra point, and Jason Elam to miss 2 field goals in one game.

No major developments on the Joey Z front.  They did have punt return drills early in practice, but they were using the Juggs machine to launch the ball.  A couple of guys that were hauling in the punts were certainly worth noting though.

Brian Witherspoon, Scott Starks, and Troy Williamson were doing the bulk of the punt receiving out there.  I didn't see Northcutt out there during that drill, but it may have just been bad timing on when I took a peek over there.

FBT & Su héroe,

I'm jealous of you guys!  I've enjoyed reading FBT's practice recaps for a while now, going back to last year's training camp.  Now Su héroe has gotten into the act too.  Are you guys retired or maybe self-employed so you can make your own hours?  Sure I could manage to get to an occasional training camp practice, but you guys seem to be able to make it to a lot of them.  Please keep the recaps coming.

I don't know if an actual date has been formally announced for training camp.

The sessions today are actually 1:45 each.  That includes stretching twice, doing warmup drills, and then actually getting down to the business of practice.

They normally start with individual position drills for each of the units, breaking out into DB, DL, TE, WR, QB, RB, LB.  They come together for some special teams drills in the middle of practice, then break out into 11x11.  That can change depending on how the coach will schedule practices.  Sometimes they do 9x7, sometimes 7x7, goal line drills, 2 minute drills, etc.  It seems like Del Rio tends to mix things up and make it a little different each year.  This morning when they did the up downs and cone races, that was something we'd never seen before, but it was quite entertaining to watch.
