cunninghamj (5/12/2008) As much as I think Matt Jones is a punk and just doesnt care, it is in his best interest this year to step up. He is in his contract year, and unless he has an amazing year he will have trouble latching onto anyone next year for more than the league minimum. I have a feeling he will have some renewed energy when the threat of some of those 0's gets taken away. What a Jaguar fan. "I want Matt to care more.....and he's a punk". No wonder our team gets no respect around the league. I promise you there is no bigger Jag fan than me and I don't think it is wrong at all to be upset at any one player. Do you disagree that Jones has not played up to his potential, his athletic potential? He has been horrible. He appears to be lazy and really not care. Do you think me saying that makes him play worse? Does he play that way because some people think that? Absolutely not. Again Jack, Matt's play has not been horrible. He was second on the team last year in TD receptions. Can he play better? Of course he can. Can Mathis, Barnes, Podlesh, Nelson, Williams, Northcutt play better? I hope so !!! This dump on Matt thing has taken on a life of it's own. It's the vogue thing for fans that have never taken a hit in a football game to do. For some reason Lagaman has a hard on for Matt and the robot fans have bought it. Just like they bought it when Lagaman said that L:eftwich was leaps and bounds better than Garrard. The nuts bought it and looked foolish in doing so. I can promise you, without a doubt I started disliking Matt Jones during his rookie season. All the signs were there that he wasnt going to cut it except that he was a rookie and everyone said he needed time to adjust. I dont doubt Matt Jones has potential...I think we have conluded that though you wont admit me giving him any props...the problem is he has to be on the field. You seem to forget the fact he did not dress 4 games because of what the coaches believed was a lack of effort. How do you explain that? Hypocrite.

Since I have many memories of being blind sided by a blocking fullback or TE let me add to this discussion. Your insistance that MJ was our 2nd leading TD WR is false as he was tied for that honor with DN. I'm still not sure why you fail to validate MJ's demotion by JDR. Is that agenda driven or production driven? It is well documented that RW works harder than MJ and that work paid off in RW having a fine season w\10 TDs and playing in every game save week 1. Your argument, the "wait and see" argument, if fine and fair however by offering up the roster spot you take it away from someone else. If my option is to sign a DE or DT or OT that has potential and that means cutting someone who do I look to? The player that underperforms and lacks a respected work ethic. Coaches note it, players note it and yet you would have the team continue to work with "Jesus Jones" in order to maximize that potential. What an utterly ridiculous and counter-productive position to take from, at the very least, a business stand point. I pay to be entertained by this team, and hence my money is a component of his salary. If he isn't performing I don't want my dollars in his pocket. As a human being I would love for this kid to show what we all hoped he would. Lastly, regarding you're "Leftwich\Garrard" argument, why is it that you weren't willing to allow more time for Byron to develop? Why is this patience only justified for MJ?

Stigma (5/10/2008) In my mind, Matt Jones just may be the most talented WR on the Jags roster. I think that his best spot is to be a slot WR with Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams / Mike Walker as the two outside WRs. I think that Matt Jones can split the Safeties better than any WR on the roster and is best able to make more big plays down the center of the field. In fact I believe his presence in the slot would give the two outside guys more opportunities to make catches, because he will draw more interest from the Safeties who fear his deep speed.I noticed that Matt Jones has dropped his playing weight from 238 Lbs as a rookie to 218 lbs now. Losing 20 pounds on his 6'6" frame tells me that perhaps he has rededicated himself to his craft. I beleive that if JDR did not want him on his roster Matt Jones would not be on this roster. I hear everybody on this board badmouth Matt Jones, but I don't hear it from JDR nor Shack. In my mind the Jags are a better team if Matt Jones can pull his game together and because I am a HOMER, I hope that Matt Jones does just that. I think that the 5th WR spot will come down to Troy Williamson versus Dennis Northcutt. If Williamson can show more consistency with his hands on the deep fly patterns, then he will win the competition hands down. How could Matt Jones play the slot? Doesn't the slot WR have to go over the middle a lot and be quick? Matt Jones is not quick and he already avioded contact before he lost weight. Now that he is lighter, I doubt he will be wanting to go across the middle much. They plan to play him outside. Matt could play slot, he's got a huge height advantage and he should be able to wiggle his way through LB's at this point with all that weight off, when you look at most teams around the league, they play their 3rd best CB in the nickel, and for the most part, most nickel CB"s are vertically challenged, I think Matt could be utilized better in the slot by running him sideline to sideline and by running slants and quick curls or hitch routes, give him those quick 10-15 yard IN's and OUT's or a 5 yard curl and he'll make the catch in my opinion, if you can stretch him out in the slot it will cause miss matches for LB's and confuse safties, allowing Williams and Porter to capitilize on the outside with their quickness.

The problems with placing him in the slot have already been identified. While the concept looks great on paper, the way Matt has played in the past doesn't add up to realistic success for him at that position. He's fast, but not quick, his route running isn't great, he shys away from contact, he doesn't get many YAC, and on at least two occasions last year CBS picked up on him getting completely upended on short 5-7 yard slants because he wasn't even paying attention. You want a quicker guy who's willing to take the hits over the middle after crisp route running. You also want that guy to be able to extend the play as much as possible with YAC. I'm not comfortable giving Matt that role after watching his style of play for 3 years...nor am I as comfortable with Northcutt in a pressure situation like the Patriots drop last year. Other than that, he did a good job.

Jones has done very well with his transition from college QB to NFL receiver. He has progressed despite a QB controversy and even a receiver controversy. When is Reggie going to show improvement, who will be the #1 Reggie or EW, and a new TE. Matt has plodded through all of this while learning his craft and contributing. Now is not the time to get rid of Matt. Now is the time enjoy the fruits of the Jaguar's labor.
I don't see how hating on Matt in the off season is very productive. Let him give you a reason to flame and then and only then you can kick and scream like a 4 year old with the childish name calling.
