The Jaguars ranked T-9th in the NFL with 37 sacks last season.

The number, while not terrible, needs to improve, especially in big games against teams like Indy and New England.

I have little to no doubt that the additions of Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves will help that statistic out, but I want to know...what can you realistically expect from the rookies this year.

I have Harvey pegged with about 6-7 sacks while playing over the strong side as a two-way end with plenty of tackles to show.

Groves, I think as a third down pass rusher, which will be where he is used...I'd have him pegged at or around 4-5 but lacking the big tackles that Harvey gets.

What say you.

6 for Harvey. 4 for Groves.

Wild guess.

It isn't the sacks that need to increase really.. 9th in the NFL is ok. It is all about the qb pressures and the disruption of timing. I think that is where we'll see our defense improve.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and project more sacks for Groves than for Harvey.  My reasoning is two-fold:

1) When Groves is in the game, I believe we'll see Harvey at LDE, which is a more difficult position to get constant pressure from.

2) Groves' speed is more difficult to make adjustments for, and I believe this will allow him to make a big splash, sooner rather than later.  Harvey is a player that will get the consistant pressure and be a very consistant playmaker, whereas Groves has a way to go to where he can be a play-in, play-out guy.

My projection is:

Groves: 10 sacks

Harvey: 8.5 sacks

That said, I believe Harvey will cause considerably more overall pocket disruption and hurries.

You took the words right out of my mouth.  I don't expect our number of sacks to jump through the roof.  But I do expect the rookies to apply more pressure and hurry the QB more this season.  But if you are looking for a number of sacks that I would guess I would say Groves notches 3-4 sacks and Harvey with 5-6 sacks.  I expect to be in the top 10 in the NFL which is what we were last season.

We need to hurry the QB and get pressure on him and knock him on his butt, I think that is where we will improve.

I still love Morten Anderson!

What is a "Play-in, Play-out" guy??

Wow a combined 18 sacks???!!!

I like your theory b/c we play Peyton twice a year.  We also play Big Ben and those 2 guys tend to get pass happy.  So the number could be higher than last season.  I would love to see 18 sacks total between Groves and "Hitman" Harvey, but I think that is expecting a bit too much.

Could you explain a play-in, play-out guy?

A guy that provides constant pressure and very rarely gets washed-out of a play.  I see Groves as more of a "boom-or-bust" pass rusher.  Either he gets there, or he doesn't.  I think he'll get there quite often.

I view Harvey differently.  To me, he's a guy that will consistently effect the QB...resulting in hurries, throw-aways, etc.  These guys are often difficult to quantify as many of the effects won't show in a stat book.  He'll get his sacks, but that's only part of the picture.

The main reason I pegged such a high number for these two is I believe they are both just as good RIGHT NOW as McCray was when he got his 10 sacks.  We'll have increased interior pressure from the DT's ans Greg Williams' blitz packages.  I also believe that we will be playing with a lead quite often and teams will be forced to drop back more than they'd like to against us this season.

I'm not going to disagree with you b/c that is a good observation.  I just hope they can pressure the QB.  Last season Brady sat back there like a glass window that was never even smudged.  This season I expect him to get cracked.  Peyton Manning will witness the same thing.

I think our pass rush will help our secondary also.  I am a fan of Brian Williams moving to safety.  With our pass rush, there shouldn't be much pressure for our SS to be on egg shells.

6 for Harvey, 3 for Groves.

Had I started in 2003, This team would have seen a SB by now.

Starting from right now, with the team in it's current state, I could have this team in a SB within 2 years/ seasons.

5 for Harvey, 7 for Groves. Harvey will be second on the team in QB pressures, and Hayward (8.5 sacks) will be #1. However, Groves does well as a third-down guy and gets to the QB a lot. However, he's a guy who either is driven out of the play or hits the QB--- there isn't much in between at this point.
