| Larry (4/30/2008) He is the type of TE the Jaguars like...in that Estandia, Angulo skill set. Tall, more of a wide receiver than TE.What I think is funny is that even though he's taller and a bit light in the pants, he's supposed to be a very aggressive blocker. One publication called him the "one of the drafts more physical and technically sound blockers". And some bad news for Joey Z...He's a long snapper.

Bad news for Joey Z but good for us in that IF Adam Bishop could ever make the team as the - say, TE3...it would be a coup for the Jags as they could have 1 player fill the dual role of LS/ TE3, rather than having to waste a roster spot on a guy that -just- LS's, like Zelenka does.
This would enable the Jaguars to keep another promising player on the 53 man roster, because there would be an extra spot open.

Remember, you don't want to do anything to risk a bad snap in a game given the new rule that the ball will remain live. Last year I wouldn't have batted an eye if they replaced Joey Z, but all of a sudden, this year he's gold. His lock on his roster spot is stronger than it's been in years. Bishop intrigues me. Besides potentially being a backup LS on the roster, he's got the size and blocking ability you want in a TE. If he can catch the ball well then he just might stick. Should that happen, the guys who should be worried are Angulo, Estandia and Smolko. What I don't get is why they picked up the other UDFA TE. Chris Brown is way too tiny for the position which has me thinking he's there for some other reason like to try out at FB or as a Special Teams ace.

I really don't think you're interpreting the rule correctly, no offense. I believe the difference is in relation to DIRECT snaps from the center to the QUARTERBACK. A mishandled snap out of the shotgun has always been a live ball; hence the reason a quarterback can pick up a fumbled shotgun snap and still make a pass, or the reason they sometimes fall on the ball...it's so the other team doesn't recover the ball. In the same vein, a snap that goes over the punter's head has always been live as well; consider the fact that punters will sometimes boot the ball out the back of the end zone for a safety when the snap goes over their head deep in their own zone...it's so the other team can't recover in the red zone or end zone. I don't think Zelenka's hold on a roster spot is any more firm than in past years.

Outstanding point, and exactly what I was thinking. I envied the Giants for ending up with Zac DeOssie last year; DeOssie is both a linebacker and a long snapper, only taking up one roster spot for two roles. I hope Bishop makes the roster for this reason alone.
