Trae Williams'  ball skills are attention getting to say the least.    Williams had 13 interception combined in his final 2 seasons with USF.    Including 3 interceptions returned for TD's as a Senior.

Sometimes,   stats can be misleading.   Yet,  even if Trae Williams " only "  becomes a quality nickel back and special teams performer,    I'm sure the Jaguars organization will be thrilled with the value that he gave the team.      For what it's worth,    Trae Williams was someone who was on my priority list for the Lions two 5th Round picks,  earlier in the Round.

Stigma (4/28/2008)
Here is a profile from The Huddle Report...
Trae Williams CB South Florida
STRENGTHS
Trae has nice size and strength to play his position. He has good speed and quickness and is an intelligent player. Trae has had a lot of action to his side of the field and has held up very well. He looks to have the quick twitch needed to be a strong cover corner at the next level and he's solid in zone coverage although zone was not the main DB defense used in most games that I saw. Trae looks to be an excellent teammate and exhibits leadership qualities that will serve him well at the next level.
NEEDS TO IMPROVE
Trae is not consistent with his techniques. He gets lazy and, at times, over-confident. The funny thing about this is that in a game when he makes a mistake, he loses his confidence, then stiffens up and loses his flexibility to react. I believe that all of this comes from the big brother-little brother syndrome. I feel that as soon as Trae is not on the same team as Mike, he will become more consistent. Trae is not a "lights out" tackler, but he gets the job done. He will have to play tougher when teams sweep to his side on running plays.
TALENT BOARD ROUND 2

I’m not saying this to be nasty or to make a joke or anything like that. I just feel that Trae needs to separate from Mike to spread his wings and finally be the one that everyone else looks up to, admires and takes direction from. The responsibility will make him concentrate more and become more consistent. Trae has as much ability to play CB at the next level as Mike does. Their talents may be a little different, but as far as getting the job done, I believe in the end that will be the same. This kid right now is a #2 CB with the potential to be a #1 CB. The only thing holding him back was the pressure on his college team for him to be consistent was not there, so he never had to develop that part of his talent. Now the need will be there and I feel that he will step up as soon as he realizes that he might be the most talented CB on his new team. Trae is a quality player and if he played with a little more consistency in his techniques, I would have given him a first grade talent along with his fellow teammate. To be honest, it would not surprise me at all if some team took him late in the first round. It’s a bit of a long shot, but I have seen bigger long shots in a draft. I remember when an NFL team drafted a known criminal in the third round one year. I even remember when a team drafted a player in the top five of the NFL draft after he signed with a professional baseball team; he never played -- left the club and took the guaranteed portion of the contract he signed! So drafting Trae in the latter part of the first would not be a bad move. I think Trae will be successful at whatever point he is drafted in this draft. I also think he will become consistent very quickly once the pressure is on. This is a quality kid with great talent that just needs some time to reach his full potential as a CB and a leader.

Who ever wrote that evaluation is delusional. If he thinks dude is going to leave USF where he is the 2nd best corner, and come to an NFL roster where he will magically be the best on the team.
That is some homerism if I have ever seen it.

Can you say 4th on the depth chart. 5th maybe.

Priest Holmes was the 2nd best RB at Texas.  Laveranues Coles was the 2nd best WR at Florida St.  yet at one point in time both of them were the best at their position on an NFL team.  im sure there are other examples but those are the ones of the top of my head.  sometimes guys develop later.  sometimes the light "clicks" on a little later for some.

Im not saying Williams will ever be the best CB on an NFL team but I think he was undeservedly overshadowed at USF.

The guy that covers him for the Tampa Tribute was just on with Mac and Ballou and he thought that Trae Williams could ultimately challenge for a starters spot at CB for the Jags.

I'd say that's one guy that doesn't follow the Jaguars. There's absolutely no chance of this happening.

He could...he needs a good camp though.

He could have a place as a dime back.

I believe he has a great chance, but there are a few guys he has to beat out first...

  • Rashad Moulton
  • Isaiah Gardner
  • Brian Witherspoon
  • Michael Grant

Again, I think he has a chance. However, Trae is 5-9 and runs a 4.5 40. I wouldn't be suprised if all four of these guys are bigger and faster.

Wasn't Tom Brady a back-up at Michigan?

I think Michael Grant may be moved to safety.  He played there quite a bit last year and we could sure use the depth.  He has decent size at 5'11'' and 200 lbs.  He could stand to add about 10 lbs or so, but that comes with being in the league.

Thats a big load of you know what. If Trae Williams was as good as those two make him seem out to be then he would have forced more passes towards Mike Jenkins on the opposite side, playing CB is just like playing WR, whoever the better CB/WR is out there on the field he's going to ultimately force passes thrown away from him, if Trae would have played as good as people thought, he would have been more consistent and forced the pressure back over to Mike. He didnt do that though. He did however, take advantage of Mike's superiority, he needs to thank Mike for all those INT's because he caused the ball to go in his direction. Which leads me to this point, he could barely play consistently opposite of a first round talent CB in Jenkins, so what makes people think that this guy can ever grow into a starter and play opposite of guys like Mathis,Williams and Florence? He cant, he'll be lucky, like already pointed out, to be a dime package CB and he'll be lucky if he lands the 4th spot or if he can even manage to bump Starks down the depth chart.

I would love nothing in the world for this kid to be better than where he was drafted at but im being realilistic. Special teamer at best. He will have to battle out Starks and whoever else we bring in for that fourth spot. That's it. JDR probably took him because he's close to Florida and they probably know alot about him. And they had alot of homework on the kid. In most cases this is a no brainer.

for a team that is going to man up that is bigger than you think,.  on the inside his pseed won't be a concern with the safety help.  he has terrific ball skills, and he will see the field in a dime capactiy.  i think that with the scheme we run you have to keep at least 5 CB's on the active roster so right now i think that hw is penciled in.  i think that michael grant has a shot at becoming a safety/corner hybrind and i think that this gardner kid should be fun to watch.

We will all have to make the choice between what is right, and what is easy.

Give freely unto others, be brave in the face of your enemies, love those who hate you for those who hate you will only win if you hate them back, be generous with praise-it costs nothing, love all men, and fear not for he will come.

There will come a day when the courage of good men will fade away and the tyranny of the weak will destroy mankind..., but today does not have to be that day!

remembe this day men, for it is the curse of man that they forget...
