The Mad Dog (4/19/2008) James Harris will have screwed up yet another first round draft pick.
If he picks Campbell im with you
James Harris does not make these picks by himself. All the picks are made by a committee made up of coaches, scouts, and front office personnel, mainly Jack, Shack, and Gene Smith.
You guys have to quit blaming Shack for everything that goes wrong around here.

Too bad. It goes with the territory, as Nick Nolte said in 48 hrs.
Shack Harris is essentially the GM, so the bulk of the responsibility of these picks falls on him, regardless of the fact that the input is shared.
Congratulations to the 2008 WORLD Champions, your Philadelphia Phillies!

In that case essentially any picks that have been made that worked are to be solely the responsibility of Shack right?

I've already admitted as such.
We've done extremely well in the 2nd round under this regime. Harris should get proper credit for that.
But his first rounders have mostly disappointed and his 3rd rounders are way too hit & miss. Manuwai was a good pick, but Cordova, Starks, Ingram & Walker have all been questionable picks, to date.
Congratulations to the 2008 WORLD Champions, your Philadelphia Phillies!

| let's not forget that our previous "head scouter" was let go and Gene Smith (a guy who tended to agree more with Del Rio (as the last one was basically a "yes" man to Shack)) - Smith is the new head of the scouting department.
Perhaps drafting more towards JDR's way of thinking / playing might mean some successful 1st round picks? |

Poilan has been an average drafter and poor free agent signer who's draft picks' abilities are inflated by a star QB and an excellent coach. Thats a bit harsh. When is the last time Polian missed on a first rounder? He's never missed on one as GM of the Colts.
Any analysis of Polian has to include his Carolina years, where he microwaved a successful team with blue hairs to respectabilty for all of a year and a half. Here are some of his picks with them: 1995 Kerry Collins-Quit on the team Shaun King-complete bust-numerous suspensions Tyrone Poole-average at best and undersized. Frank garcia-3rd Round Bust 1996 Tim Biakabutuka-Bust Winslow Oliver-3rd round bust J.C. Price-3rd round bust 1997 Rae Carruth-'nuff said Yes, Polian has had success when circumstances were favorable. Marvin Harrison and Tarik Glenn were already Colts before Polian arrived. The only thing he needed to put the team into contention was to not miss on Peyton Manning with the top overall pick, and Edgerrin James with the 5th overall pick the next season. When he had the ic older Irsay running the Colts while he was with the Bills, he was able to fleece the penny pinching Colts into giving up LB Cornelius Bennett. Keep in mind, I believe he was not GM with the Colts when the team initially drafted guys like Jim Kelly, Will Wolford and Darrell Talley. He became GM in 1985 and witht he number one pick, he chose Bruce Smith. The fact is, he had a lot of things going for him in both the Buffalo and Indianapolis circumstances. Yes, he maximized his opportunities, but it was easier to do with the number one overall draft pick at least twice with Hall of Fame players at the top of the drafts twice.

Jags02 (4/20/2008) [quote]Jagifornia (4/19/2008) I will list several players I think are possibilities for our first-round pick. I want you to list after each one whether you be OK with the pick or not, provided we stay at 26....
Calais Campbell, DE, Miami (FL) - OK Philip Merling, DE, Clemson - OK Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC - Not OK Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn - Not OK Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona - OK Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas - Not OK Brandon Flowers, CB, Virginia Tech - Not OK Justin King, CB, Penn State - OK Kenny Phillips, S, Miami (FL) - OK Jerod Mayo, LB, Tennessee - Not OK Dan Connor, LB, Penn State - Not OK Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh - OK Gosder Cherilus, OT, Boston College - OK Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt - OK Kentwan Balmer, DT, North Carolina - OK Trevor Laws, DT, Notre Dame - OK Dre Moore, DT, Maryland - Not OK Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon - OK
I'm puzzled why you're OK with Campbell, but not OK with Groves and Jackson. Groves I just don't think is an ideal 4-3 DE. As for Jackson, I'm changing my mind. I'd be OK with the pick. Should the Jaguars select him I'm sure they'd have good reason. I just feel that Campbell will be available, and even though he's a reach, he'd be less of a reach than Jackson.
Why is Groves not an ideal 4-3 DE? Because he's 260ish?
Take a look around the league at the top pass rushers. The vast majority are in the 260-270lbs range.
