A couple days after I predicted Cason as the Jaguars #26 draft pick, Vic said on the radio to not overlook Talib. Ever since, I've kept my mind open to the possiblility of the Jaguars selecting Aquib Talib first despite thoughts that Weaver would automatically veto any decision to draft an admitted pot smoker (after Soward, WW said that the next time he'd put his foot down and say no).

My consideration for Talib was two-fold. Most rankings list Talib ahead of Cason (although Pat Kirwan ranks Cason ahead of both Jenkins and Talib), and Talib is bigger. I thought about how Talib's bigger side might help in terms of being able to knock WRs out of bounds before they can get their feet down, but I've since learned that a major knock on Talib is his not being physical enough. After recently seeing the following Total Access clip about Talib, I'm wondering if he even deserves the high positional rankings he's received...

In particular I'm concerned about Talib's total brain farts on the field, and how he can let a 4.5 guy easily run away from him. That's not going to help the Jaguars in their pursuit of a better secondary.

I still like Cason except that I'm not infatuated with his 40-time (4.45, although Talib isn't much better at 4.42). Justin King is intriguing with his 4.31 40, and I'm tempted to go with him instead, but he's almost unanimously a second rounder in mocks. The other late first round projection is Brandon Flowers, but he's a tiny guy at 5-8 with an even slower 40 (4.54) than Cason. I still find it telling that the Jaguars are talking to virtually every top CB in the draft, but it would be nice if they had better options.

Apparently Mel Kiper Jr does not agree with Jags02 and this is what he has to say about it...

i like cason moreso than talib as well.

ive seen a lot of different perspectives.  sportingnews who isnt shy about coming up with unique rankings has Flowers rated above Cason and Talib.  actually has Talib rated pretty low.  says he allows too many catches and is a non-factor as a tackler.  ProFootballWeekly also has Flowers rated above them both but instead has Talib ahead of Cason.

the common theme with Flowers is that he is ideal for Cover 2.  strong.  will press.  physical.  just doenst have great straight ahead speed and is kind of short.  With Talib he has the better physical tools, size, and natural athleticism but just doesnt consistently play like it.  and Cason is somewhere in between.

the one thing I think that should play in Flowers favor is that a lot of these magazines that came out before the combine and a good number of guys like Mayock has Flowers rated pretty high early on.  which would suggest that on film, he looked really solid.  but he has kind of fallen due to all these workouts.  which i think are a little overrated.  unless there is some shockingly bad result(like ali highsmith's 40 time), i dont think these workout should sway one too much in either direction.

but on the otherhand, its one thing if the guy just happens to be kinda short.  or if the guy has average speed.  but if youve got both problems, do you really wanna draft him in the 1st round?

This article also points out...

the Dallas Morning News’ Rick Gosselin has him going to the Cowboys at No. 28.

This makes more sense. I believe the Cowboys are more interested in securing their RB position at #22, and then will look for the best CB they could get their hands on at #28. Fortuneately the Jaguars sit just ahead of the Cowboys. I can totally see the Jaguars taking Cason (or J. King) at #26, and then the Cowboys taking Talib at #28. Then again, the Packers sitting at #30 also really want a CB, and they may even opt to trade up ahead of the Jaguars to get one.

If I were running an NFL franchise I would think drafting an admitted "pot" smoker would be a potential waste of time. Especially first round. I don't see marijuana getting legalized and therefore I don't see any change in NFL policy, so what if he gets busted, fails drug tests, etc. He's going to be off the field and no good to the team. aka Ricky Williams.

I see Cason as a great all around player, for some reason when I see him play I think of charles woodson (dont ask me why I just do). I would certainly have no problem with the jags taking him. Hes smart, athletic and hes got heart all you need in a great football player.

Riding the Brian Witherspoon bandwagon.

VY is already a top 5 QB in this league. He just wins games. And no need for Fred Taylor or MJD we have Chris Henry... he will be better then both of them after this year. Just like Vince Young was last year. BOOK IT.

Yeah, why draft an pot-smoker?...we already have 2 on the team...at least.  Reggie's been caught, and if we don't cut Matt, I'm sure he'll get caught too.
