I would definatly love it if the darft fell that way.  Merling is the player I hope falls to the Jags.  Moore sounds like a guy that could play in the mold of a DE/DT hybrid with his size and speed.  Smith is a running back that would be a steal in the third round.

Unfortunately the cat is out of the bag on Tyrell Johnson.  There is no way he lasts until the 3rd round.  He is being hyped for the low 1st and high 2nd round now.  I hope we can get him in the 2nd some how though.

I think most people would be pretty excited with that class. But it would require a lot of luck and player falling to them.

Of course there will always be overdrafting and perhaps that will apply to Tyrell Johnson - SS - Arkansas State. Personally I think he falls late Rd 2 or early Rd 3 and I certainly would not draft him before Pick 71 in Rd 3.

Here is a profile that exposes some of his faults:

Tyrell Johnson   S   Arkansas St

STRENGTHS

Tyrell has good size, strength and speed to play his position.  He is a strong "in the box"  safety and has solid zone coverage skills to play in a two deep zone safety system.  Tyrell exhibits leadership abilities and has been a core player on defense for his college team.  He has the talent to play the free safety position as well as the strong safety position.  He should be an excellent special teams player for the team that drafts him.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

Tyrell is a very good hitter, but not a strong wrap-up tackler.  For me personally, I want my safety to be a sure tackler.  Big hitters are great, but big hitters that wrap up are even better.  Tyrell needs to add some bulk onto his frame or he is going to get injured tackling the way he does.

TALENT BOARD ROUND 4

Tyrell is a systems safety that has the athletic talent to play either strong safety or free safety, but does not have the bulk at the next level to play strong safety.  The best fit for Tyrell would be a two-deep zone system that keeps the play in front of him.  He guesses a little too much, which leaves him open to the big play because he will bite on play action and double moves.  He looks like a good kid and if he can learn to wrap up tackle, he will become a valuable player on special teams and, in the right defensive system, be a very good player.  The key for him to be successful at the next level is to learn to wrap up tackle and not just throw his body like a missile into his opponent.  If he learns to wrap up and hit, all of a sudden he adds the weapon of intimidation to his arsenal.  The players at the NFL level are not going to go down if you don't wrap up and in big games.  Offensive coordinators know that and will use it against you.  Add to that the injury factor of not tackling correctly and Tyrell will not only miss tackles, but might have a problem staying on the field. Tyrell has been an excellent impact defensive player for his college team and I see no reason why, in the right system, that he should not be just that sort of player along with being a fan favorite for the team that drafts him.

Stigma (4/15/2008)
Based upon how this mock falls out, here are my picks:

Rd 1(26): Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson

Rd 2(58): Anthony Collins - OLT - Kansas

Rd 3(71): Ahtyba Rubin - DT - Iowa State

Rd 3(89): Phillip Wheeler - OLB - Ga. Tech

Rd 4(125): Brian Johnston - DE - Gardner Webb

Rd 5(143): Jack Ikegwuonu - CB/S - Wisconsin

Rd 5(158): Dennis Dixon - QB - Oregon

Rd 5(159): Gary Barnidge - TE - Louisville

Stigma, what is the word on Jack Ikeqwuonu?  I understand he's a 2nd round talent that not only broke his leg in January, but also was arrested for stealing an XBox.  Typically, we don't get inside info regarding character issues, but in this case...Why do you feel he'd be worth a flyer in the 5th?

Regarding Jack Ikegwuonu's criminal background, this is a summary of where he stands:

2006: On Dec. 1, Ikegwuonu and his twin brother, Northern Illinois safety William Ikegwuonu, faced residential burglary and criminal trespass charges. The felony charge of residential burglary carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $25,000 fine. The criminal trespass charge is a misdemeanor, DeKalb police Lt. Jim Kayes said. Police were called to an area of apartments mainly inhabited by students, where a tenant returning home at 2 a.m. Saturday noticed his apartment open, police said. The man said he spotted two men in the apartment, one holding the XBox, which was dropped when the men ran from the apartment, according to authorities. Ikegwuonu was suspended from competition and practice.
On Dec. 15, Wisconsin reinstated Ikegwuonu, pending further developments in his burglary case. Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said Ikegwuonu had been reinstated "pending further inquiry into his case." The statement did not elaborate, citing privacy laws governing student disciplinary actions.

2007: On Jan. 18, Ikegwuonu entered a plea of not guilty to charges of residential burglary and criminal trespass. It was the initial court appearance for him after his arrest.
On April 6, the legal case involving Ikegwuonu had a hearing scheduled for June 22 in Sycamore, Ill., according to the district attorney's office. Ikegwuonu's attorney filed a motion in February asking that statements Ikegwuonu made to DeKalb, Ill., police be suppressed on the grounds he was not read his Miranda rights.

2008: On Jan. 11, Ikegwuonu's trial date was pushed back again, yet the Illinois prosecutor handling the case said the slow pace of the case against the University of Wisconsin football player is not out of the norm for her jurisdiction. Ikegwuonu had been scheduled to stand trial in Sycamore, Ill., on charges of residential burglary and criminal trespass. But his defense attorney, Deborah Schafer of Rockford, had a trial scheduled in another county and received a delay. Stephanie Klein, the assistant state attorney who is trying the case, said cases of this nature typically take 18 months to two years to get resolved.

Now the question comes up whether the guy is a bad guy or not? The way I see it is if the Jags are only investing a Rd 5 pick in the guy and he has talent, then I am taking a chance on catching lightning in a bottle. Will his past behavior hurt his contract? Most likely, but if the Jags are open minded and interview him to determine that he is not a total TURD, then I say give the kid a chance to redeem himself. Again it is only a Rd 5 pick and the Jags do have three of those in this draft.

BTW, Ikegwuonu suffered an ACL injury following the season and the bowl games but prior to the Combine.

Stigma, do you think Johnston is going to last until the 4th?

I would almost bet that it's going to take a third to get him.
