They say it takes 3 years to determine just how good a draft class is. In lieu of the upcoming draft, here’s a look back at the first round of the 2005 draft. Actual pick in parenthesis.

1.     San Francisco 49ers: Shawne Merriman LB (12): Rookie of the year, as well as finishing third in the 2006 Defensive Player of the Year voting, Merriman is a pass rushing force off the edge. He has been named to the Pro Bowl every year as well as the NFL All-Pro team. Teamed with reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Patrick Willis, the Niners linebacking core could reign terror in a terrible NFC West.
Actual Pick: Alex Smith, QB, Utah

2. Miami Dolphins: Derek Anderson QB (213):
Did the scouts ever miss on this kid. The pro bowler gives the Dolphins stability it hasn't had at the quarterback position since Dan Marino was there.
Actual Pick: Ronnie Brown, RB, Auburn

3. Cleveland Browns: Braylon Edwards WR (3):
The Browns hit on this pick. Edwards has turned into one of the elite receivers in the league in three years, and has already made a pro bowl.
Actual Pick: Same

4. Chicago Bears: Frank Gore RB (65):
The Bears get one of the best running backs in the NFL and don't bomb on Cedric Benson. Gore takes the pressure off Grossman by making the Bears' ground attack respectable.
Actual Pick: Cedric Benson, RB, Texas

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jammal Brown OT (12):
The Bucs shore up their offensive line by getting a pro bowl tackle.
Actual Pick: Carnell Williams, RB, Auburn

6. Tennessee Titans: DeMarcus Ware LB (11):
The Titans add a Pro Bowl linebacker to play alongside Keith Bulluck. Ideally they go WR, but this class is horrendous.
Actual Pick: Pacman Jones, CB, West Virginia

7. Minnesota Vikings: Lofa Tatupu LB (45):
Tatupu is all over the field and is one of the best young linebackers in the league. The Pro Bowler bolsters an up and down defense.
Actual Pick: Troy Williamson, WR, South Carolina

8. Arizona Cardinals: Marion Barber III RB (109):
Edgerrin James has been a bust in the desert and Barber III is an absolute beast. The Cards immediately become one of the most dangerous offenses in the league.
Actual Pick: Antrel Rolle, CB, Miami (FL)

9. Washington Redskins: Trent Cole DE (146):
The Redskins' defensive line is getting old and has little to no depth. Another Pro Bowler, Cole gives the 'Skins a formidable pass rush.
Actual Pick: Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn

10. Detroit Lions: Logan Mankins G (32):
The last Pro Bowler selected, Mankins shores up a shaky Detroit offensive line.
Actual Pick: Mike Williams, WR, University of Southern California

11. Dallas Cowboys: Antrel Rolle CB (8): The Cowboys get a corner in Rolle who can also play safety. The Cowboys need someone opposite Terrance Newman.
Actual Pick: DeMarcus Ware, LB, Troy

12. San Diego Chargers: Luis Castillo DT (28): The Chargers actually got Castillo with the 28th pick, but he's not lasting that long this time. He makes up one of the best front seven's in football
Actual Pick: Shawne Merriman, LB, Maryland

13. New Orleans Saints: Khalif Barnes OT (52):
Barnes is a starter on one of the best lines in the league, and would fill in for Jammal Brown
Actual Pick: Jammal Brown, OT, Oklahoma

14. Carolina Panthers: Kirk Morrison LB (78):
The tackling machine out of San Diego State helps an injury plagued Panthers defense.
Actual Pick: Thomas Davis, LB, Georgia

15. Kansas City Chiefs: Atari Bigby S (undrafted):
Bigby helps an improving defense and adds a big play element they don't have on their defense.
Actual Pick: Derrick Johnson, LB, Texas

16. Houston Texans: Oshiomogho Atogwe S (66):
The Windsor helps a Texans defense that is a couple pieces away from being a really good defense.
Actual Pick: Travis Johnson, DT, Florida State

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Heath Miller TE (30):
Miller takes away some of the attention from the receivers and opens up the middle of the field.
Actual Pick: David Pollack, LB, Georgia

18. Minnesota Vikings: Jason Campbell QB (25):
Campbell made major strides last season taking control of the Redskins' offense and is an immediate upgrade over Tavaris Jackson.
Actual Pick: Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin

19. St. Louis Rams: Vincent Jackson WR (61):
Jackson came on late last season becoming a big play receiver for the Chargers, and would look good opposite Torry Holt.
Actual Pick: Alex Barron, OT, Florida State

20. Dallas Cowboys: Nick Kaczur G (100):
The Brantford native helps a Cowboys offensive line that had too many false starts for an elite team like the Cowboys.
Actual Pick: Marcus Spears, DE, Louisiana State

21. Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Collins S (51):
The Jags take Collins to take over for Darius, thus allowing Brian Williams to stay opposite Rashean Mathis.
Actual Pick: Matt Jones, WR, Arkansas

22. Baltimore Ravens: Marlin Jackson CB (29):
Jackson helps an aging Ravens defense, especially a secondary that's banged up, aging and very thin behind McAllister and Rolle.
Actual Pick: Mark Clayton, WR, Oklahoma

23. Oakland Raiders: Roddy White WR (27):
Roddy is improving and the Raiders offense is anemic at best. They need a target for JaMarcus Russell now that Jerry Porter is in Jacksonville.
Actual Pick: Fabian Washington, CB, Nebraska

24. Green Bay Packers: Ellis Hobbs CB (84): To say the Packers have little depth at corner is an understatement, and Hobbs has a knack for making big plays.
Actual Pick: Aaron Rodgers, QB, California

25. Washington Redskins: Brodney Pool S (34):
Drafted as a corner, Pool replaces the late Sean Taylor at safety, as he has done with Brian Russell in Cleveland.
Actual Pick: Jason Campbell, QB, Auburn

26. Seattle Seahawks: Chris Spencer C (26):
Second hit of the first round, Spencer has been a staple of the Seahawks’ offensive line.
Actual Pick: Same

27. Atlanta Falcons: Aaron Rodgers QB (24): Rodgers has had limited playing time in Green Bay, and the Falcons are desperate after the Mike Vick debacle.
Actual Pick: Roddy White, WR, Alabama at Birmingham

28. San Diego Chargers: Thomas Davis LB (14):
The Chargers have one of the most complete rosters in the league without a lot of holes, so they go BAP and take the converted safety.
Actual Pick: Luis Castillo, DT, Northwestern

29. Indianapolis Colts: Barrett Ruud LB (36):
The Colts upgrade their linebacking core with the former Cornhusker who can step in and make an immediate impact.
Actual Pick: Marlin Jackson, CB, Michigan

30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Barron OT (19):
Barron has started his he was drafted, despite having more false starts than entire team’s offensive line in one year.
Actual Pick: Heath Miller, TE, Virginia

31. Philadelphia Eagles: Reggie Brown WR (35):
The Eagles are starved for receivers and if unfortunately for them, Brown is the best one available.
Actual Pick: Mike Patterson, DT, University of Southern California

32. New England Patriots: Corey Webster CB (43):
The Patriots have huge holes in a secondary that faces a lot of passes because they’re always in the lead, and Webster’s the best of the rest.
Actual Pick: Logan Mankins, G, Fresno State

This was a pretty bad draft with a lot of busts in the first round. Six wide receivers were taken in the first round and one of them has turned out to be decent (Edwards). A lot of linebackers and running backs taken in the re-draft, showing strength in those areas. Thoughts?

Interesting.  Although I don't agree with all the comments.  For example, Miller was the right pick for the Steelers and Mankins was the right pick for the Patriots.  Both have made significant contributions to their teams.

Once again first round WR didn't fair that well.  Yes, interesting, at the very least.

That was a pretty weak draft overall. Anybody notice how high Khalif Barnes went? And where is Ronnie Brown?

Wow.  The GM is now "cow manure".  It's "not personal" though, right TMD?  You are truly a douche.

Nice way to burn time there...this is a crap exercise. I'm sure that Arthur Blank knew Vick was fighting dogs in 2005 and Jeff Fisher had some insight that gave him the feeling Pacman would be eventually known as "The rainmaker"

Hindsight is truly 20/20

we need immediate help with pass rush

Caldrac (2/6/2008)
We need a pass rusher though. No doubt.

Shack Harris for executive of the year!!!

espn recently wrote an article regrading the 05 draft.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft08/news/story?id=3333998&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1

i was surprised our draft remained at a C.  especially considering youd think more weight would be carried at the top of the draft.  but i guess most of those players are still in the league which does say something.
