just a hunch.. but surprisingly booting Byron just 9 days before the start of the season might have taken the wind form his sails and possibly pissed him off a bit.

Possibly.  The rest of the team seemed to bounce back from it ok though.

Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.

It seems to me that Matt Jones had very similar stats in 2006 to Reggie. So he had an off year in 2007, not playing much and maybe getting in the doghouse. I still think the comments about him only being a wide reciever for three seasons compared to 7 or more make sense. To those that say they don't need 5 years to get up to speed at their position, I would assert that they are not competing in quite the same league as the NFL. I think we will keep 6 wide receivers, and if Matt plays his all during training camp, he will be around for the regular season. I was stunned when the pick was announced in the draft, and thought it was a gamble. It still is, but we really don't have much to lose at this point by just seeing how it plays out. Then again, I am not grumpy, as I didn't buy his jersey.

We lost two games, OMG, let's all cry!!! Wah, wah..

All this does seem to be coming down on Matt Jones the same way it did Leftwich.

I think Leftwich's desire to play did come into question. Didn't several stories surface that the team wanted him to work with different trainers and mechanics coaches, regarded as atleast among the best in the business if not the best in the business, and Leftwich refused?

The fact Jones caught 8 passes for 135 yards or whatever it was in the season finale adds to the arguement he can still play, but career wise I do not necessarily see alot of motivation for other teams to pick him up. I think he's in a worse situation as far as that is concerned than Leftwich was.

Leftwich had the Marshall story and his success as a starting QB in his favor and Matt Jones essentially has run of the mill third, fourth and fifth slot WR stats in his corner, which isn't necessarily that bad, but I think the timing of everyting happening might not necessarily play into his favor.

I hope if he does leave Jacksonville that he gets signed by another team and does atleast as well as he's done with the Jags. His still putting up better numbers than some other fourth and fifth slot guys around the league.

Didn't someone signed Sammy Parker in free agency? I think Jones has much better numbers than Parker career-wise, so there is hope.

Considering that we all know that Jack can admit to his mistakes, it is not looking good for ol #18..

Matt Jones has the work ethic of a lifelong welfare recipient who is more interested in getting that check than he is in having to work for it.

The difference between Leftwich and Jones (seemingly) is that Leftwich had all the heart without question and some stubbornness along with not the most natural athletic ability in the world.

Jones has some stubbornness, great natural ability, and is lacking heart.

In my opinion Leftwich had the Jaguar mentality as far as being a competitor goes, and MJ does not. Let him prove me (and everyone else) wrong.

Out of curiosity, where does this assumption come from that Matt Jones has this amazing "natural ability"?

His combine times?

How many people on this very message board poo-poo combine times when talking about player abilities in the NFL?

What "natural ability" has this guy EVER shown besides his combine times? Good hands, er, hand? no. Blistering speed? No. Good cuts? No. Leaping ability to the ball? No.

What then?

His work with a speed coach leading up to the combine has been well documented. What good has it done in the NFL?

Combine times combined (get it) with the fact that he HAS made some great plays. Unfortunately the 'WTF' plays are about equal to the great plays. That's why people think it's in his head/heart. heheh

I've always said that he'll make you slap your forehead more often than cheer in 90% of his games.  He does just enough not to get fired.
