The NFL’s two most experienced referees will not be returning to the field in 2008, as Larry Nemmers is becoming the NFL’s replay director and Gerry Austin, who serves as Conference USA director of officials, is leaving the league.

Austin had been an on-field official for 26 years, Nemmers for 23. NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira said they will be replaced by Carl Cheffers and Al Riveron, both of whom were side judges last year.

IMO,tThis guy was the worst and seemed so lost mos of the time. I will not be sad he is gone. I wish the other Larry "what's his name" would leave, too. The one who blew the coin flip call that time.

Austin is horrid, horrid, horrid. I used to cringe knowing he was calling one of our games. Thank god he is gone.

jagabc6893 ,    I believe you are thinking of Phil Luckett,  regarding the coin flip.

I completely agree with you and the others who expressed that Gerry Austin was nothing short of a disaster as a Referee.     Austin's replay reversal on a Marcus Pollard apparent TD in 2005 was arguably the worst replay reversal call in NFL history.       Even objective Bucs fans would have to admit that their team got a gift.      Austin's reversal in the Jags 2006 opener vs. Dallas cost Brian Williams an interception.    Another horrific call.

This is good news.

I feel bad for wanting a guy to leave something he probably enjoys, but he has made some horrendous calls.

Yeah, that is the guy.  Luckett.  He is also terrible and should get another hobby.  The head official who did the Super Bowl this year seems to be one of the best in the business.  We need more like him.
