where do you put phillips. he is not a strong safety and he is not athletic enough to unseat nelson. i odn't get this idea of drafting a safety high. you have to really be a baller to be a first round safety by the nature of the position. last year you had landry griffin and nelson who were all genetic freaks for the position and all had corner skill sets respectively. i would hate to reach for phillips out of percieved need just to cut geralsd sensabaugh or have him as a dime back with the three ten millio dollar bonus cases at cornerback. i think that you already have williams and sensy competing for the start at strong, reggie is the free for a long time, there will be depth at the position with the loser of the battle between sensy and willaims and i don't think that phillips is the type of player that you just have to take based on his value. i think that you can find pure depth at the safety position later in the draft and i don't see a sfety in this draft that would crack the lineup.

I see a need to draft a safety early because of questions about Sensabaugh. He had surgery on both shoulders for torn labrums (keep thinking about Boselli's lingering problems) and when he began the season as a starter last year, he did not look that great. Also, I am still not convinced Brian Williams is going to be tried at Strong Safety. Plus, we have no quality depth at safety, unless they like Fudge that much. What would you rather have Fudge or Kenny Phillips?

Vic finally reported on Del Rio and moving Williams to SS.  While JDR did not say absolutely not, he did indicate that Williams would be staying at corner and Florence would be a 3rd CB.  That sounds like Florence to nickel back.

Assuming that Fudge will not make the team that gives us 3 openings in the defensive backfield.  That is 2 S and the #4 CB.  One of those S needs to be at a minimum capable of starting for Nelson or Sensabaugh for a couple games.  My preference is to draft a starting SS not later than round 3.  Sensabaugh would then become the primary backup S.

Personally, I'd take Phillips in round 1. I think he would do well next to Reggie Nelson. Sounds like an awesome duo to me. If he's not ready to start in the opener, we'd have Sensabaugh, but he would be able to be our long-term solution at safety. I don't like how he has us taking Campbell. We need someone to step in and immediately have an impact off the edge, and I just don't think Campbell is ready to do that. I agree with the Phillips and Groves picks. I don't know if Groves will be there, but if he is, I'd take him in round 2. Maybe we trade up a couple of spots if Laws is going to be there. It might not be a bad idea to use some of our picks to trade for a second, 2nd round pick.
