Mike Peterson - LB - Jacksonville Jaguars
Apr 1, 2008
Coach Jack Del Rio says Mike Peterson will return as the Jaguars' starting middle linebacker this year.
Peterson is due $4.6 million in 2008, the last year of his contract. With Daryl Smith also locked into a starting role, Justin Durant and Clint Ingram will battle outside. If Durant wins, Smith may have to move to the strong side.

| There was an article on the main page this morning with a little Q&A with Del Rio at the owner's meetings. He mentioned that in the article, but the site has since taken it down I guess?

So who does everyone think should be the third LB? Durant or Ingram? I'd have to go with Durant.

He described Durant and Ingram as "good" players and daryl Smith as "outstanding" for what its worth.

| | I really thought Peterson would be gone this year before they paid him that big bonus in the beginning of March. Guess they will give him one more year at least. In that article on the front page, Del Rio also mentions more than once that they are "not done adding players whether it be through the draft or trade."

| | And Byron Leftwich will be the starting QB going into '07...Nothing is certain til 9/7/08. He's got 3 young & HEALTHY guys at his position who all stepped up in his absence last season including the post-season. Plus Durant is a stud in the making, how are you gonna willingly keep him off the field? If I was Mike P. I wouldn't take too much ease with those words.
My little girl has her teal & black on, how bout your kid?

| | If M. Peterson can maintain the consistent level that he has shown over the past few years in both practice and play, I would not be surprised to see him sticking around through all of '08 and possibly get himself a contract extension/re-signing for '09 and '10. The thing about M. Peterson's game is that it is built on speed and instincts, but those things allow for his greatest ability, his tackling. He is always quick to the ball, but when he gets there, the runner goes down, pretty much everytime, and that is what has made him such a good MLB for this team. He understands and performs extremely well in this Defense and it is very rare to see him miss a tackle as long as he isn't hindered the way that he was vs. New England in 2005 with that club on his hand. I think that that game is a big reason why J. Del Rio was so hesitant about having him come back into the starting lineup. If he can't tackle, all of his speed and instincts don't do him, or anyone else for that matter, much good. If he does not lose a step this year, I think that his presence provides for so much flexibility with the LB corps because now you have yourself four starting caliber LB's on the roster. And with the depleted Defensive Line, you need as much help from your LB's that you can get. Now we have ourselves four guys that can pretty much play all three downs. Now if some team out there (Atlanta maybe?) comes around and wants to give us something phenomenal for him (one of those three Second Rounders would be nice) then trade him and thanks for the time Mike. Otherwise, there is no reason to not have him here for '08 and see if he can earn himself a new contract for '09.
Go heavy early.
You do not maintain perfection, you work for it everyday.
