I'm bored, so here is how I see us going with our picks. I'm not considering trades/etc. because I don't feel like looking up the value charts.

1. Philip Merling, DE, Clemson - He seems to be dropping in the first round now that news of a sports hernia injury repairing surgery happened a few weeks ago. He has very long arms, nice size, and good time speed. He is a very good pass rusher and has very good pursuit. He's questionable against the run and probably won't overpower any OT's, but he's an edge rusher. I believe Williams, Otah, Clady, and Cherilus will all be gone by our pick. Not to mention Cherilus projects out to be a better RT than LT.

2. Heath Benedict, OT, Newberry - Benedict is a small school guy who the Jaguars actually worked out last year because they thought he was going to enter the draft. Of course, it turns out he did not. I expect the Jaguars to have just as much interest in him, and he is climbing draft boards. Another possible target could be Sam Baker of USC, but I feel he will be gone by this selection. He could play any position on the line, is very powerful, and very athletic for his size. However, he is very raw and will need some work. He was a top tier recruit who transferred out of Tennessee due to academics.

3. Tyrelle Johnson, FS/SS, Arkansas St. - We know how the Jaguars like the pluck small school players with big upside, and Johnson is just that. He is a tremendous athlete who runs very well (4.45 40) and has the physicality to come up and support the run. He has adequate size to play either S position, as we know the Jaguars need depth there. I think everyone's favorite pick Barret will be gone by this pick, and I don't think he's worth spending a 2nd round pick on.

3. DeMario Pressly, DT, NC State - With the loss of Marcus Stroud, you can expect the Jaguars to bring in a young player to compete at the DT position and battle Jimmy Kennedy. Pressly is coming out of whats been a DL factory in NC State that produced players like Mario Williams, Manny Lawson, John McCargo, and Tank Tyler. Pressly is a distuptive DT who gets into the backfield. He suffered through some nagging injuries in his career, but he has a lot of upside and would fit well into the Jaguars DT rotation.

4. Darrelle Robertson, DE, Georgia Tech - Robertson is an undersized athletic DE who is explosive off the edge. He also offer vesatility in the aspect that he could drop back and is athletic enough to play in coverage, much like what was done with Bobby McCray at times last season. He is a pegged as a 3-4 OLB, however I think he could be a productive off-the-bench DE in a 4-3 scheme.

5. Paul Smith, QB, Tulsa - Even with paying Lemon nearly $3M a season, I expect the Jaguars to make a run at a late round QB. Instead of going the easy route and saying they will draft and IR Dennis Dixon out of Oregon in the 5th round, I chose a QB who the Jaguars have shown interest in who could be a 2-3 year developmental guy. Smith was very productive at Tulsa in a pass firts offense that move to a hurry up in 2007, which he posted his best ever season throwing nearly 50 touchdowns and completing 60% of his passes. He's a bit on the shorter side at just under 6'2", but he has the ability to move around in the pocket.

5. Albert Young, RB, Iowa - This is my official homer pick, as I was a big fan of Albert Young. He suffered through nagging injuries in his junior and senior seasons at Iowa, however when he was healthy he was a monster. He was on the preseason Heisman watch list before the start of the 2006 season after running for 1,300 yards for 5.4 YPC in 12 games in 2005. He is not overly fast, but he run with power, has some elusiveness and is a threat catching the ball out of the back field. He also has kick and punt return experience and ability.

5. Jeremy Geathers, DE/OLB, UNLV - I don't know a ton about Geathers, other than the Jaguars went to his pro-day and worked him out. He's another tweener type guy who's a pass rusher in a 4-3 or a stand up backer in a 3-4. Not to mention I'm just throwing a random spot here because I don't think there is anyway the Jaguars use all of these draft picks.

A couple of questions, and none of them are 'flame-intended' if you get my drift.

1. I feel like Round 2, although we will be picking late, is a little high for Newberry. Do you think he rises due to the dearth of OG talent this year? How long until you think he starts?

2. Do you rank D. Pressley above other guys like Red Bryant and Ahtyba Rubin? If so, why? What role do you see him playing along the D-Line?

3. Why so far down for Robertson? He is probably one of my favorite guys in this draft so I might have him over-rated a tad, but I thought that for sure he would be gone by the end of Round Three.

1. I think there will be a run on offensive lineman, and Newberry's ability to virtually play every position on the offensive line will make him climb on draft day, especially for teams like the Jaguars who like versatility in their offensive lineman.

2. I rank him about the same, however I chose him because he's a better pass rusher than those two, and I feel he'd fit right into how we rotate our defensive lineman.

3. I just don't see him going in round 3. I like him a lot and think he's kind of like another Hawkins type guy, however I see him going in the 4th. Nothing really against him.

Please allow me to interject mine from the other day, that I entered into the vault.  I included a 7th as I believe we will get a comp. pick

1) Calais Campbell, DE         Miami             6’8”  290lbs.   5.03/40 – Bigger than prototype size and good athleticism.  Vanished at times this past season.  Was considered a top 10 pick after his Sophomore season.  I am still convinced that he is far better than his workouts.

2) Dre Moore, DT     Maryland        6’4”   305lbs.  4.88/40 – Rough around the edges DT with elite athleticism.  Built more like a DE than a DT, but has a good base and strength to rival most DT’s in this draft class.  With more polish, he’d be a late First Rounder, IMO.

3a) Heath Benedict, OT/OG     Newberry   6’5”  326lbs.   5.07/40 – Athletic O-Lineman with great size and an ability to play 4 positions across the OL.  If asked to play early, he’d project inside.  With good coaching and improved technique, he could be a very productive OLT.  Shows elite athleticism and was angered after running a “slow” 5.07/40 at the combine and only putting up 27 reps of 225lbs.  He claims to be more of a 4.85/40 guy and 33-35 reps!  One time High School All America admits readily to partying his way out of the Tennessee Volunteer program (I didn’t think that was possible).  He decided to attend Newberry in order to continue to play football without sitting out a season.

3b) Tom Zbikowski, SS     Notre Dame   5’11”   209lbs.  4.55/40 – Experienced Safety with better-than-advertised coverage ability.  Big hitter with good hands and instincts.  Good Punt Returner.  Surprised many with his excellent workouts.  A true strong safety excels in the box, but is solid in coverage.  Production dropped off this season on a bad Notre Dame team.

4) Tommy Blake, DE   TCU   6’3”   272lbs.  4.78/40 – I don’t believe we can pass this guy up when he slides to us here.  A former first round talent, who’s of the field issues really hurt his game and his scale this past season.  Sought medical help for depression and anxiety and has worked very hard in the offseason to return to his prior form.  He’s not there yet, but with a close eye by the coaching staff and an NFL quality conditioning program, he could be a helluva player in the mold of Terrell Suggs.

5a) Kevin O’Connell, QB     San Diego State   6’5”   225lbs.   4.61/40 – It’s looking more and more like QG won’t be on this roster next season.  This guy is a developmental prospect with big upside.  Good arm with good athleticism.  Not what you’d call a polished QB, but has all the physical tools and prototype size.  Definitely on the rise after showing well at the combine.  Clearly shows the athleticism at the position that Shack and Jack covet.  A season with Mike Shula will make O’Connell a very solid QB…sooner rather than later.

5b) Ben Moffitt, LB   South Florida   6’1”   234lbs.   4.58/40 – Very productive LB’er with the ability to play ILB or OLB.  Showed very well at his Pro Day after not running a 40 at the combine due to injury.  Ran a low time of 4.55/40 at his Pro Day with a 37.5” vertical.  Has the production and athleticism to be considered earlier, but the lack of need for us at LB will allow us to wait until the middle of the 5th to grab him.

5c) Cory Boyd. RB  South Carolina  6’0”   213lbs.   4.51/40 – Strong, productive running back with good hands out of the backfield.  Has the ability to run over safeties and the speed to beat linebackers to the edge.  The real question mark was his speed, but he answered that with a solid 4.51 at the combine.

6) To Minnesota

7) Zackary Bowman, CB/FS   Nebraska   6’0”   197lbs.   4.39/40 – Significant injury risk pushes this kid straight to the bottom of the draft.  However, two knee surgeries later and the kid still runs a 4.4/40.  Excellent size/speed ratio and decent hands.  More of a zone than a man-to-man corner as he plays best with the ball in front of him.  Struggles with smaller, shiftier receivers in space and may project best as a backup FS where he can use his speed to keep everything in front of him.  With a roster like ours, any 7th rounder would have a hard time sticking on our roster.  You might as well take one with first day talent knowing that you can keep him around at least one year by putting him on IR.

I thought Benedict looked a little overmatched at the Senior Bowl.  But thats just my opinion.

so lets say Trevor Laws or Dre Moore is also available in the 2nd, do you still take Benedict?

How would you feel about one of those two DTs in the 2nd and a guy like Rinehart in the 3rd?

Just fine, however I think both Laws and Moore are gone by our 2nd round pick.

Tyrell Johnson is one of my favorite players in the class, he is my #2 safety, #1 SS.

I am up in the air with Benedict. He is a good player, but in like...round 3. I think he is a RG/RT type.

I could see it, I'll put it like that.

Like I said, I think they want an OL in the first 2 rounds, and I think Baker will be gone.

I like those first three picks. That would be a pretty nice looking crop of rookies. I'm not sure I would get excited about another DE /OLB tweener, Brent Hawkins clone in the 4th round. I just don't think there is room for another one on this team. As far as the safety position goes, how would Jamar Adams be for the SS pick?

It has been at least a couple of days, so I guess I will jump in with my latest mock draft.

Rd 1(26): Gosder Cherilus - OLT - Boston College 6'7" 314 lbs 5.14/40

Jags surprise everyone and take an OT that most feel is best suited to play the ORT position but whom the Jags intend to place at the OLT position. The Jags want to emphasize the running game specifically to the left side of the line. Cherilus is a dominant run blocker who only lacks the confidence and the experience to become a dominant OLT. Since the Jags passing game will mostly come off the play-action pass, this ploy should help Cherilus dealing with speed rushers. Look for more draws directed towards the left side of the Oline.

BTW, this guy has 35 5/8" long arms and 11 1/2" hands. These measurements are by far the biggest of all the lineman in this draft.

Rd 2(58): Red Bryant - DT - Texas A&M 6'4" 318 lbs 5.00/40

Jags take a space eater DT that will rotate with Henderson and McDaniel on 1st and 2nd downs, allowing Meier and Landri to be the 3rd down penetrating DTs.

TRADE: After the first day of the draft the Jags make a deal with the Cowboys to trade Matt Jones straight up for Marcus Spears - DE. The Jags rid themselves of a clearly talented player who is less than motivated and pick up a LDE to backup Paul Spicer.

Rd 3(71): Brad Cottam - TE - Tennessee - 6'8" 270 lbs 4.63/40

Mike Tice is going to fall in love with this guy because of his size and speed. The Jags intend to use him in 2 TE sets and place in on the left side of the line to help in pass protection and again to emphasize running to the left side of the line.

Rd 3(89): Darrell Robertson - DE - Ga. Tech - 6'4" 255 lbs 4.76/40

Jags take a speed edge rusher that will need some time to fill out his frame and learn to handle the big OLT's in the game. He reminds me of a young Tony Brackens type player and his ability to drop back in coverage will be used in connection with how the Jags intend to use Brian Smith. On obvious 3rd and long plays, Brian Smith will line up at the WLB spot behind Robertson, such that one or both will rush the passer or one will drop back in coverage.

TRADE: In this scenario, I have the Jags trading Mike Peterson to the Lions for Pick 107 in Rd 4.

Rd 4(107): Dexter Jackson - PR/WR - App. St. 5'10" 182 lbs 4.33/40

Jags take a slot WR that will become their main punt returner. This will allow the Jags to trade Dennis Northcutt during training camp for a 2009 Rd 5 draft pick as the Jags stockpile picks for the 2009 draft. Jackson's speed is best utilized in the slot as the checkdown WR who will draw the nickle CB. His ability to move laterally is the
