I can't thank you all enough for the support you're showing me.

Unfortunately the surgery was canceled at the last second. I got there at 11am (PST), but I didn't learn until about 2pm (as in 5pm EST) that it wouldn't happen. The surgeon came in and said he was canceling it because my EKG showed some suspicious readings, and they want to follow up on that before risking the anesthesia. The plan is for me to get another EKG next week, and if things check out ok they'll reschedule the surgery to happen as soon as possible. I'm tentatively targeting April 23rd.

That said, it was still a long day for me which is why I'm only now getting around to posting this. Much of the day was spent in their "nuclear science" room in this imaging machine. They shot radioactive dye into my back near the scar from the initial surgery, and a couple hours later they put me in the machine to basically take pictures of where the dye spread to. It looks like it went to a central node near one of my arm pits, so the surgeon will probably take out that particular node to be tested.

So does anybody know anything about EKGs?

I know it checks for heart attacks...best of luck to you 02!

My wife had a suspicious EKG reading that kept her in the hospital for 3 days.  Turned out to be nothing.  I hope that's the case with you too.  Sorry to here about your having to go through all that prep, only to reschedule.

I'm hoping it's not a new big thing I have to worry about, but I've never had reason to suspect heart problems before. For instance, I've always had near perfect blood pressure.

Jags02, an EKG is an acronym for Electrokardiogram.  Breaking the word down into medical terms, "electro" means electrical, "kardio" means heart, and "gram" means record.  It's an electrical record of the heart.

Last autumn, I had an EEG (electroencephalogram) after my sleep episode (I think I told people here about it).  An EEG is the same thing, except it's with the brain.  With me, they put sticky white things on my head that monitered the electrical activity of my brain (those were attatched to wires, which were attached to a machine).  I was required to stay up all night before the EEG and I couldn't eat or drink anything beforehand, either.

To my knowledge (I've never had an EKG), what they will do with an EKG is the same thing (except it's with the heart).  They'll probably put the electrodes (to my knowledge, those are what the "sticky white things" are called) on your chest, which will monitor and record various aspects of your heart.  The results will be given to a doctor, where you will see what it showed a couple of days later.  My guess is that they will probably have you do something preliminary, like what I did with not getting any sleep.

There are multiple kinds of EEG's.  Some have people sleeping at night in a bed with the electrodes on their head.  I didn't have that, but what I did was sit lay in a chair and relax.  I wasn't in there for over an hour.

My guess is that there are multiple methods of EKG's, too.

The EKG was actually real quick. The EKG nurse walked up and introduced herself as she stuck the sticky things to various spots. I'm thinking there were two on my chest...maybe more...one on each arm, and a couple more. I'm thinking there were 8 total. She then attached an electical clip to each one with wires going to the machine, and then pushed a button. Immediately a chart printed out of the machine with the results, and that's what they went by. The whole process probably took three minutes.

02, ICF pretty much nailed it with the EKG. It is a basic test to check the electrical readings of the heart. It is actually very simple, yet very complex to interpret. That's why Cardiologists make the big bucks. I don't know if anyone else heard this, but Quentin Groves has a heart condition that was found on an EKG recently. It's not a major deal, but may require a procedure to straighten it out. It is one of the best ways to see how the heart is functioning on a certain level. Blood pressure is more about the physical aspects of the heart and associated plumbing, which is why having good blood pressure didn't mean much with this test. This monitors the signals which trigger the heart's specific functions, and how the heart is reacting to those signals. If that makes it any clearer.

In any case, you know we're all pulling for you, 02.

I had a second EKG a few days ago that revealed the same irregularity. If you're looking at the graph, on the loop below the main line there's a wiggle in it that they're unsure about. On Tuesday afternoon I'll be at another clinic where they'll shoot another radioactive isotope in me in order to scan my heart area. They're calling it a "nuclear stress test." After I get the results from that I should be able to re-schedule the surgery.
