With all the transactions I still need to account for in my prior reply, I need to add a few more roster moves from this past Tuesday...
  • Donovin Darius placed on IR
  • Charles Sharon activated from Practice Squad (finally, a sure-handed receiver on the roster)
  • Wayne Hunter re-signed to Practice Squad
  • David Richardson re-signed to Practice Squad

Looking over the roster moves from the past two weeks, everything is accounted for. RB Rich Alexis replaced OL Wayne Hunter who was activated during Khalif's one game suspension. DT Walter Curry replaced DE James Wyche. Then S David Richardson is replaced by S Jamaal Fudge. And now Hunter, having cleared waivers, is back on the squad replacing WR Charles Sharon.

With all the moves, I thought I'd just list the current Practice Squad as a quick reference...

  • RB Rich Alexis
  • LB Kevis Coley
  • DT Walter Curry
  • TE Greg Estandia
  • OT Ryan Gibbons
  • OL Wayne Hunter
  • WR Chad Owens
  • DB David Richardson

It's time for me to account for all of the above moves...

  • Alexis ended up being activated from the Practice Squad, and then re-leased and re-signed so quickly that I believe he never missed a week of Practice Squad pay while managing to also take home a one-week paycheck worth $20,588 ($350,000 base).
  • Hunter ended up with one week on the Practice Squad being replaced by one week on the active roster. That meant a paycheck of $29,412 ($500,000 base) instead of $4,700.
  • Stanley was waived after week 10. He was initially signed after week 1 meaning he ended up with a total of nine weeks at the rookie minimum. That works out to a $145,588 dead money hit.
  • Wyche was activated after week 10 and signed to a 2-year deal. His 10 weeks on the squad works out to $47,000, and his remaining 7 weeks on the roster works out to $113,235. Adding these together along with his $14,500 dead money from when he was initially waived (he'll also count $43,500 in dead money and $360,000 in salary next year), his total cap hit works out $174,735.
  • Fudge was also activated after week 10 and also signed for 2 years, so his numbers work out the same except he only has something like $2,500 in dead money each year to account for.
  • Curry was signed to the Practice Squad for the final 7 weeks which works out to a $32,900 cap hit.
  • Darius was placed on IR where his cap hit will remain the same at $3,125,000.
  • Sharon was activated from the Practice Squad after week 11, so that works out to $51,700 for the first eleven weeks, and then $97,059 for the last six. His details aren't yet up, but like Fudge he should have signed on for two years with something like $2,500 in dead money counting each year.
  • Richardson was re-signed to the Practice Squad for the final six weeks which works out to $28,200. He was previously on the squad for four weeks, so altogether his cap hit is $47,000.

Having plugged all these moves into my spreadsheet, I'm now estimating the Jaguars at $5.69 mil under the cap.

Now they are pushing the bubble a bit, better watch it or they will be back over the cap before we know it.

Now they are pushing the bubble a bit, better watch it or they will be back over the cap before we know it.

You lost me here J&D. The Jaguars are more than $5 mil under the cap with the season nearly over. How is that pushing the bubble? The biggest concern regarding the cap right now is figuing out how to properly use up their remaining cap money in such a way that it transfers over to next year.

As far as future caps, it's getting easier and easier for teams to stay under. This season the cap was $102 mil, and if my memory serves me correctly the cap will be $109 mil next year, and then $116 mil the year after that. The 2008 amount was recently announced as having been determined.

At any rate, I need to update everything to reflect Leftwich going on IR with David Richardson activated from the Practice Squad to replace him on the roster. Of course Byron's $6.3 mil cap hit remains the same, but Richardson is now set to earn $125,000 for the remainder of the season.

I've delayed this update until I could figure out who replaced Richardson on the practice squad. However, I'm still trying to do that. With Richardson now an active player, the seven players leftover on the squad were RB Rich Alexis, LB Kevis Coley, DT Walter Curry, TE Greg Estandia, OT Ryan Gibbons, and WR Chad Owens. However, the official roster at this site lists all of these guys along with QB Ben Dougherty and S Jamar Landrom as being on the squad. But that's nine players and the squad can only have eight, so somebody else must have been waived.

Given the lack of local media coverage regarding recent roster moves I'll have to dig deeper to figure this out. Thankfully, PFW continues to do an excellent job of keeping track of roster moves. So here's what happened...

Landrom replaced Richardson initially. Then more recently Wayne Hunter was removed from the squad with a knee injury. I see him listed as "Practice Squad injured," which I guess is an IR for players on the squad with him continuing to earn the same $4,700 a week. I never heard of this before, but the QB from Florida A&M has since replaced Hunter on the squad.

Having accounted for these moves on my spreadsheet (it'll be updated online soon) I now show the Jaguars at $5.55 mil under.

There are a couple roster moves this week to account for. QB Ben Dougherty was released from the Practice Squad after one week, and was replaced by OL Pete McMahon. More recently, Sorensen was placed on IR with rookie DE Jeremy Mincey signed off of the 49ers Practice Squad to replace him. I'm guessing that Mincey was signed to a 2-year deal with him also earning the rookie minimum next year since three games is not enough for this season to be accrued as a year experience. The net effect on the cap is about $50,000, or three game checks for Mincey. I'm now showing the Jaguars at $5.5 mil under.

Jags02,

What type of extention did we give Paul Spicer?

Jags02,

What type of extention did we give Paul Spicer?

His extension is a complete mystery. He was under contract for this year and the next already, but they opted to add a third year this past offseason. However, no details have ever been reported anywhere. I'm simply guessing that they gave him a $2.5 mil signing bonus with this extension, but really I have no clue. Also, his last contract was full of incentives so I imagine that incentives were again used in this extension.

I need to make a slight correction. In a reply above I mentioned...

I'm guessing that Mincey was signed to a 2-year deal with him also earning the rookie minimum next year since three games is not enough for this season to be accrued as a year experience.

Indeed Mincey was signed for two years, but next year he's in there at the minimum rate for a player with one accrued season ($360,000) as opposed to the rookie minimum ($280,000).

Also it's worth noting that the Rams signed Alexis off of the Practice Squad. I think he still gets paid as a squad member for this week ($4,700) since the signing came so late in the week. Expect the team to announce his Practice Squad replacement early next week.

I may not know much about Salary caps slike you do but from what i was under the impression from reading what you put up, it sounded as if we were spending more again like we did when TC was here, that is why I said what I said about pushing the bubble cause it would pop anyhow carry on. And thanks for the update in letting me know that the Jags are a bit more than 5 1/2 mil. under the cap.
