Great find. I don't recall it being reported that Wrighster inked a new deal, but this suggests he must have recently signed a rather large extension. With so much money still left over, and with November and its deadlines just around the corner, it won't surprise me if more players sign extensions. Guys I'm looking at for possible extensions include Byron Leftwich and Deon Grant. I'll update everything soon. Along with Wrighster's new contract, I also have to account for Peterson going on IR with Carroll taking his place on the roster. I'm thinking the Jaguars must have given Ahmad something in the way of bonus money on his one-year deal to have squarely beaten out all the other teams talking to him. I believe the limit is $40,000 to qualify for a "Beneficial Salary Program" contract wherein other teams may have been offering him that much, so I'll guess the Jaguars gave him a $50,000 roster bonus on top of his $425,000 base salary.

| | I'm getting no extra inside info as of late so I'll just have to guess the details for Wrighster's extension. Applying logic considering Vance's tendencies when it comes to contracts, I'm estimating that Wrighster signed a 5-year extension worth $10 mil. His base salary this year is now $2,315,350, but when you subract his prior salary of $721,600 that leaves $1,593,750 in new money. As a machinist I recognize the number .59375 as the fraction 19/32, so I figure he probably got the other 13/32, or $406,250, as a roster bonus. Adding this to his base salary gives me an estimate of $2,721,600 for his cap hit this year. Adding his remaining base salaries to this number and then subtracting the result from $10 mil leaves $2,275,000. My guess is that he'll get this as an option bonus next year which will result in adding $455,000 to his base salaries after this year. After adding on the extra $2 mil to his cap hit this year along with Ahmad Carroll's $475,000 estimate, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $5.58 mil under the cap. My spreadsheet and everything else should be updated soon.

| | In my reply above where I discussed the five-year extension that the team gave George Wrighster about a month ago, I estimated that in addition to his new salaries that he probably has bonus money brininging the total deal to $10 mil. However, it's since been reported that the total extension was for $7.5 mil, and that his additional $1,593,750 in base salary was given to him in lieu of bonus money. When I add his additional salary this year to his future salaries, I still need another $181,250 to get to a $7.5 mil total. So I'm guessing that he's getting this much as a roster bonus next year. It's either that or something in the neighborhood of $180,000 is being paid to him in some other form such as yearly workout bonuses or incentives. At any rate, his cap hit this year equals his new total salary of $2,315,350. I was previously including a little bonus money in his cap hit, but after removing that bonus money my new overall estimate for the Jaguars is $5.98 mil. Of course you might as well just say $6 mil since I can easily be off a good $500,000 for more.

| | One quick roster move to cover is the release of Chad Owens and the activation of Rich Alexis to replace him on the roster. I don't know who is replacing Alexis on the Practice Squad, so post the name if you know it. I'm having to make a couple assumptions that I can correct if need be. That is, I'm assuming this move was made no later than Tuesday or else Owens would have paid an additional game check. I'm also assuming that Alexis' Practice Squad replacement has already been signed even though they haven't reported as much as of yet. If I'm correct with these assumptions, Owens total dead money is now $181,411, which works out to a $145,559 savings (nine rookie game checks). Rich Alexis, with one year officially accrued on his resume, commands a minimum yearly salary of $350,000, which over the remaining nine weeks works out to a total of $185,294. Over the first eight weeks Alexis took home $37,600 before taxes as a member of the Practice Squad. Assuming that somebody is already in place on the Practice Squad (if not, the team saved a $4,700 weekly Practice Squad check), the net difference for these roster moves is right about $40,000. This brings my new estimate for the Jaguars to $5.94 mil under the cap.

| | A few minor updates need to be made. For starters, it now appears that Owens was released on Thursday instead of Tuesday, which in turn means I have to make slight changes regarding both Chad and Rich Alexis. Teams generally want to make roster moves no later than Tuesday to avoid having to pay players an extra game check. In my reply above I assumed that the Jaguars must have cut Owens on Tuesday, but I read somewhere that Chad was added to the Practice Squad "four days after he was released." I believe they added him on Monday. It might have been Tuesday, but in either event that means he was on the roster last Wednesday. So Owens got an additional rookie game check for the Titans game meaning I have to add $16,176 to his dead money figure bringing that amount to $197,588. I'm also now listing him on the Practice Squad with him set to make an additional $37,600. Meanwhile, I believe this also means that Alexis got paid for the week both as a Practice Squad player and as an active player. So I'm adding $4,700 to his Practice Squad total. More recently, and again I'm assuming these moves actually happened this past Tuesday, the Jaguars placed Brent Hawkins on IR while activating Kenneth Pettway and replacing him on the squad with Kevis Coley. As a fifth round pick it's tough to know if Brent had a split salary clause in his contract which would lower his base salary for the remainder of the year. I'll assume he doesn't have this clause in his contract meaning his cap hit remains unchanged. Kenneth Pettway earned $14,100 for being on the Practice Squad for the past three weeks, and now is set to earn an additional $129,412 (he was only active for four games with the Texans in '05, so I think he's still at the rookie rate) for being on the roster for the last eight games. Coley is set to earn $37,600 as a Practice Squad memeber for the remainder of the season. After plugging all these moves into my spreadsheet, my overall estimate for the Jaguars now stands at $5.8 mil under the cap.

| | I have to make a minor correction to my prior reply. I guessed that Pettway was making the rookie minimum this year because he was only active in four games last year. But actually, you only need to be active for four games for a season to be accrued. So he does have one accrued season, which in turn means that his minimum salary is $350,000 instead of $275,000. Since they're only paying him for the last eight weeks on the season (in addition to the 14,100 he's been paid for being on the Practice Squad), this means he's getting $164,706 instead of $129,412. Subtracting roughly $35,000 from the amount available under the cap brings my new overall estimate to $5.76 mil availble.

| One thing I've been trying to figure out is Byron's cap hit for next year. I had him down as only making the minimum veteran salary for next year ($595,000). The NFLPA actually has him at $545,000, but they've yet to update old entries with the new minimum salaries spelled out in the new CBA. Now Vic has said a few times that Byron's salary next year will be "$5.2 mil," so this is how I think his cap hit works out for the 2007 season...- $595,000 - original salary including minimum salary increase
- $4,600,000 - base salary escalator achieved for having reached playing-time markers in first three years
- $50,000 - workout bonus (he would have had additional $500,000 "playing-time bonus," but it appears he'll fail to reach that bonus this season)
- $1,777,667 - signing bonus hit
- $7,022,667 - total cap hit for '07
Also keep in mind the total amortization left on his contract. You see, the original contract is actually through 2009 for cap reasons, so there are still three years of signing bonus hits remaining. It's just that the last two years are voidable which means he'll become an unrestricted free agent after '07 if not re-signed. Byron's total amortization after this season will be $5,333,333. If he plays out his contract through '07, then I'm pretty sure the remaining $3,555,667 in amortization will end up as dead money on the '08 cap. Should Byron's contract be extended, it's tough to say if his cap hits will continue being paid on schedule through '09, or if the remaining amount would forward to this year. It may even depend on how Vance wants to pay off the amortization. Should anything else happen that money would instead forward immediately to the '07 cap. For instance, if Byron were to be traded for a first round pick, instead of counting $7.02 mil he'd count $5,333,333 in dead money. So you see, the team really only saves about $1.7 mil on Byron next year if they were trade him.
