| | According to www.nflpa.org site, which now has the Practice Squad players listed, the weekly salary for the squad is the same as last year at $4,700. Frankly, this surprises me. Under the former CBA, the squad salary went up $350 each year. I guessed that they'd at least do the same this year since all the salaries were going up under the new CBA extension. My estimate was $5,150 per week, but I guess the players voted (possible concession to owners) to not even give squad members their normal yearly increase. At any rate, changing their weekly amount from my estimate to last year's rate results in a new overall estimate of $8.83 mil under. I'll have to revise my estimate to this amount. Also, I see that Brian Iwuh is indeed the 8th Practice Squad member. I don't know if this is new or old info, but I just noticed it for the first time.

| | So whats up with the Quinn Gray stuff from last year... I believe we gave him some unlikely to be earned incentives or something to carry money from last year to this year... can you explain? Also, being 13 mil under the cap - sounds like we have some serious room to play with...is that a fair statement?

| Did I neglect to mention that the salary cap info is updated on the website? It looks different this time because I don't have MS Word or Excel any more. I did it using Open Office.

So whats up with the Quinn Gray stuff from last year... I believe we gave him some unlikely to be earned incentives or something to carry money from last year to this year... can you explain? Also, being 13 mil under the cap - sounds like we have some serious room to play with...is that a fair statement? The Jaguars gave Quinn Gray a new deal in each of the past two years as a clever maneuvre to carry excess money over to the following year. They included "Likely To Be Earned" incentives in the new contract that they knew he'd never earn. All "LTBEs" count in the immediate year in full, and then are credited onto the following years cap if not met. I'm estimating that Gray's resulted in $2.8 mil credited onto the Jaguars salary cap for this move, and I'm estimating the total credit for this and similar moves at $3 mil even. What this means, if my estimates are correct, is that while the league's base salary cap is $102 mil, the Jaguars "adjusted salary cap" is $105 mil. The spreadsheet dav just updated shows where I had the Jaguars on opening day. It depicts the Jaguars having to account for $96.17 mil resulting in them being $8.83 mil under. Accounting for moves since them, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $8.3 mil under the cap. I'll go into more detail in my next reply. We also certainly have plenty of money to play with. If a prime player they want becomes available, the Jaguars can easily move on him.

| | I ran across some interesting info that I don't think has been reported. It turns out, from what I can tell, that Jim Davis is on the Jaguars injured reserve. This is news to me, and is starting to make this year look like a couple years ago when he had so many DEs on IR. This past week the Jaguars placed Reggie Hayward on IR. His entire cap hit counts in full. Montavious Stanley replaced him on the roster which added a $275,000 rookie minimum salary. They have to keep him on the roster for at least three weeks. Overall I'm estimating the total for their nine players on injured reserve (for cap purposes it's the same, but actually it's 7 on IR, and 2 more on the "Waived-Injured list) at $8,875,333. I figure that most likely at least on player is on injured reserve, so I selected an very likely candidate with an average $350,000 salary in Daniel Connolly, and have tagged his salary as counting only $195,000. That's the split salary rate for someone currently making $350,000 if placed on IR. As for the Practice Squad, my next updated spreadsheet will look like this... | Practice Squad | | | | | | Rich Alexis | RB | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Greg Estandia | TE | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Jamaal Fudge | S | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Wayne Hunter | OL | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Brian Iwuh | LB | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Charles Sharon | WR | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | James Wyche* | DE | $ 79,900 | $ 79,900 | | | Ryan Gibbons | OT | $ 79,900 | $ 75,200 | | | Brett Romberg | C | $ 79,900 | $ 4,700 | | | | Total: | 10)"> $ 639,200 | |
Note how I list precisely who counts for how many weeks. The NFLPA is showing last year's Practice Squad rate of $4,700 per week as having remained the same. Over the past several years it's gone up $350 each year, so it's possible they still haven't updated the new figure and that we'll discover the actual rate is $5,150 or even more. But for now I have to stick with $4,700.
