| | There are finally some numbers up of the new deals, so it's time for me to update all of the initial moves of free agency. Again I'm having to guess at their contract struture, but I do plan to seek out someone with a media pass so I can eventually discover the precise details. I'll just have to list them... - Troy Williamson acquired for conditional 6th round pick. The Jaguars won't owe the pick if he fails to make the opening day roster. Troy is now in the books with a $910,000 base salary this year and a $1,435,000 base salary next year. There's no additional bonus money in the deal, so these numbers equal his cap hits.
- Cleo Lemon signed a 3-year, $8.1 mil contract that included a $2.95 mil signing bonus and an additional $4 mil in possible incentives. His base salaries break down as $605,000, $1,495,000 and $2,400,000. Adding up his base salaries and signing bonus leaves me $650,000 short of his $8.1 mil total. I'm thinking he probably has a $50,000 workout bonus in each year of the deal plus a $500,000 roster bonus due something like the day after the last round of cuts. We may ultimately learn that it's due next year, but for now I'll show it as counting this year giving him a cap hit of $2,138,333.
- Jerry Porter signed a 6-year, $30 mil contract with $10 mil guaranteed. His base salaries break down as $900,000, $1.9 mil, $3.5 mil and then $5 mil in each of his last three seasons. If you tack on $10 mil to these base salaries, you're at $31.3 mil which surpasses his reported contract total. It's possible that's the case, but I'm guessing Vance did something a little different which he's done before. That is, I'm guessing Vance gave him a $9.1 mil signing bonus plus guaranteed his first year salary. I thought they did something like that ever since the deal was reported as "$10 mil guaranteed" as opposed to saying it was a $10 mil signing bonus. This gives him a contract total of $30.3 mil, but that's close enough for them to just say $30 mil. If correct he'd have a $2,416,667 cap hit this season.
- Marcus Stroud was traded for 3rd and 5th round picks. The Bills take over his $5 mil salary and his $100,000 workout bonus while the Jaguars have to account for his $2.6 mil remaining amortization as dead money in their books.
- Drayton Florence signed a 6-year, $36 mil deal with a $12 mil guaranteed. His base salaries break down as $1 mil, $1.5 mil, $4.9 mil, and then $5.9 mil in each of his last three seasons. Interestingly, when you add up his base salaries to his guaranteed figure you get $37.1 mil, which again overshoots the reported total. I'm thinking his contract is structured the same way as Porter's. That is, his first year $1 mil salary is guaranteed on top of an $11 mil signing bonus. This puts his contract total at $36.1 mil, and leaves him with a cap hit of $2,833,333 this year.
- Chris Naeole was released freeing up his $2.1 mil base salary. Overall, his $2,910,953 mil cap hit became a $1,407,620 dead money hit. The Jaguars dead money total is now up to $6.9 mil.
- Jimmy Kennedy signed a one-year deal for the minimum $605,000 base salary plus a $50,000 bonus. Some reports mistakenly quoted his cap hit at $705,000 or more, but it's only $655,000.
I think that's everything. Again, I'm guessing at their contract struture. It's possible that roster bonuses were used in some cases instead of signing bonuses which would use up more cap room this year, but I've been guessing more along the lines of standard contracts which spread the cap hits out. Per the above estimates they haven't really speant much cap room at all. Part of what was speant was offset by trading Stroud and releasing Naeole, and now every time a player joins the 51 most expensive list he knocks off a player counting $445,000. With the above moves factored in as estimated, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $31.16 mil under. Summing up their moves (as I double check this number), I had the Jaguars at $32.73 mil under a $128.65 mil adjusted cap. Per my estimates, adding Williamson, Lemon, Porter, Florence and Kennedy added $8,953,333 to the cap, but their additions knocked off $2,075,000 in base salaries from the 51-most expensive list. That's a net addition of $6,878,333. From this the losses of Stroud and Naoele saved $5,303,333. That's an overall net difference of $1,575,000. Indeed, the numbers work out.

| | You know the thing that amazes me? The team spent ~$25 million in guaranteed money in 2 days and had a Cap impact of around 1.5 million. My God, they could do this again next season. We are truly out of Salary Cap hell.

| | I'm trying to follow but I'm horrible with numbers so maybe Jags02 you can help me out here. We spent 25 million in guaranteed money recently, and it isn't affecting this years cap much at all. Bottom line, are these deals good for the team long-term? Or should we assume its possible that Florence and Porter won't be around for those last 3 years of their deals where they are scheduled to make the most amount of money. I also think its a safe bet to say that a lot of this cap space now is going to be used to extend Garrard. Thanks for your help and this thread Jags. It's very informative. If I only didn't hate numbers. Being a history major is coming back to bite me bigtime huh!

| The cap impact may be greater than $1.575 mil if they spent roster bonus instead of signing bonus on some of these deals. I presumed straight signing for the most part, but I'm hoping to get an answer as to who might have received roster bonuses. I suspect some of it was roster. I am guessing a $500,000 roster bonus for Lemon, but that's the only roster bonus I've listed.

They need to get closer tto the cap and Vance likes smooth yeazr to year changes in cap hits for players. I thought he would try to get some of these contracts close to flat. I don't want to see them push a lot of bonus out into future years. It is a good thing to be able to cut later on with less dead money to worry about. |

I may have to revise my estimates to include more roster bonus if I don't get concrete answers soon. At this rate if it were all signing, they'd probably never reach the $100 mil minimum.

| | Two roster moves need accounting for. The Jaguars re-signed Mo Williams and released Charles Sharon. I believe Sharon signed without a bonus meaning his release will not leave any dead money on the cap. Mo signed a 4-year contract with 4 mil guaranteed. Incredibly, Mo's base salary figures are already up at the nflpa site. They work out as follows... - 2008 - $1 mil
- 2009 - $2.5 mil
- 2010 - $3 mil
- 2011 - $3 mil
His contract total has been reported at $12 mil and at $16 mil, so I don't know just yet which figure is correct, but when I add $4 mil to his base salaries, I get $13.5 mil. Again I'm not sure if they're simply guaranteeing his first year salary, but I now have reason to believe they're not doing that. That is, Vic said that Drayton is getting $13 mil this year, and I take it he's talking about his $12 mil in bonus money plus his $1 mil salary. As soon as I have anything to go on I plan to revise my estimates for both Florence and Porter. The rest of the signings should be fairly accurate. For Mo I'm going to guess that he got a $1 mil roster bonus plus a $3 mil signing bonus. That gives him a cap hit this year of $2.75 mil. Plugging Mo into my spreadsheet I'm now showing the Jaguars at $28.84 mil under, but again this will go down quite a bit after I revise those two contract estimates.

| | I've been talking about it. Now it's time for me to do it. That is, I'm going to revise my estimates for Porter and Florence to include more roster bonus in liue of signing bonus. I'm also nixing the idea that their guaranteed total might include guaranteeing some of their salary. That's what they did with Stroud's last contract, and I felt they might have merely because their contracts totals appears to be one to two mil above their reported contract totals. In revising their estimates, I figure that each player received 25 percent of their guaranteed money in the form of roster bonus (matches what I did for Mo's extension). It's hard to know what percentage they might use, but two contracts we seem to know about are Lemon who it appears got a $2.95 mil signing bonus along with a $650,000 roster bonus, and Greg Jones who got a $2.5 mil signing bonus along with a $1.5 mil roster bonus. 25 percent falls in the middle. I'll look at each player individually beginning with the known details... #80 WR Jerry Porter - Six-year contract total reported at $30 mil with $10 mil guaranteed. His official base salaries are: - 2008: $900,000
- 2009: $1,900,000
- 2010: $3,500,000
- 2011: $5,000,000
- 2012: $5,000,000
- 2013: $5,000,000
- TOT: $21,300,000
Adding on $10 mil in guaranteed money gives him contract total of $31.3 mil which has me thinking there's no additional hidden money to account for. After careful thought, I'm now estimating that Porter received a $2.5 mil roster bonus that counts in full this year along with a $7.5 mil signing bonus that counts $1.25 mil each year. This assumption leaves Porter with the following cap hits... - 2008: $4,650,000
- 2009: $3,150,000
- 2010: $4,750,000
- 2011: $6,250,000
- 2012: $6,250,000
- 2013: $6,250,000
#21 CB Drayton Florence - Six-year contract total reported at $36 mil with $12 mil guaranteed. His official base salaries are: - 2008: $1,000,000
- 2009: $1,500,000
- 2010: $4,900,000
- 2011: $5,900,000
- 2012: $5,900,000
- 2013: $5,900,000
- TOT: $25,100,000
Adding on $12 mil in guaranteed money gives him contract total of $37.1 mil which again means there's probably no additional hidden money. I'm now estimating that Florence received a $3 mil roster bonus that counts in full this year along with a $9 mil signing bonus that counts $1.5 mil each year. This assumption leaves Florence with the following cap hits... - 2008: $5,500,000
- 2009: $3,000,000
- 2010: $6,400,000
- 2011: $7,400,000
- 2012: $7,400,000
- 2013: $7,400,000
I still expect to have their actual details shortly, but until then these estimates should put me in the ballpark of where they're at. Keep an eye out for any sites with updated quotes as to where each team is currently under the cap. Having a solid overall quote will help me even more to nail how they're structuring contracts. Having increased Porter's estimated cap hit from $2.42 mil to $4.65 mil, and having increased Florence's from $2.83 mil to $5.5 mil, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $23.93 mil under the cap.

| | I just noticed that LS Brett Goode recently re-signed for the year at the $295,000 minimum salary rate for rookies and first-year players. His signing was reported along with that of Jimmy Kennedy, Pete McMahon and Ryan Gibbons, but McMahon and Gibbons actually signed several weeks ago. I'm estimating no bonus money for Goode, but they might have given him something small like $1000. |
