Found this online ...

Restricted free agents slapped with the first- and third-round tender this offseason get $2.562 million in 2008.

The Jaguars do have to consider what tender to give Sensabaugh as an RFA coming off IR, but I don't think they'll go this high.

CBS just showed the top 5 teams with Cap space.

Titans = 36.6 M

Jags = 32.3 M

49ers = 30.3 M

Bengals = 30.2 M

Cards = 28.1 M

If we play our cards right we can use the money to get a few more key pieces and fight for a chance at a SB. The Tacks could be right on our heels. The AFC South will continue to be the best division in the NFL.

It's nearing the time for me to put together the Jaguars 2009 raw data in order to make a spreadsheet for next year, but I'm not quite there yet. There was one final roster move made this season along with Vic's acknowledging that a move was made to carry money over to next year's cap.

Prior to their final Playoff Game, Chad Owens was released with Charles Sharon activated from the Practice Squad as his replacement. I don't believe there's any money transactions involved for this year since the league pays for the players paychecks in the Postseason. Sharon is set to make a $370,000 base salary in 2008, and then he'll be a Jaguars EFA should he finish the season on the Jaguars roster.

There was also this recent Ask Vic Q & A...

Tom from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL: What advantage was it to Shantee Orr to sign a contract allowing the Jags to move $11 million into next year's cap.
Vic: When you’re nice, people are nice to you.

I'm guessing that Vic said this on the radio or somewhere, but does anyone know precisely where this came from? I assume this was another type of incentives deal where the $11 mil counted immediately as a Likely To Be Earned Incentive, and then with the incentive not met the league will add this amount to the Jaguars adjusted salary cap limit for 2008.

My big question here is, why only $11 mil. The Jaguars were something like $16 mil under, so I thought they'd move an amount closer to this figure. So if this is accurate and they only moved $11 mil, what about the other $5 mil.

As it stands I'm now showing the Jaguars at $5.06 mil under the 2007 cap, and I'm just not seeing how this money might have been spent since the last announcement that the team was around $16 mil under.

As any rate, looking ahead to next year it appears from the quote above this reply that the Jaguars are looking at being $32.3 mil under the 2008 cap prior to making any roster moves for the season. They since signed five of the eight players that finished the season on their Practice Squad.

  • OT Andrew Carnahan
  • CB Rashad Moulton
  • QB Lester Ricard
  • RB D.D. Terry
  • WR D'Juan Woods

All five "first-year players" signed on for one season at the $295,000 rookie minimum. Carnahan replaced Ryan Gibbons as the OT on the Practice Squad going into week 3 while D'Juan Woods was signed just prior to the final Regular Season game when Chad Owens was activated. The other three (Moulton, Ricard and Terry) spent the entire season on the squad.

Looking at other players who were on the Practice Squad...

DT Walter Curry and their International Practice Squad Player, OT Samuel Gutekunst, were the only two players to spend the entire season on the squad without being resigned for 2008. TE Charles Davis was signed to the squad going into week 13 but also was not signed to the 2008 roster. Mincey and Smolko were activated to the roster mid-season, and both players are now set to be EFAs for 2008.

Subtracting $295,000 for each of these five additions, that $32.2 mil figure drops to $30.7 mil. Tacking on $11 mil for the Shantee Orr deal, my current extremely rough estimate for 2008 has the Jaguars at $41.7 mil under. They'll likely have a few more moves before the 2008 season officially begins on February 29th, including the handing out of tenders for EFAs and RFAs, which will probably knock this figure down to something like $35 mil.
