The Jaguars made two roster moves today by placing Sensabaugh on IR and by re-signing Jamaal Fudge. Sensabaugh's cap hit will continue to count in full while on IR. Fudge returns with a base salary of $360,000. Over the remaining 15 weeks that works out to $317,647. Tacking on this cap hit brings the Jaguars to $17.13 mil under the cap.

After five weeks of inactivity when it comes to roster moves, the Jaguars finally made a couple when they released OLB Pat Thomas and picked up QB Todd Bouman. Within the next couple weeks they'll also have to make a decision of Brian Smith who's time on theri PUP list is about up. Smith will either have to be placed on IR, or else activated to the roster while waiving another player.

Pat Thomas' release leaves him with dead money equal to 7 weeks worth of salary at the $435,000 rate ($179,117) plus his remaining signing bonus hit of $22,667. Together that works out to a $201,784 dead money hit compared to his prior cap hit of $457,667.

Todd Bouman signed on for a $820,000 base salary, which is the minimum veteran salary of a player with 10 or more accrued seasons. I'm not aware of him receiving any bonus money, so I'm assuming here that this is still a Beneficial Salary Program contract. Over the final nine weeks, his overall base salary works out to $434,118. Under BSP rules, the Jaguars are responsible for $270,000 (9 weeks at the $510,000 rate) with the league paying his remaining salary.

With Thomas' release saving $255,883, and with Bouman's addition counting $270,000, the net result of these roster moves is a mere $14,117. Subtracting this amount bring the Jaguars to $17.11 mil under the cap. My raw data is updated as always on the first page of this thread, and you can now see my spreadsheet at www.freewebs.com/jags02/capinfo.htm.

Deuce,
I just found this on NFL.com. If you go to the September 1 listing, it states that B. Smith has been cut, and no other mention of him. Is there any way to tell if he is still a Jaguar?

Deuce,
I just found this on NFL.com. If you go to the September 1 listing, it states that B. Smith has been cut, and no other mention of him. Is there any way to tell if he is still a Jaguar?

Yeah, there's one way to be pretty darn sure, and that's by looking up his name at the NFLPA's active player search. They still have Brian Smith listed with his salary, and that tells me he's still on the roster. Now they are sometimes well behind transactions, but usually no more than a couple weeks. Also, Vic announced on August 26th that the Jaguars placed Smith on their PUP list. Why would they waive him four days later when he's roster exempt while on the list?

Usually nfl.com has their faces straight, but in this case they're wrong. You'd like to think that their transations page is accurate, but that's not the only mistake. Notice that they don't even list Pat Thomas as being waived. Also, alongside Brian Smith's listing they show Tony Gilbert as having been cut. Only, he wasn't cut. Gilbert was placed on the Jaguars IR list, and he's still on it.

While I'm at it, none of the UDFAs who signed immediately after the draft (including Lester Ricard and D.D. Terry) are listed as having signed. In May they cut Chris Hanson and signed Rashod Moulton, but neither transaction is listed. UDFAs Danny Murray and Dan Parrish were waived later on, but again no mention. Then they list several of the Jaguars draft picks who signed, but neglected to list Podlesh, Gattis, Broussard, Nkang, or Carnahan. They do correctly list that Chris Roberson was placed on IR in early August, although they missed that Anthony Pudewell was placed on the IR list along with him (note that Roberson and Pudewell are expected to be waived-injured as neither is listed on the official IR list on this site). I'll overlook the two one-day signings (Eric Wilber and Chris Jackson) that they probably purposely left out. Joe Anoai signed on for a couple weeks prior to the final cuts, but he's nowhere to be found. From the first round of cuts they left out Kiser, Ricard and Woods, and from the second round they left out Anoai, Moulton and Smolko. They completely left out that Pearman was traded to the Seahawks for a 5th round pick.

How do I know all this? Well, I have my own transactions list detailed out on my roster located at my site (in my sig), although you can also find every transaction and its cap implication within this very thread.

The Jaguars signed Grady Jackson a few days ago, although the team never did release any financial details. We do have one clue, however, in that his agent explained he did receive a pay raise. We also know his base salary which is now listed at the NFLPA, and that's $1.1 mil on the year or $64,700 per week. Jackson had a $1 mil base salary with the Falcons, which worked out to roughly $58,800 per week, so with his base salary alone his pay raise is confirmed.

The big question is if he received any bonus money on top of base salary, which for the final nine weeks of the season totals $582,353. I'm thinking since his base salary alone represents a pay raise, that he received only a modicum signing bonus if any. I'll guess that he received no bonus, but if anyone learns differently please let me know.

A few other moves have to be accounted for as well...

  • DT Tony McDaniel was placed on the IR List
  • OT Richard Collier was placed on the Suspended-Reserve List
  • TE Isaac Smolko was activated to the roster

McDaniel's cap hit remains the same while on IR, as does Collier's while suspended. Smolko is getting the rookie minimum salary which over the final nine weeks works out to $150,882. This is on top of the $37,600 he's already made while on the Practice Squad.

After accounting for all of these moves, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $16.38 mil under the cap.

I have some more updating to do this weekend, but in the meantime I'm now really wondering about Brian Smith. The Jaguars must have made their decision by now, so what did they decide to do. If anybody knows anything our rookie DE's status, please let me know.

Well I still don't know what the Jaguars did with Brian Smith, but I'm making it my new mission to find out. For now, however, I'll have to make the assumption that Brian was placed on the Jaguars IR List meaning his cap hit will continue to count in full.

Moving on, I need to account for a recent flurry of roster moves. I'll start by simply listing the moves...

  • Durant suspended for two games by Jaguars
  • Collier suspended for two games by Jaguars (I mentioned this before, but the term was not specified in order to account for)
  • Stroud suspended for four games by NFL
  • Naeole placed on IR
  • Tuten Reyes re-signed
  • Jorge Cordova re-signed
  • Roy Manning re-signed
  • Isaac Smolko waived
  • Jeremy Mincey activated from Practice Squad
  • Chad Owens signed to the Practice Squad

After the Titans game Durant and Collier are expected to return to the active roster with two other players being released (or placed on IR).  If I were a bubble player active this week in Tennessee, I wouldn't want to give the Jaguars any reason to cut me. Job security for some players is on the line in this game. Two weeks later Stroud should return with yet another player released.

As game checks are forfeited by suspended players, the team is credited directly against the cap. To account for this I've deducted each suspended player's losses from his overall cap hit. Stroud is out $332,941, Collier is out 42,353, and Durant is out $33,530.

Naeole's $2.6 mil cap hit continues to count in full while on IR.

Tuten Reyes was brought back. As a vested vet who was on the active roster week 1, Reyes was already in the books as a $510,000 dead money hit. He actually commands a $720,000 base salary, but I assumed that his initial contract qualied for the Beneficial Salary Program with the league having paid him the difference. With him being brought back he's again in the books for the minimum base salary of a player with 7-9 years experience, and this time I believe the salary counts in full since this is money on top of what he's already been paid. Tacking on 8 weeks at the $720,000 rate we're talking about an additional $338,824.

Jorge Cordova is in the books for eight weeks at the $360,000 rate, or $169,412.  He's also in the books for next year with a $445,000 base salary.

Roy Manning is in the books for eight weeks at the $435,000 rate, or $204,706.  He's also in the books for next year with a $520,000 base salary.

Isaac Smolko was waived after only one week, but I believe players are due a minimum of three weekly paycheck upon activation from the Practice Squad. Altogether I have Smolko having earned $37,600 for 8 weeks on the Practice Squad along with 3 rookie paychecks worth a total of $50,294 counting as dead money. I imagine they'll soon add him back to the Practice Squad.

Jeremy Mincey has now been activated from the Practice Squad. I have him down as having earned $42,300 as a member of the Practice Squad for the first 9 weeks of the season. On top of this he's now in the books at the $360,000 rate for the final eight weeks which works out to $169,412. I suspect he's also signed on for next year at the $445,000 rate, but I've yet to verify this.

Chad Owens is set to earn $37,600 as a Practice Squad member for the final seven weeks.

Finally, it appears the team is short a Practice Squad member. When they activated Smolko they never did activate anyone to replace him. Recently they signed Chad Owens to the squad while activating Jeremy Mincey to the roster, but that's an even swap. The team is allowed 8 P.S. members plus their international P.S. member, but they only have 7 members plus their International member Samuel Gutekunst. The 7 members are...

  1. OT Andrew Carnahan
  2. DT Walter Curry
  3. CB Rashod Moulton
  4. WR/KR Chad Owens
  5. QB Lester Ricard, Jr.
  6. WR Charles Sharon
  7. RB D.D. Terry

If you know of someone I'm missing, please let me know. Each week that the squad is short one member I'm subtracting $4,700 from the expected Practice Squad total.

Having tallied everything up in this reply, I'm now showing the Jaguars at $15.99 mil under the cap.

EDIT: I edited this post and one before it because I was off a week as far as where they are during the season. For instance, in this post I was calculating for players being paid for the final seven weeks, but actually eight weeks remain.

02,

on Smolko I think I remember reading that you were due three game checks if you were signed off another team's practice squad, but if it was your own you didn't have that guarantee.

You might be right. I'll have to look into this deeper.

I found a past Ask Vic answer where he mentioned that when a team signs a player off of another team's Practice Squad, then they owe that player three game checks. I couldn't find verification that the same is true when you simply activate a player off your own squad, and since Vic worded it like that I'm now inclined to think you are correct. So I've reduced Smolko's game checks from three to two. With that said, I'm still looking to verify this.

Altogether I have Smolko getting 15 weeks of Practice Squad pay along with two rookie game checks. While he was on the roster for two weeks there was nobody signed to take his place on the Practice Squad, which in turn reduced the Practice Squad total from $719,100 ($4,700 x 17 weeks x 9 players) to $709,700.
