Thanks for the heads up 02, Good to hear vance is trying to rope Byron in sooner than later. It would be in Byrons Best interest to wait...

Speaking of heads up don't forget to get your roster in...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Byron's next deal gets done this season. As for your thread link, it doesn't work. Besides that, I'll have to wait until we have some more specifics. Lageman is now saying he doubts we'll even see that many 3WR sets this year implying that we'll only keep 5 WRs.

Hopefully when the Webmaster gets the stickys going this thread will receive sticky status as it has had in the past.
This thread is now 'pinned', which is how this MB software refers to what were known as 'stickies' on the old MB software.

Let me take a second to thank the mods on this board for making this thread happen. You guys are awesome. Jm2, thanks for reassuring me that my thread would get "pinned." Jm1, thanks for actually pinning the thread. And Jm3, thanks for editing my RAW DATA page for me. It may have something to do with the post being so big, but for some reason the board isn't letting me edit the opening post even though I can still edit other posts. Keep up the good work guys. Praise Mod!!!

Jags02 (6/7/2006)
Early in the offseason Vance made a comment that suggested he's been in off-and-on talks with Byron's agent since January. I'm sure Vance would like to get Byron inked this offseason, but that much more easier said than done. Vance is only going to offer so much, and yet Byron has to sign it knowing he can probably get more if he has a breakout season. My hunch is that something will get worked out during the season.

As always Jags02 thx for your awesome work on the cap info.  That is my feelings exactly on Byron's status.  IMO it would be silly for him to sign a new contract before this season begins as he knows for sure that his value will go up if he has a great season.

Jimmy Smith question

Per NFLPA.He is still on our books, which tells me even though he said he retired he hasn't exactly signed his papers yet, which still makes him on our active roster.

So shouldn't he still be on the active "51" ?

Well, yes and no. "Yes" he still counting among the 51 most expensive cap hits, but "no," as far as I know he's not "active."

I believe his retirement has already been made official. Some teams will delay a player's official retirment until June 2, even if he announced it months earlier, in order to spread out his amortization over two years. But with Jimmy going into his final season under contract there's no advantage to such a delay, and there's no other reason I can think of to even technically hang onto him.

You can't always go by the NFLPA site because they'll often list players on there long after they're gone. They're human too, and often it shows. I have him as already retired having already computed the savings into my spreadsheet, but if you look you'll also notice that his cap hit is still listed at #17 among the top 51. Even if a player retires or is released or traded, if his cap hit remains among the 51 most expensive, his name remains on the list. In other words, for Jimmy I'm counting roughly $1.75 mil in dead money, but this dead money hit is still part of the top 51 as opposed to counting seperately even though he's not "active."

The T-U seems to have some player cap updates this morning, but I'm hesitant to change my data as a result even though my data is an estimate in each case. I may make this change in the future, but for now I'll just explain what's going on.

At the end of Hubbuch's "NOTEBOOK" he points out...

Greisen, Hymes receive two-year contracts

The Jaguars gave linebacker Nick Greisen a two-year, $2.1 million contract when they signed the former New York Giant in April, according to records supplied by the players' union.

Former Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Randy Hymes also received a two-year deal when he signed last month. Hymes' contract is worth $1.1 million, the NFLPA said.

Ex-Jaguars wideout Troy Edwards was given a one-year, $710,000 deal when the team brought him back last month. Former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Wayne Hunter, recently claimed off waivers, has one year left on his contract, which is worth $721,600.

My assumption is that he's merely looking at the base salary figures as presented at nflpa.org, but then again you'd think he has a media password to also get their bonus info. This is why I may actually make this change, but for now I want to wait at least a few days to see if this can be verified.

In all four cases above, the totals Bart is reporting is equal to the total of their base salaries. By that he's saying that none of these four players received any bonus money, and frankly that surprises me. I know Wayne Hunter didn't get anything because he was claimed off waivers wherein his base salary simply transfers over with no bonus money involved. However, I was estimating bonus money for the other three.

For Nick Greisen I was estimating a $700,000 roster bonus due this year. His base salaries are $700,000 this year and $1.4 mil next year, which together total $2.1 mil, but I figured that as a mid-tier free agent he'd still demand some decent bonus money on top of his salary. A $700,000 roster bonus sounded like a good guess because it would give him a $1.4 mil cap hit in both years making it a "flat contract" while also allowing them to release him next year if need be while saving his entire cap hit.

For Troy Edwards I figured that they gave him the maximum signing bonus that qualifies for a BPA contract. That is to say it makes sense for them to have given him a $40,000 signing bonus wherein he'd actually only count a total of $540,000 even though his reported base salary is $710,000. What happens in a BPA contract is that the additional $210,000 is paid to him by the league out of a pool set up for this purpose. Had he been given no bonus as Bart is saying here, then he'd only count $500,000 in the Jaguars books.

Finally, on Randy Hymes two-year contract I was estimating a $50,000 bonus. Since he only has three seasons officially accrued, his minimum base salary is already only $500,000 meaning the BPA rule doesn't apply. His base salaries are %500,000 this year and then $600,000 next year resulting in the $1.1 mil total without any bonus money, but my estimate has him at a $1.15 mil total.

So Bart may be correct here meaning I have some changes to make, but again I want to be sure he's not just going with base salary figures that someone gave him.
