The RAW DATA in this post will always mark the start of my SALARY CAP THREAD, and my signature will always at least include a link to my SPREADSHEET.  Any changes made to this data or my spreadsheet will be explained as I make them so that you can follow along. Feel free to ask me any cap related questions in this thread, and I'll usually respond within a day. Afterall, the intent of this thread has always been to better educate readers on how the NFL salary cap works.

So what is Rob Meier's contract?

I'll explain by showing you how to read the "RAW DATA" entries...

Rob Meier: $585,000; $960,000 (estimate) (2007: $1,095,000; 2008: $1,095,000; 2009: UFA) [amortization = $1,125,000 (estimate)]

First note where I say "estimate." That means that the numbers used here are logical assumptions, but not necessarily accurate. This also means that I haven't seen any published media reports detailing his bonus money.

In order these numbers are meant to be read...

  1. $585,000 base salary this year
  2. $960,000 estimated cap hit this year
  3. $1,095,000 base salary in 2007
  4. $1,095,000 base salary in 2008
  5. Set to become an Unrestricted Free Agent in 2009
  6. $1,125,000 estimated bonus amortization

Rob signed a new contract as a UFA this offseason, and if my bonus assumptions are correct this implies a 3-year contract worth $3.9 mil. It wouldn't surprise me if he has $50,000 workout bonuses in each of the next two years making this an even $4 mil contract, but I'd like to see something backing up this assumption in print before jumping to that conclusion. I don't believe his bonus money or overall contract amount has ever been reported.

Also, I noticed one quip saying that Meier got a $375,000 bonus, but I'm simply going with the assumption that this was referring to his signing bonus hit this year. But that may have instead referred to his getting this much as a roster bonus with him getting similar roster bonuses in the next two years instead.

The base salaries for Greg Estandia are now up, so I'm adding him to my info. He recently signed a two-year contract as an undrafted rookie free agent with base salaries of $275,000 this year and $360,000 next year. Like with all UDFA's I'm estimating a rather high signing bonus amount (to stay on the safe side) of $5,000 on the two-year deal. Since his cap hit does not count among the 51 most expensive, the only thing that counts against the cap would be his signing bonus hit of $2,500 (it's more likely something like $750).

After also subtracting for the ninth week of workouts (we're starting the 9th week), I'm now showing the Jaguars at $17.24 mil under, although keep in mind what I was saying from the prior thread about how a prior quote from Vance suggests the actual number is a few thousand less. I'm practically begging for a new media quote on where the Jaguars currently are in order to properly adjust the overall number.

WOW 15 Mil+ under the cap is huge. If I am the FO I am getting Byron resigned before the season starts and his value to the team is actually revealed. I bet we could resign him at the fraction of the price now than to wait till the end of the season. This would be a great way to utilize atleast 10-13 Mil. this season.

I am figuring around a 21 Mil SB 7 Year contract. Now is the time to lock Byron down for the long haul. Byronis like a piece of realestate that is in a remote but very nice location. The team is about to bridge the Gap talent wise to where his is, thing is we need to get his contract done before the bridge is complete... Come on Paul let's geterdone

Early in the offseason Vance made a comment that suggested he's been in off-and-on talks with Byron's agent since January. I'm sure Vance would like to get Byron inked this offseason, but that much more easier said than done. Vance is only going to offer so much, and yet Byron has to sign it knowing he can probably get more if he has a breakout season. My hunch is that something will get worked out during the season.
