I'm over trying to convince anyone else that this is a good cause. For that matter, I'm having my own doubts about sending money oversees after reading this...

The state-run China Daily also warned Tuesday that people should guard against Internet fraud while donating to quake victims. Two people were arrested in Guangdong province in southern China for setting up a fake donation Web site.

That said, you should at least keep somewhat informed of what's going on over there. The same article talked about how a warning of a "rather great" chance of a magnitude 6 to 7 aftershock sparked a panic with residents fleeing in masses. Tensions are as high as ever in the wake of so much death. Here's the latest figures...

China's Cabinet said the confirmed death toll rose to 34,073, although it is expected to climb. Another 5,260 remained buried in Sichuan, the provincial government said. Almost 250,000 are injured.

If you'd like to help, you may want to consider the following...

Signaling it wants help to deal with millions of homeless and injured survivors, China said it would accept foreign medical teams and made an international appeal for tents to provide shelter for the coming rainy season.

Yes, I fear China.

They have 2 billion people living there. That's 1/3 of the entire world in one country.

As their economy continues to expand so will the technology of their military.. it's no longer the prospect of going against aging MiGs and T-54 tanks.. these are updated and ready for modern war weapons...

Right now we could take China.. that won't be the case in 10 years.. so why help what we know will be our enemy.

Our enemies sure did.. and thats what China is.

It's a few steps from a cold war with them as of today..

The Chinese Government can easily supply aid anywhere they see fit at anytime.. it's still a Communist Dictatorship over there.. stop spending money refurbishing your tanks and give it to your people.. but the Chinese government doesn't care at all about starving people.. as long as Beijing is fat and happy so are they.

If the Chinese government doesn't care about starving people over there, that's all the more reason we should care. I've read about a time when men's hearts will grow cold, and this thread makes me think we're already there. Do you guys really think that by giving $25 for emergency refief after one of the world's largest disaster's ever is going to help the Chinese government ultimately defeat America? Some of you need to check yourselves. Is your faith in our military that weak? Is your compassion for human life that low?

On another note, thank you Stormy. You're proof that not everyone's heart has grown cold.

The Chinese run the largest intelligence services in the world. The Chinese government steals governmental, corporate and technological secrets from the US and Europe non-stop.

The Chinese government has some of the most dire enviromental polices in the world. Their pollution output is well above the rest of the world COMBINED. At the same time the nation of China is experiencing a huge economic boom. Let the Chinese clean their own house and care for their own children.

Are you suggesting we send money to Unicef (an organization that's very corrupt to begin with) to pay the Chinese government for relief suppiles for the Chinese people? It sounds to me like Unicef is just using the disaster as another excuse to fatten the pockets of the bureaucrats.[/quote]

An excuse to fatten the pocket of bureaucrats? I had no idea were such the conspiracy theorist. The fund uses money to help fatten the bellies of children who haven't eaten for a while.

Notice it says "CAN BUY" and not "WILL BUY" !!!! I changed it below:

$244 WILL BUY a large $3 wool blanket to protect children from the cold during an emergency, the other $241 will go to the CEO's lunch expenditures and exotic vacation fund.

I realize how easy it is to make light of the situation in China, but I still believe we can help rescue lives. I looked at the links Stormy brought up, and found this quote from the third link rather interesting...

Additionally, the Government of China has formally requested assistance from the international community to help meet the needs of those affected. Both cash and relief supplies have been requested, but field assessment missions by outside organizations are not recommended due to the extreme difficulty in traveling to the worst affected areas.
In response, UNICEF China is mobilizing urgently needed relief supplies with immediate emphasis on health and medical kits, tents and shelter materials and clean water and sanitation supplies. -Unicef

I noticed another article earlier in the day saying to be careful about sending money overseas. Several organizations would like to help, but realisically can't do all that much. Unicef (United Nations Children's Fund) is an organization working directly with Chinese relief efforts, although their focus is on primarily on saving and lending much needed aid to children. They estimate an immediate need of $5 mil.

I think you've backed the wrong horse here '02. The government of China has more than enough money to cover any financial solution to the disaster. If we send money to help, it will just free up funds that the Chinese government can spend on weapons instead.

I think what he is trying to say is we buy alot of stuff that is made in China. They get a good portion of our money that way.

The scope of this tragedy goes beyond anything I've seen before. Katrina is probaly the closest example. The U.S. had to allocate over $50 billion in emergency aid to help resolve that crisis, and I did hear that were donations of help from around the world. I don't know that folks in these remote areas of China had much money to give, but it's not the time to play, "what have you done for me."

There's no telling the cost right now. I imagine the Chinese are looking at over $100 billion just to replace infrasture. I'm sure they're doing all they can for their people, but they need so much more It's not a question of whether this is the most worthy charity. I'm not asking for anyone to give up their life savings. I'm asking for you each to join with me by shelling out $25 to help ease this crisis, and I'm certain that every last penny will go to good use.

I don't have a lot of money to give, and you won't see me just sending money to any charity. But when American Idol had their "Idol Gives Back" special last year, I was compelled to give $25. This year my wife and I decided to do the same. That may not seem like much, but I do so knowing that so many more are doing the same. In my book, that's truly a worthy cause.

This cause, I firmly believe, is just as worthy. I believe the official death toll from the devestating Chinese earthquakes is around 15,000, but some analsyts are projecting that the final number will be around 120,000 dead. Nearly 400 dams crumbled, and at least one city lost at least 70 percent of its population. Children were crushed at school, and the last I heard is that they still hadn't made it to the most remote cities as 5.0 tremors continue to pour in. There have been earthquakes this big in the past, but they rarely ever last as long as this one did. I forget the official duration, but I think it was something like 3 minutes. If you've ever been in an earthquake you know that 3 minutes is a long time, especially for a 7.6 earthquake.

I'm going to give $25 to for Chinese earthquake relief. But I don't intend to be alone in doing so. I'm asking for our entire Jaguars family to join with me in giving. If you can afford more, give multiples of $25, but keep this number pouring in. It's a good solid number that we all can afford.

Here's the catch. I don't know where to send it to, and that's where I want your help. We need to act as a team to determine the ideal place to send money to get to where it needs to go. I trust our judgement if most of us agree on a particular place.

Are you with me? I feel in my gut that if we all pitch in, that our extended Jaguars family...as in the players, coaches and owners...will ultimately pitch in as well. Maybe theyll even make it an official Jaguars cause. In any event, as a board we can do our part, and I'm convinced deep down that others will follow.
