For a first year coach, with a total different game plan the Cowher had, he did **** good. Ya, he showed inexperience in the playoffs, but that is to be expected.[/quote]

There is no way you can put a first year coach that is 0-1 in the playoffs and who was coaching in his first year the defending SB champs in the top five in the league over any coach that has won a SB, which would be Gruden, Dungy, Holmgreen, BB, Shanahan and Brian Billick.

Over rated: Mike Shanahan, and Belicheat. They cheated their assess off to build their rep.

Under rated: **** Juaron for a lack of a better answer. In this over hyped league it is hard to find someone that is under rated. TC was before, but not after winning the SB.

Make sure that you differentiate between what you as a fan feel, and what the players feel. Losing a close game is tough, and it does hang with you, but a lot of times you can define it by saying that you were just one play away. It happens to us all.

But getting blown out means that there was nothing you could do to stop a team. I remember watching back in 2000 when Jacksonville went to Indianapolis and T. Mathis almost single-handedly destroyed the Jacksonville secondary on route to a 43-14 win. As a player, those are the games that stick with you because unless you get back on track, you can really start to spiral down due to a lack of confidence.

Holmgreen I don't think is overrated. If "anybody" could have coached the Pack to the SB, how come no other coach since Vince Lombardi has taken them there? How come no other coach has ever taken the Seahawks to the SB? If SB XL had been called by the refs correctly, he would be the only head coach with a SB championship with two different teams. As it is, he is on the short list of coaches to take two different teams to the SUperbowl as head coach (Shula, Vermeil and Holmgreen are the only ones I can think of)

Marvin Lewis for me, I've never really liked him. They always talk how the Bengals will do great things and always have a mediocre year except the one year they made the playoffs. Other than that, it was just a sub-par team.

He's had like 5 winning seasons in his 14 seasons.

Would you take a winning season @ every 3 years?

Clearly anywhere else that is unacceptable.

I'm shocked no one stated Mike Holmgren the most overrated coach in the NFL. The 'hawks play in the NFL version of the Big East. Was credited with being a good coach in Green Bay when anybody could've coached the pack to the SuperBowls with that assemble of talent.

Overrated:

Sean Payton - Has a good gameplan, but I think that the secret is out and he doesn't have an answer for it. I can't help but think that he got seriously out-coached in Chicago in the Playoffs.
Jeff Fisher - Reminds me of the old LSU basketball coach, Dale Brown. He can do a lot with a little, but if you give him talent, he can't make it work. I think that he is a better motivator than anything, but that record of his just seems to get worse and worse. He is a powerful coach, but I don't think he's as good as his press clippings.
Andy Reid - I think that he has been dining on a weak NFC for years now, and now that they have caught up to him, the cracks are showing. Underrated:

Tony Dungy - I know, I know, he'w won a Super Bowl and all of that so how can he be underrated? How does the fact that his team got absolutely steam-rolled in week 14 division game and he managed to get them under control and still win a Super Bowl not go down as one of the greatest stretch run coaching feats ever? Think about how damaged that team was after that loss. And he still had them playing at a lights out level through the playoffs.
Mike McCarthy - Has handled the fading of Brett Favre nicely and built a very nice roster along the way. Yeah, Favre was a big reason why they did so well last season, but that's a strong team they have up there and I can't help but think that McCarthy is a big reason why.
Herm Edwards - Yeah, Herm's crazy, we all know that. And he hasn't done so well in the Playoffs, but he puts together a nice team. Remember Kansas City was going to fade if you put Vince Lombardi in charge of that roster, Edwards just got caught in the transition. He only had 2 losing seasons in New York and in one of them he had 5 starting QB's. That'll lose anybody 10 games.

I would also go with Fisher as overrated. I don't think he is a bad coach, but just not as good as everyone claims. His overall record is pretty mediocre.

Also, though not currently employed and mainly based on his absolutely abyssmal playoff record, Shcottenheimer.

I am beginning to wonder about Gruden, but I would be willing to give him some time to see how he can improve the Bucs. Yes, they made the playoffs last year, but really they almost won by defualt. That division sucks. Atlanta and Carolina were awful last year.

Here is fisher's record. 538 winning percentage, 3 divisional titles in 16 years (about what would be expected at random or just by chance), 5-5 in the playoffs. Average division finish is 2.4. There really is nothing spectacular in his resume. The only thing that stands out that separates him from others is the one SB appearance.

For a head coach I agree with TMD, Jeff Fisher. Norv Turner is a terrible head coach, but he's generally viewed that way. Fisher had four out of five years where he took an over-the-cap team to the playoffs, and he did well last year, but he mostly just limped along. He's only had five seasons out of 13 over .500, not exactly Bill Walsh stats, yet he's always described as one of the top coaches.

I will disagree with you {I just re-read the thread- I DISAGREE WITH MAD DOG, NOT THE CLOT TROLL(APTLY NAMED :P )} about jeff fisher- he gets a lot from his team of nobodys. Couglin could have JUST AS EASILY made a quick departure in the playoffs, or missed them entirely. do you guys think his defense saved his a$$ (the pick against brett favre) In fact that giants team was the luckiest to advance to a superbowl since pittsburgh in that luck filled season.

herm edwards john gruden and wade phillips are underrated to me or does everybody already think they all are great? How about romeo crennel and brian billick? Our man here in jax Jack DelRio is a bit underrated- he was anchored by useless Quarterbacks at the beginning for a while there both in brunell an leftwich, but he is bullying through the league now.

and is it possible to say that dungy is underrated. The pundits seem to look just at his talent pool from bucs and clots. These were no doubt good teams but good coaching of good players is important.
