Emailed question - "Can Reggie Nelson play Corner? Can Rashean Mathis play Safety? I ask because to the untrained eye limiting Nelson's responsibilities and letting Mathis ball hawk by intention would help the individuals in the secondary."

Vic - "I'll tell you what; I said it at the end of last year and I'm going to say it again now... I believe Reggie Nelson could be the solution at CB. When you put a guy at CB and he has the athletic ability to do it...
#1 He's not a real good tackle, #2 physical football is not his game..."

Sexton - "Right"

Vic - "His game is athletic ability. Here's a guy who can run, jump, turn his hips... the whole bit. You take a guy like that, you put him in coverage... He doesn't have to bother with all the schemes and getting everybody into position and all that stuff..."

Sexton - "Just lock him down and play him."

Vic - "Yeah. Here... go! Cover here! And I think he could do it."

Lageman - "I think that that was kinda the original plan this year. Different defense, more man, got a Safety that can play man in Reggie Nelson, then all of a sudden..."

Thanks for that. I have no doubt he has the athletic ability, but I always figured the worst part of his game was is man on man. I just assumed they would have tried it already.

Why stop with moving 25 Live to CB why not switch to the 3-4 D and then Run the SPREAD.. Heck if it works in the week to week RIGORS of the SEC how can it fail in the Nfl.:cool:

I'm curious, where did Vic mention considering moving Nelson?

Nelson is adequate at tackling, and he has the occasional big hit. If that's one of his weaknesses then he's doing alright. I don't know if "football intelligence" is a weakness. He has great instincts, but he occasionally misses assignments because he's always going for the big play. Nelson's biggest problem is his One-on-One coverage. He wouldn't do well at corner.[/quote]

thats when teams still threw on him a lot... because when you have a CB that can shut down his entire side with no help... you need to use that

i like the idea.. i wish we would have thought of that before we gave d. flo all that money though... free safeties are a dime a dozen.. its hard to find a reliable corner in this league and i think reggie could have developed the same way rashean did

We don't play much man coverage though. I actually haven't seen the team use it since early in the season, where we were fruitlessly blitzing a lot and thus, leaving our CB`s on an island. We are a Cover 2 team, which means that there should be safety help for the CB`s. Nelson would fare well in this system as a Cover 2 CB. And you can`t attribute all of his mistakes to him simply going for the big play. If that were the case, the coaches would have chewed him out about it on numerous occassions, and he would have gotten the not so subtle hint that he shouldn`t be taking so many chances. His mistakes can be attributed to him missing assignments, which is the result of him not having a grasp of the finer points of playing the FS position. Put him at CB, and he wouldn`t have to think as much - he could simply react.

Nelson isn't that good at man-to-man, and that's why he's safety. He's a playmaker. He works better in zone. If you put him at corner then you'll see that he doesn't play his man that well.

The knock of Reggie was that he suffers from the Vince Young Intelligence Syndrome. It was said that his forte was not intelligence. Remember we drafted Rashean Mathis to play safety and we all see the dividends that have paid off by moving him to CB. Deon Grant was often referred to as one of the most intelligent FS's in the league and if you can remember to 2 seasons ago we were much better in pass coverage. Reggie's responsibility is to understand the whole defense and I am not to sure if he actually has the ability to do that, I think that is why he is out of position alot.

I don't know how you can't at least consider it. True Nelson has alot of range, which is good for a safety, but how many times do you see him out of position or late getting to the spot where the ball is thrown? Plenty!

If you just tell him to go cover somebody, I think he could excel there. Having good corners is more important than having good safties IMO. Plus Brian Williams is better in the safety role than he is in the CB role.

Nelson's at his best when he's able to roam and make plays. Just because he can also cover doesn't mean we have a knee-jerk reaction and move him to corner.

I am not sure if this will work this year, but it is something they should consider next year. Reggie Nelson and Rashean Mathis would easily shut down the top to WR's of opposing teams if he switched to CB. Currently at FS he is having difficulty understanding what is expected of him, he is a ball hawk and sometimes doesnt play the coverage as he is supposed to which leaves an opposing receiver/tight end wide open. Matt Ryan burned him in the preseason, Derek Anderson burned him Sunday on the 4th down play and I think he would be much better with being a CB locked into man to man coverage.

CB- Rashean Mathis, Reggie Nelson

FS- Brian Williams

SS- Sensabaugh, or draft prospect
