Negative advertising is still advertising. People talking about the folio will actually get more readers. Take Joe Blow who is standing in line at the Chinese take out joint. He has never read the paper in his life, but looks over at the stack of folios and remembers people at work talking about it the other day. So Joe walks over and picks one up to see what all the fuss was about. They gained another reader...that is what they want.[/quote]

It's outrageous. I like the idea of going to the people who advertise there and expressing our concern. Mention that if they continue to support such garbage, they'll be losing a lot of "Jag fan" business. Does anyone have a copy and we can start compiling a list of advertisers and we can draft either a form letter, or an individual letter and send it to the managers of these companies. We can sign a petition or something, and include it in the letter. Just brainstorming here..

This doesn't surprise me, coming from Folio. During my undergrad years at UNF, I had a journalism prof who used to write for Folio and apparently is married to a former editor there. She is very liberal and poked fun of UNF's president, John Delaney, for not having the "academic" credentials necessary, in her mind, to lead the school. Her criticism mainly stemmed from the fact that she and her colleagues are liberal and can't stand a conservative at the helm of the school. However, college presidents are primarily figurehead fundraiser types. Delaney can raise more money and attention for the school, being an ex-mayor, than some liberal academic. I guess this truth escaped her. I made sure to note her criticism of Delaney (to a captive audience of students) in my evaluation of her at the end of the course.

The Folio is a progressive rag. The editors/contributors intent is to induce changes for the positive within the community; or, rather, interest enough like-minded readers to sell advertising. I don't know how this was presented. I haven't seen it. This particular piece seems to me more of a commentary on Jacksonville than on Richard Collier, and some of its resident's ignorant stance that they won't suppport the Jags because they won't support thugs moreso than making fun of a man because he was shot. Businesses, advertise here if you think your base demographic would think this is acceptable.

So, what can we do? Writing the Folio? Jaggies, please... It's the businesses that care about the content in the publications they advertise in.

Write the businesses. Let THEM know you're upset.

Start by getting your boss to stop allowing Folio to be distributed in your establishment. I know it's tough to not highlight good press, but would the management be down with a "thanks but no thanks" approach to whatever Folio will give you to document the "Best of Jax" designation?[/quote]

I don't know why you would think that. I don't have any agenda toward them. In fact, in the past I have been appreciative of some of the reporting they do, as it provided a counter-point to other news in the city, and it's good to read as many viewpoints as possible, even those I may not agree with.

I was providing a suggestion to another poster who wants to take a more demonstrative action against them than just sending an email to complain.

I've always shrugged off their Jaguar-hate until I read about this. I feel that advocating or joking about the shooting, or any shooting in this city, is over the line. I've sent an email and politely said my peace. That won't, however, keep me from interacting further with posters in this thread for as long as it lasts.

I'm working on an email now that I'll be sending to the local sports anchors, Ken Amaro, and our local AM radio guys. I also have a friend who works for one of the local FM radio stations, and I'm filling him in on the article and seeing what he wants to do with it.i I also changed my Myspace name to "Boycott the Folio" and will be posting a bulletin about this everyday. I'm forwarding the information to all my Jags friends and trying to get the word out. We as fans have to stand up and say that it's not okay. I'm incredibly sensitive about the Richard Collier situation and it still breaks my heart to think about what happened, it infuriates me to think about someone mocking the tragedy.

The comment is disgusting. And in regard to the clown who said its based of what the readers say, that may be true, but give me a break....the editor had final call and should never have printed it, period.

What bothers me even more is the fact that Folio even has this as one of their "Best of". I mean, Best reason to diss the Jags. That is truly sad. I know the people that run this paper were picked on high school, wear tight pants and certain shades of mascara, tend to smell like cabbage, listen to "emotional" music, have intimate partners of both persuasion and etc., but as someone before said they just have NO CLUE, especially regarding the local economic benefit of the Jags.

Start by getting your boss to stop allowing Folio to be distributed in your establishment. I know it's tough to not highlight good press, but would the management be down with a "thanks but no thanks" approach to whatever Folio will give you to document the "Best of Jax" designation?
