I don't know what other injury he could have had while resting his broken hip. I do know that I don't believe everything I hear publicly from the coaches. I hope Brian Smith gets enough time to regain his abilities and contribute to the team but we all know if "ya' ain't on the field, ya' can't be evaluated."

I guess I can understand that, but it's still just a Fourth Rounder. Pretty much every guy taken that late has some kind of question about him. Whether it's injury, level of competition, character, inconsistency, whatever.

Why is it such a big deal if another Fourth Round selection doesn't make it?

It is true the Jags are value hunters. But we have to be in a salary cap league. Had Brian Smith worked into a role we would not of had to draft Groves. But somebody is on the bubble at DE and i will bet its him. He has to have a great camp. Personally me, Brian Smith and Mike Walker are going to have a hard proving they aren't bust. Both of their positions became lots more competitive. And if they are both on the roster ill be surprised.

This is a Fourth Round guy coming off of a major injury... what did you expect from him? He's an injury risk guy that represents a lot of upside if he pans out. Else, what did you really lose? These players are the epitome of risk-reward, and that's exactly what you get.

You have to be careful with that breakdown. If you're the whimp, you have to remain flexible. So, if 1, 2, 5, or 7 don't pan out, you need to be able to find a way to maneuver from your perch on leg #3 of that barstool at the "sports" bar in Philly so that you can shift the blame to Shack Harris on the fly. If 3, 4, or 6 turn out to be stars, you need to find a way to give credit to Del Rio and Smith for those picks.[/quote]

Don't forget he also achieved that playing his whole junior year with meniscus tear in his knee.

You'd think with that kind of mindset that he'd be trying to get out there and play. Perhaps, they're being overly cautious with him as well.

I really hope to see the jags benefit from him. He's got some serious pass rushing moves and a motor that won't stop, but his weight...

He is an equal partner of the team that make the Jaguars draft selections, so I am choosing to blame him for every bad pick since Tom Coughlin left.

I have no evedence to support this claim that he is to blame for every bad pick, (which he is, as I have decided that is the case) but I choose to blame him. He has picked failures like Leftwich, Jones and now Walker and Smith. Jack Del Rio should be cleaning toilets, its all he is good for. What was he thinking picking high risk/reward guys with a precious 4th and 3rd rounders!

Sure they took a gamble.

But it's not like they lost much if it doesn't work out.

Had they spent a higher pick on him, sure. But I think a 4th for him was a very acceptable amount of risk, especially for what he's shown he could provide if healthy.

There's ALWAYS the chance things work out. That's why it's called a risk and not a guarantee. Even the healthy ones don't work out sometimes <cough>Mattloaf<cough>

He broke his hip, but did not require surgery, just months and months of bed rest.

This excerpt is from NFLDraftScout.com:

" ...Suffered a broken right hip in game #8 against Kansas State...The injury didn't require surgery, and there was hope that he could possibly return in time for MU's bowl game, but doctors would not clear him for competition."

Yes, the whimp is really out there on the cutting edge of information with these breaking revelations. Especially the Mike Walker report. Gosh! I guess when they said he would not be ready to fully participate until TRAINING CAMP in FEBRUARY, some people interpreted that differently. Must be the reception that black and white gets in the "sports" bar in Philly. Either that, or the whimp was too distracted by the Village People tribute band that was performing at his "sports" bar on the day that the announcement came out.

As far as Brian Smith is concerned, when a 4th round pick is suddenly considered that critical selection that MUST succeed in the NFL, you know that the whimp is simply running out of targets to use to satisfy his pathetic need to bash Shack Harris.

Agree 100% on Smith. I think he'll be PUP'd or IR'd again, despite possibly being technically healthy enough to make the roster.

Walker is being held out by the staff, so it's a safe bet they've got a close eye on his conditioning.

I say you give Smith more time. Let him not only fully heal, but also build his body back to form. In late June go ahead and place him on the PUP list. You can keep him on the list through the first eight or nine weeks of the season and then activate him (he has to stay on the list for at least the first six weeks). By then there are always injury replacements on the roster you realize can be waived, and Brian just might be a late season weapon giving the Jaguars that much more of an edge down the stretch.

At 6'3" 235 lbs, I just don't see Brian Smith competing for a spot on the D-Line. He is going to have to be groomed and will compete with Brent Hawkins as a rush LB.

As far as players who are being held back from walking around in their underwear, who other than someone looking to soil their diapers, is really concerned at this stage of the off-season?
