TMD dont slip back into your old ways... hood was signed by the cardinals before any break out season ever occured and he was never even a starter with the eagles, thats why he was cheap.

my point is that rod hood is not an elite CB and no one would pay him like it but thats what the metrics showed this past season.. metrics are only ONE WAY of looking at a CB... CB is the hardest position to judge in all of the NFL

I dunno if Rod Hood is an elite CB, but he's probably a better player than some think... & he was quite a good value as a FA signing. Young, cheap (compared to what CB's like Brian Williams & Florence got) and very productive.

well its funny how those same guys who take the metrics just 1 year before were saying that florence was better than jammer... so now all the sudden after 1 year that has changed? i dont think so.. do you guys wanna know who had one of the best metrics of all cornerbacks this year? i bet 90% of hte people on this board have never heard of him... his name is rod hood of arizona... and we all know how good arizona's pass D is...

I didn't refuse to see anything. It's a valid criticism. Those are the most recent, and therefore the most relevant metrics to go on. I haven't even seen any previous metrics, since I don't know where to get them online, and I don't feel like buying that one guy's book. Those metrics (from last year) weren't just kind of bad though, they were just plain ugly. And the writer guy who posted those metrics online said as much. Since that guy (I forget who) basically makes his living off of metrics analysis and the like, I'd expect him to know.

Of one thing I am certain...

Florence has played far more man-to-man coverage than Williams has. If we are going to use a lot of man-to-man this season, Florence has a clear edge on the RCB job.

As for moving Williams to Safety, i believe it to be foolish, UNLESS Williams is a better Safety than Sensabaugh AND Sensabaugh is a better NB than Williams.

You know, It's funny back on the day we lost that game, Everyone blamed Brian for playing piss-poor.

Now everyone looks back and says it's totally not his fault that Moss ran wild. Moss did have Williams for most of the game, Regardless of who he scored the TDs on.

Who do you feel more comfortable with in man coverage: Florence or Williams?

IMO, it's Williams. Florence's metrics last year were posted here awhile back. They weren't pretty. He also lost his job as the #2 mid-season.

I think it's better to keep Williams at CB and have Florence be the nickel. Sensabaugh is a solid player. If Sensabaugh goes down again, then it would make sense to move Williams to SS, but otherwise it's better to keep him put.

Grant tried to lay down a knockout blow when Moss caught the ball near him, and never laid a hand on him as a result. And Terry Cousin was the one who was in coverage in the first place.

IIRC, Santana Moss had a huge game against him in 2006, and even caught the game winning TD in OT against him. He is definitely a speedster.

That said, not many WRs, speedsters or otherwise, have really exploited him much, nor does he represent the weakness at RCB his predecessors were.

Furthermore, I think a point people have seemingly missed is that I think Williams and Florence (especially assuming if both remain CBs) will be changed up from RCB to nickel, depending on the matchup. I think if the coaches think Florence will match up better against a particular receiver than Williams, the coaches will be flexible enough to switch the alignment accordingly.

Traditionally, the Jaguars under JDR have not flipped their CBs. However, the team has done it at least once-in the 2006 game against Buffalo when Williams was out. JDR moved Rashean Mathis to the right side to cover Lee Evans.

Furthermore, the team has not had three solid CBs like we have now. It gives the team a lot of flexibility. If the team wants nickel caliber coverage out of the base defense, it has it. If the team decides to run Williams as the nickel with 2 safeties in a true nickel, it has the ability to do so.

Also, as I pointed out yesterday....if THIS was the plan all along (B Will to Safety) then why settle for Florence as the "upgrade" to Brian Williams RCB spot? Why not spend the extra money and get one of the best CB's in the league in Samuel, rather than paying only slightly less cash (in the scheme of things) for a CB like Florence, which is still essentially a "?".

Brian Williams is alot faster,stronger and physical than Knight, he's an upgrade, the reason why our secondary got better is for alot of reasons besides this obvious move, we just added speed rushers off the edge, and Reggie Nelson just got his first year under his belt, he'll be even better this season because he knows what to expect and he plays at an NFL speed level now, he's already got good range in the backfield, and to be honest, I think since Williams is more physical than what Knight was, and since he's a good cover CB, he just became a double-edged sword in every department, he can come up in run support and drop back into coverage and take the ball out of the air, we havent had a balanced SS like that in years, even with Darius, it always felt like Darius was favored as a run stuffer SS, but with Williams, your getting both, and Florence adds speed and youth to complement Mathis, think about it, you just put your two best coverage players on one side of the football field in Mathis and Williams, and then you have a good range and speedy FS in Nelson and another solid CB in Florence. Add in the experience of Durant and Ingram on top of Smith developing and getting better along with Mike Peterson's return on top of Harvey and Groves on the outside and you simply just made your secondary that much better. Im not even including the fact that Greg Williams has produced great defensive units in the NFL over the last six years as a reason to why our secondary just got better, but I should. :D

Some act as if he played like a Pro Bowler.

Far from it.

He actually wasn't good enough to earn a starting role. It only fell into his lap after injury.

Williams, on the other hand, did earn a starting role and is expected to have one again this year. If Knight was a worthwhile piece of the puzzle, he'd still be around. But if he was around, he be relegated to his prior backup role here. That's why he wasn't re-signed.

That wasn't my point. Randle El and Gonzales are speedsters. If you can't cover them deep, They're going to kill you. Personally, I don't think Brian Williams has the speed to cover guys like that, and why put a guy who isn't AS fast when you can put in a guy like Starks who is light-years faster?

Randle El and Gonzales put together wouldn't equal Reggie Wayne's talent. We're talking about a pernnial pro bowler playing alongside another HOF in marvin harrison. I think he was closer to "very well" than "just eh." He wasn't the best in coverage, but he was way more than I expected him to be as a run stuffer.
