Some of you are ridiculous!

wow, i give 40 much props, he comes with his A game in a correct way. not attacking but interpreting and informing.
-as for this discussion, i don't hate MJ, i just really want the the best for the team. the reason MJ is being discussed so heavily is b/c for once we have at least 7 legit WRs who could make the team contribute and produce. in recent seasons this has not been the case, where MJ could get by with his potential, talent and flashes alone. heck last seasons starting WRs were D. Northcutt and E. Wilford(nothing agaist these guys) but come on, if he couldn't see major playing time with those guys as starters, he was even benched for a little while, due to his coaches decision. its not like he's not a bright young man, he played QB in college which does require some smarts(even though he was an option QB in college). we now we have J. Porter, R. Williams, D. Northcutt, T. Williamson, M. Jones, J. Broussard, M. Walker and the UDFAs all vying for a spot on the roster. i hope we keep 6 WRs, but i understand it will probably be 5. like most i think the 4 spots are already taken by; Porter, Williams, Northcutt and Walker. then are at least 3 guys fighting it out for 1 or maybe 2 spots, Williamson, Jones and Broussard. one scenario is lets say they go 5 and either Williamson or Jones make the spot and the other is cut. that leaves us with Broussard, do u think we can sneak him onto the practice squad, i for one don't think he could make it. there are to many teams who don't have the depth we have, such as oh the Colts, tell me they wouldn't mind a player like him, great speed, good hands and decent route running. he is a Colts type receiver(quick, open and will avoid contact).

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team. Why is this patience only justified for MJ?

I am not sure what "Leftawich/Garrard argument you're talking about. With regards to your other question it was obvious to me that Leftawich was an egotistical player the had absolutely zero talent. Matt Jones has an abundance of talent that NO ONE denies. Again, I never attacked Leftawich until I was attacked for preferring to see Garrard get a legitimate shot. I also bit back when Garrard was attacked because it was clear to many of us that Garrard had much more talent.
As you can see I have attacked no other players in my defense of Matt Jones unlike the ex Leftawich lovers. You see, the shoe is on the other foot and I prefer to remain civil.
But don't you find it interesting that you attack others as "haters" if they want to see someone else get a "legitimate shot" at WR? BL was able to win games at QB. He was able to lead 4th qtr, last second drives as QB. In the clutch he came through. Now whether you personally, in a purely subjective view, didn't think BL had talent, his production proved otherwise. As for MJ, he has so underproduced that he couldn't retain a starting spot. Again, his agent used the media to note MJ would want a trade. The question isn't whether the talent is there. The question is whether the heart is there. MJ may have a ton more talent than Ernest Wilford but EW maximized what he had and made it into a bigger payday. The only thing I get from the defense of your position is that you like MJ so much you're willing to let the team suffer to ensure MJ gets as many chances as he needs to prove himself.

That you would characterize BL as a "zero talent" player provides evidence that you aren't objective. To note him as "egotistical" shows that it is personal. Since you have taken a personal tone to BL, how is it that when someone "hates" on MJ you call them out? It shouldn't matter whether BL is egotistical or not. That is a personal attack on BL's character\personality and that is exactly what you ostricize those who don't like MJ for. Simply because I or someone else wants MJ off the team because we don't like his work ethic or his attitude doesn't make us haters any more than you are a BL hater. You thought someone could play his position better. You felt his time was up to prove himself. There is no difference between that opinion and our opinion of MJ. Unless he manages to play at the level warranted of a 1st round draft pick, and that includes the practice field, he needs to be let go so someone else has a chance to prove themself.
:yeahthat:
That post deserves a slow clap.
I like the EW connection, it's very true.

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team. At one point he starts talking about his high expectations for Jerry Porter because he "makes great plays" He goes on talking about how he has expectations for other WRs to make great plays as well, and in particular he mentions Reggie Williams, Dennis Northcutt and Troy Williamson. I find this somewhat telling of how the early WR battle might be shaping up. Now Mike Walker does have a lock on his roster spot, but if they were to start the season today I'm thinking their WR line-up might look like...

Jerry Porter

Reggie Williams

Dennis Northcutt

Troy Williamson

Mike Walker

During camp, or possibly later during the season, I expect Walker to move up these charts. It wouldn't surprise me if one way or another he ends up in a starting role for the 2009 season.

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team. I think some people are moving too far toward Vick/Young etc in the running QB category, but it looks like the days of Drew Bledsoe type QBs(like Leftwich) are coming to a close.

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team. I think people tend to forget that JDR has praised MJ for his practicing ethic. It just seems when the lights go on on gamedays, he tends to disappear.

Everybody was yelling and screaming to get rid of Reggie Williams, and that turned out okay. I think another year with Todd Monkin (sp?) and more pressure because of a loaded depth chart he could finally show why he was a first round pick.

Another nugget people overlook is that Jerry Porter was a college QB (yes I realize he has a better work ethic and probably is a better athlete too) he just had the luxury of learning under Tim Brown and Jerry Rice for his first few years.

Matt Jones had Ken frickin' Anderson (A former QB/QB coach) teaching him his craft. That says something right there, to me

For the people earlier in the thread that said they hated him his rookie year, I was the exact opposite. He made some great plays as a rookie and I thought that was just the surface of his potential. Everybody loved him starting with that catch against Miami in the preseason game of '05.

I think getting rid of him now would be a mistake. Make him earn the roster spot and I think everything will work itself out. He pisses me off sometimes, but he is still a Jaguar and I will root for him no matter what.

Just my 2 cents

Go Jags!
I know that I am pulling for Matt Jones to make the 2008 final roster. Are you purposely avoiding my questions? I'm not being negative, just asking you to clarify your position.
1. I read one question in what you wrote. I think. Before last season, there were many questions regarding RW progression. To deny that means that you are a new Jaguar fan or just don't pay attention.
2. That was brought up in a list of items that COULD be a hindrance to Matts development from college QB to NFL receiver.
Was that the question you wanted answered. Please answer before Cunningham jumps in.
1. Are you being serious? My first post to you consists of multiple questions.

2. You didn't phrase that as something that could be a hindrance. Furthermore, what RW does has no bearing on MJ. If MJ plays better, MJ gets the nod and based on past experience MJ was given every opportunity to maintain a starting position.

My valid take
MJ hasn't improved since his 4 TDs last year is less than his season high of 5. Furthermore, RW too had to deal with a QB controversy and yet he managed to explode last year. In comparison, MJ hasn't progressed. When RW was benched he worked harder. When MJ was benched we heard requests for a trade.
Here is my first post. I have highlighted the multiple questions.
So if I have taken a hit during a football game I am allowed a higher level of credibility? OK. Since I have many memories of being blind sided by a blocking fullback or TE let me add to this discussion. Your insistance that MJ was our 2nd leading TD WR is false as he was tied for that honor with DN. I'm still not sure why you fail to validate MJ's demotion by JDR. Is that agenda driven or production driven? It is well documented that RW works harder than MJ and that work paid off in RW having a fine season w\10 TDs and playing in every game save week 1.

Your argument, the "wait and see" argument, is fine and fair, however by offering up the roster spot you take it away from someone else. If my option is to sign a DE or DT or OT that has potential and that means cutting someone who do I look to? The player that underperforms and lacks a respected work ethic. Coaches note it, players note it and yet you would have the team continue to work with "Jesus Jones" in order to maximize that potential. What an utterly ridiculous and counter-productive position to take from, at the very least, a business stand point.

I pay to be entertained by this team, and hence my money is a component of his salary. If he isn't performing I don't want my dollars in his pocket. As a human being I would love for this kid to show what we all hoped he would.

Lastly, regarding you're "Leftwich\Garrard" argument, why is it that you weren't willing to allow more time for Byron to develop? Why is this patience only justified for MJ?

Oh, good. Since you're back, maybe you can answer the questions that 40 asked you. ...decline? You still there?

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team. Some of you are ridiculous!
jagabc6893 (5/10/2008)

Stigma (5/10/2008)
In my mind, Matt Jones just may be the most talented WR on the Jags roster. I think that his best spot is to be a slot WR with Jerry Porter and Reggie Williams / Mike Walker as the two outside WRs. I think that Matt Jones can split the Safeties better than any WR on the roster and is best able to make more big plays down the center of the field. In fact I believe his presence in the slot would give the two outside guys more opportunities to make catches, because he will draw more interest from the Safeties who fear his deep speed.

I noticed that Matt Jones has dropped his playing weight from 238 Lbs as a rookie to 218 lbs now. Losing 20 pounds on his 6'6" frame tells me that perhaps he has rededicated himself to his craft.

I beleive that if JDR did not want him on his roster Matt Jones would not be on this roster. I hear everybody on this board badmouth Matt Jones, but I don't hear it from JDR nor Shack.

In my mind the Jags are a better team if Matt Jones can pull his game together and because I am a HOMER, I hope that Matt Jones does just that.

I think that the 5th WR spot will come down to Troy Williamson versus Dennis Northcutt. If Williamson can show more consistency with his hands on the deep fly patterns, then he will win the competition hands down.
How could Matt Jones play the slot? Doesn't the slot WR have to go over the middle a lot and be quick? Matt Jones is not quick and healready avioded contact before he lost weight. Now that he is lighter, I doubt he will be wanting to go across the middle much. They plan to play him outside.
Ideally that is what you want, but you can also put him in the slot because he won't have press coverage in the slot from the nickel corner or linebacker. You could drag Williams across the middle, etc.

RE: I'm rooting for the best WR to make the team.
