I read one reason Del Rio hired Tice was they played together at Minnesota. Later I learned Sean Salisbury played with him at Kansas City. The last thing I heard about JDR playing linebacker was he went to the Pro Bowl during an 11-year career. What number did he wear? Which linebacker position did he play? How long did he play on each team? Was he better against the pass or run? I know none of that helps Jack coach Sunday against the Bengals, but thought it would be neat to know what the head coach did when he was a player in the NFL.

We plan on launching a new message board tomorrow sometime between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. When this process begins the old board will be shutdown so we can move accounts & posts to the new board.

The following is provided to answer some of the questions which will arise.

1) The new board will contain a forum entitled “New Forum Comments” which will remain on the board for a two week period. This forum is intended to help you and us with the transition to the new board. Constructive comments and suggestions concerning the new board are to go here only. Suggestions / comments placed in other forums will not be moved, nor read, but rather deleted.

2) Logging into the new board – sign in using your username and password just as you would with the existing board.

3) Signatures – Signatures will be transferred to the new board. A few sigs may not work when transferred.

4) Avatars - Will not come over to the new board, so save yours if you would like to use it on new board.

5) Forums - The board will include the following forums:

a. The Jaguars – same content as the existing board

b. AFC South – same content as existing board

c. NFL @Large - Same content with additional expectation that Free Agency is also discussed here

d. College Football – A new forum dedicated to the discussion of college football and the NFL Draft

e. Tailgate Zone – A place for fans to discuss their tailgate plans, share tailgate setups/recipes, and talk about their gameday, or where they plan to watch the game.

f. Jaguars Ticketing – same content as on existing board. We will be making a concerted effort to ensure that your ticketing questions are answered in a prompt manner by members of the Ticket Office.

g. Gameday Experience – Modification of old forum. This redirects you to the ‘My Experience’ portion of Jaguars.com so you may ask questions and voice concerns pertaining to your gameday experience.

h. Jaguars.com - Same content as existing board, your comments and concerns regarding jaguars.com or the message forums (after the ‘New Forum Comments” is deleted)

6) Banned Members Appeals - This forum will appear only if you have been suspended or banned. This is the only place to appeal a suspension or banishment. Only board admins have additional access to this forum. Only they will make a final determination on appeals for reinstatement.

7) The Sideline --This board will be a football only board. Hence, “The Sideline” is gone and will not be reintroduced. Non- Football threads (other than those in the Feedback area )will be deleted when noticed by mods or admins and warnings will be issued for posting same.

8) Warnings – Members will typically receive five warnings before they are suspended or banned from the board. We reserve the right, however, to suspend or ban your account without notice should the violation be severe enough.

9) Trolls – Trollish behavior includes the disruption of the board by means of meaningless posts, profanity, spamming the board, etc. A troll IS NOT a fan of the opposing team who expresses their opinion of a recent or upcoming game.

10) Spamming the board – Bumping posts, replying to one’s own response, and extremely short responses that add little to the topic are considered spamming and subject to warnings from the mods.

11) Board Dicipline - Occasionally we run into the unfortunate situation where we have to suspend members for poor conduct on the message board. A member who breaks the rules outlined above is subject to the following disciplinary action:

a. First through fourth offenses : Warning

b. Fifth offense – Suspension or Permanent ban

Egregious violations may result in temporary suspension which will be reviewed by the administrators for potential permanent banishment.

12) Clean Slate – All members, less those currently banned, will start out on the new board with no warnings. Formal warnings for starting non-football threads will not be issued during the first week of operation, however, these threads will be immediately deleted and you will receive PM warnings. Should a mod determine you are knowingly and purposefully posting non-football threads you will be suspended.

13) Off-topic Posts- Will not be tolerated and will be subject to warnings.

14) Ignore feature – This is an included function of the board so you may choose to ignore any poster who bothers you, less the mods and admins. You may also chose to not see sigs.

15) Quoting posts – Many have complained in the past about this and we have limited the number of posts that can be quoted to four.

16) Revised COC - The COC has been revised and will be pinned to each Forum. Please familiarize yourself with it. By logging into the the new board, old members are bound to its terms and conditions.

17) Blogs – Official Jaguars blogs may be accessed from the message board. We may, in the future enable user blogs, either selectively or en masse.

18) Gallery – We are also moving our picture gallery to the Forum. Again, for the time being this is an Official gallery only.

3 Biggest Disappointments/3 Biggest Performers So Far

It's been a disappointing season so far but I was thinking about who's done well and who's been the biggest disappointment so far this season. Here are my choices:

Best Performers:

1) Matt Jones. Although he hasn't scored much, he's stepped up his play considerable in a year where he was in danger of being cut.

2) David Garrard. He's carrying the offense with the ground game struggling.

3) Khalif Barnes. I think he's played well despite a patchwork offensive line.

Biggest Disappointments:

This is much tougher because there's a lot of candidates here. I can't really pick Mojo or Fred because the running lanes aren't there for them to run.

1) Rob Meier. I didn't think losing Stroud would be a very big deal between Meier and McDaniel but boy was I wrong. Granted, Strould didn't do much for us the last couple of years between his injuries and suspension. However, the D line just isn't the same and Meier seems non-existent most of the time.

2) Reggie Williams. Still a great blocker but the guy simply hasn't produced in a contract year.

3) Justin Durant. The biggest problem on defense is a complete lack of playmakers. Where's the big play? How about a sack, strip and fumble recovery? Something, anything!

What is going on.. 60 mill on the bench????

ok.. i can see porter sitting, he was hurt, and hasnt showed anything since being injured... but what on earth is going on with florence.... Has anyone seen him do bad? blow coverages? get beat? I know i havent... i havent seen him getting interceptions, but i havent seen him play bad at all...

now we are going to move another 30 mill to the bench... and move williams, who is EXCELLING at safety and in the slot to CB... and move the inferior player in sensabaugh to full time SS?????

did anyone notice this last game? guess what happened when florence came in on the nickel package? florence would go to the outside CB spot, and williams would go to the Nickel...

so let me get this strait, hes not good enough to play CB on the outside on base, but in nickel he's better on the outside than williams??? so he's better on the outside in nickel, but not in base...

WHAT ON EARTH.... is this team imploding?? they are seeming to make STUPID decisions... the front office is dealing out all this money to then bench them??

florence has done nothing to be demoted...

basically... who would you rather have on the field... sensabaugh or florence... the team feels sensabaugh is the better option... what games are they watching...

this is ridiculous... 60 mill on the bench... TMD... im about as close as you can get to wanting a whole new FO

It will probably be atleast 10-6 to get into the AFC wild card, we need a bunch of wins fast

Move Reggie Nelson to CB?

I am not sure if this will work this year, but it is something they should consider next year. Reggie Nelson and Rashean Mathis would easily shut down the top to WR's of opposing teams if he switched to CB. Currently at FS he is having difficulty understanding what is expected of him, he is a ball hawk and sometimes doesnt play the coverage as he is supposed to which leaves an opposing receiver/tight end wide open. Matt Ryan burned him in the preseason, Derek Anderson burned him Sunday on the 4th down play and I think he would be much better with being a CB locked into man to man coverage.

CB- Rashean Mathis, Reggie Nelson

FS- Brian Williams

SS- Sensabaugh, or draft prospect

Seems as if they targeted the Jags game to try to gather some morale. So lets not let that happen.

the last few weeks he has been solid, playing well enough to win...i just read the clip from Vic's article on the home page

so far on the season these are Garrard's key stats:

Completion % = 65.3% - [u]this isnt too bad, its above average[/u]

Touchdowns = 6 - [u]not too good[/u]

Interceptions = 4 - [u]doesn't look good compared to the TDs, but he hasn't thrown any in the last 3 games[/u]

Sack = 18 - [u]thats an average of 2.25 per game, not very good but he is behind a bad line[/u]

Rushing Yards/AVG = 161/4.4 - [u]this isnt too bad, he has made big play runs when we need them, 59 yarder Sunday and the tying TD against the texans

I still have faith in the Jags Defense even though it's bad but I think they should really and I mean REALLY go after Nnamdi Asomugha since he is a Free Agent after this season. I still think Florence is a solid #2 corner but we can't pass a guy like Asomugha up. Our secondary could end up being nasty if you look at the line up.

Just look at that! The Jags secondary could easily be the greatest secondary of all time. Opposing offenses wouldn't even be able to throw the ball, they'd have to run every play lol. Add in Harvey and Groves having a year under their belt and if the pass rush is vastly improved it would be even better.

Anyone think we can get him for an Asante Samuel kind of deal?

Or maybe he would come to the 2009 Super Bowl Champions for less....The Jaguars :cool:

In scanning the globe as I do daily it occured to my our societys obsession with the Nick Name. I feel like in small doses and when appropriate, Nick Names can be catchy and Fantastic Marketing tools....

More often then not IMHO we give Nick Names because were just too darn lazy to say someones entire name...

I know many of you will scoff at the nature of this thread, but it was another thread on this very message board that got me thinking this way.. I believed it referred to or prized free agent DB...

"D-FLO" so what exactly does D-FLow Mean?

He got beat so bad Last Sunday Stallworth Left His Jock on D-FLO
If he dont improve his health quickly he may be reduced to cleaning D-FLO in the lockeroom.

I was just reading the article in the paper about the Jags facing the Bengals and the Lions the next two weeks. I actually found myself excited that we are facing two winless teams. That is just SAD. This team has gone from having Super Bowl hopes to being almost giddy that we are fortunate enough to face two very sorry teams in the next two weeks. Injuries and bad luck have reduced this a talented team and it's fans to a state of "crossing fingers" and "hoping for the best." Shouldn't be happening. The Colts are 3-4 and we should be running away with the division. Just getting things off my chest. GO JAGS!!

This season has been such a roller coaster ride, the inconsistency has been maddeining. When i speak to those who are not jag fans, which by the way is most everyone here, i tell them "listen, i am all out of excuses" or "dude! i dont know what to say". This was a team poised for a Super Bowl run at the beginning of the year, now i question the likelyhood of finishing better than 8-8.

What does one need when he begins to lose his faith, a heroe, thats what! Someone who laughs in the face of danger, and larger men. Someone who is fast, at least fast enough to outrun Warren Sapp.Someone who can be a confidant, much like Me & Bobby McGee Someone strong who loves his veggies. What i need is "the smartest man alive" are you out there my heroe?? Come to my resuce, and save me, and all of us from the dark could of dispair that hangs over "the jack" and reaches thousands of miles to jag fans everywhere. This aggression will not stand.

Is Vic a little too protective/biased of David Garrard's play?

How many passing yards will the Jags give up against the Bengals?

In all four games that Fitzpatrick has started, his passing yardage has been in the 150-199 yard range. So just imagine how embarrassing it would be for the Jags to give up more than or even just around 300 yards. Win or lose, I think that if our defense gives up that type of yardage, then we would be done for the season.

Hey,

To start with, Palmer is out and that means things couldn’t be any better for us. The Bengals are a team that can’t stop the run and neither stop the passing game. We have to worry about varying the plays and they will just drown alone in their weakness in both aspects.

Defensively we also have, lets face it, a piece of cake game. Any pass rush works against them, both Ryan and Palmer are sacked all the time, that’s that time for Groves and Harvey. Ryan isn’t great, far from that, in 4 games he has thrown 5 interceptions, but we need to take care of Houshmandzadeh, he’s the target and is their best player. Knowing about Ryan limitations, they try to run a lot. Are they good? No. Perry, their best RB, can’t simply run the football.

Even with our limitation this season, we are much better than that and I don’t think this game is gonna be a real problem for us, at least it shouldn’t.

What are your thoughts?

What the Jags need to change to win in 2009

First of all, I understand that this season isn't over. I've just been doing a lot of thinking the last 2 days and just talking here. Second, I also know my opinion is nothing special, but I just keep seeing all these threads bout what needs to change and it got me thinking.

What would I change? Nothing. Yes, nothing. I truly think that a lot of the Jags struggles of late has come from too much change.

Coaches - 3rd offensive coordinator in 5 years. Although it was unavaidable, a new defensive coordinator. Lets let these guys have a few years in a row to build relationships with these players. Let them get a feel for what their players can do. Let the players get some confidence in their coordinators. And Jack Del Rio needs let these guys coach and keep his hand out. He has to understand that these guys are experts and he has to trust them. Too many times he handcuffs both sides of the ball.

Leadership - Every year we lose a veteran who is a vocal leader and a locker room faorite. You don't think those things matter? Think about your job. Imagine if every time you got to know someone and really liked working with them, they got fired.
*Stroud - I know the coaching staff had some issues with Stroud. They have to swallow their egos here. Instead of trading him off, they should have looked at how much this team feeded off Marcus' attitude and leadership. I'm sure they could have sat down and worked something out.
*Mike Peterson - I an underdtand why they are timid in not giving him a contract extention, but not naming this guy a captain really got under the other players' skin. They showed how they felt by voting him team captain themselves.

Free agency - Lageman hinted at it after the game that he feels that the chemistry of this team might have got messed up. We went from a blue collar hard working team where everyone and I mean everyone truly liked one another to a locker room all looking around at one another. I know losing only perpetuates this, and I know these guys are Pros and need to just suck it up, but I think it really got to some of these guys. Again, I use the work analogy. Imagine at work they bring in a guy next to you and pay him way more than you even though you have more experience, work harder, and might even be better.

Draft - Although I like some of our draft picks, that's not the point. Too many years we are drafting a guy to start. Good teams just don't do that. We need to get back to drafting the best player available and having them sit for a year or at least half the year. For example, don't let Deion Grant walk before we have Reggie Nelson. We just need to stop leaving big gaping holes on our team and having to fill them in the draft.

In closing, I just feel like we have the players. We have the coaches. We just need to let these guys ALL play togther and coach together for a couple years in a row. Stop all the change every year. Too much change every single year is what is holding this team back. Let them build some comradery with and learn to trust one another.

Injury impact question

I was thinking about the injury situation, not only on the team, but throughout the league, and I was wondering which injury is the most devastating to the different types of teams. If you are Indianapolis, is it more damaging to you to lose Manning than it is to Jacksonville to lose it's interior Offensive Line?

For instance, teams such as New England, Indianapolis, and to an extent Philadelphia run their Offense through the Quarterback. The argument can be made that the entire teams philosophy of how the want to win games go through the QB as well for Philadelphia and Indianapolis seeing as how they are pressure heavy schemes. Philadelphia with its myriad of blitz packages and Indianapolis with its fast and light Defensive Ends, but that is not really germane to this conversation. Essentially, good play from the Quarterback is required for team success. Any injury that requires replacement is probably catastrophic to the teams chances.

Other teams depend on their Quarterback for their success, but more out of necessity than design. Pittsburgh simply can't generate a run game without Willie Parker so Roethlisberger is asked to basically carry the team on his back. Seriously, what do you think Pittsburgh's record would be if Ben wasn't there?

Now teams like Tennessee and Jacksonville, they run their Offense through the Running Game, and it has been stated over and over, that it all starts up front. If the running lanes are not opened, then the running game is essentially invisible, and the entire gameplan changes. You have to rely on what is not your strength.

It is watching the jaguars beat Pittsburgh at home in December.

The way this team has been plagued by injuries and bad play one can only point the finger at one person, Maurice Jones-Drew. Maurice did a Madden commercial and caught the Madden Curse. That's the only way to explain it.

Practice Squad OT Andrew Carnahan signed a 2 year contract with the Chiefs opening up a spot on the Practice Squad. This opening will most likely mean that CB Isaiah Gardner will be re-signed to the Practice Squad after being waived from the active roster for Chad Nkang this past Saturday.

Anyone think that bringing in Gregg Williams as DC was a mistake?

We all know that Gregg Williams had a rep for being an aggressive DC who brought a lot of heat. He was highly regarded for his ability to do this. The Jags ran a base Cover 2 for all these years before Williams came over.

Question is, what type of scheme has this defense been using primarily this year? Still the Cover 2 base with some blitzes mixed in or a good mixture of Cover 2 and Cover 1 (blitz)? If it's the latter, do you guys think that we got too cute in the process in that we didn't try to do one thing well (Cover 2) but tried to do too many things well (Cover 2 and blitz schemes) and we are paying for it with a lack of execution? Or is it just a lack of personnel? Do you guys think it would've been better to just bring in another Cover 2 guy in hindsight?

Sorry if this has been discussed to death as i'm sure it has been but i have not been checking out this board at all of late.

I've been seeing alot of incorrect or illogical arguments being propogated as a result of panicking and trying to play the blame game. These are just a few, but I might add more by way of my own thinking or reminders from posters here.

Myth: "We need grady Jackson back, hes teh awesome and will produce double teamz!!11"

Fact: Grady Jackson isn't really doing anything in Atlanta at all. He only has one sack and 11 tackles, and a pass defended. In comparison, John Henderson has 1 sack, 18 tackles, and a pass defended. Rob Meier has 1 sack also, and seven tackles. So...do you still want Grady Jackson? Because it would honestly be a wash. You could say it's the intangibles such as forcing double teams that makes Jackson valuable, but then you'd have to apply that argument to Henderson too.

Myth: "Marcus Stroud is a beast over in Buffalo right now! This FO is stupid for trading him!11"

Fact: Anyone with two eyes and even simple football knowledge could see Stroud was getting there in age and declining in his play. But many claim he's dominating in Buffalo and often use deceptive statements such as "he's commanding double teams and this causes the D-Line to get more sacks" or "he's leading the team in sacks." Well, let's take a look at the stats. Stroud has only two sacks, and has 14 solo tackles. He's defended four passes also. We've already examined our DT's stats above, so can you really say he's doing a whole lot better than Big John right now? As for the theory he is galvanizing the D-Line, in Buffalo they have 12 sacks and 8 forced fumbles. In comparison, the Jags have 9 sacks and 7 forced fumbles. Buffalo isn't doing much better.

Myth: "Gregg Williams is horrible" or "Gregg Williams ran the Redskins D into the ground and that's why he was let go so easily" or "Gregg Williams defenses sucked at Buffalo."

Fact: Let's examine the second and third statements first, respectively.

Gregg Williams, for those who didn't bother to examine, was not actually the D-Coordinator at Washington, but he did have clout with the defense of course. In the four years Williams served as assistant HC in Washington, the defenses finished 3rd, 9th, 31st, and 8th. That's an overall average of 12.75. Ignoring the 2006 season which was bad overall for the Redskins, Williams did good work there. To add perspective to that, the Redskins had finished 25th in 2003. We can not say for certain that Williams was responsible for this turnaround (especially seeing Gibbs also entered the scene in 2004), but how can anyone say he's "horrible" at coaching defense?

Williams also was the defensive coordinator for the very impressive 1999 and 2000 Tennesee Titans.

As to the third statement, true, Williams tenure as head coach at the Bills wasn't good, but if you scratch beneath the surface, Williams did big things with that defense. He took over a defense that ranked 21st in 2001, and took it to 15th in 2002, than to an impressive 2nd in his final year in 2003. It's his offense really that was the problem. Anyway, this leads to my final point.

Williams simply isn't responsible for our defensive problems right now. Simply put, Del Rio has more clout with the defense IMO, and Williams simply does not have the personnel to run an attack style defense; it's players, not plays. I know that is hard for those Madden 2009 addicts to understand, but the players determine if the schemes will succeed, not how creative the actual scheme is itself. Is it really just a coincidence that wherever Gregg Williams was, the defense was always ranked high and performed well for the most part?

Those are just three statements that are myths being propogated in an attempt to point fingers or criticize the FO unfairly. ;)
