Your thread makes zero sense, because I can guarantee you even if the Jags didn't make the trades they still wouldn't have taken any of the picks you just listed.

Every team has their own draft board of players that fit THEIR SYSTEM. So it's almost impossible to just list the players that were taken in those slots and say "gee glad we didn't get them".......Like Duane Brown, no sh*t he would of been a bad pick for y'all.....do y'all run the Gibbs zone scheme, I think not, but we do so he's a natural fit here, again with the "every team has their own draft board".

I can tell you this though, the first round of this draft wasn't very top heavy and the talent level wasn't that much more elite than the middle rounds......but the middle rounds of this draft were very deep at multiple positions and there were a ton of talented players that could of helped and fit in your system......to act like there wasn't is to admit you have no faith in your FO's ability to evaluate and find talent in one of the deepest drafts (from rounds 2-5) in a few years.

I'm not trying to say that y'all had a bad draft or anything.......I'm just saying your thread makes absolutely zero sense, because it's entirely based on players your FO probably never even had on their board in the first place.[/quote]

I agree. Lawrence Jackson, Phillip Merling and Calias Campbell were all still available at pick 26. They could have drafted one of them instead of Harvey and drafted Brown in the second round if Groves had been gone. I mean I have nothing against Harvey or Groves, I think they are fine players and fine picks, but all the trading up stuff is hype as far as I am concerned.

Even if the Texans would've drafted, Quinn (which they wouldn've and never even thought of......Texans were tired of developing a quarterback----> see David Carr) They still would not have taken Mendenhall (Denver does not take first round runningback......and neither do we) Again we passed on Bush and now we passed on Mendenhall, watch what Steve Slaton (who ran in a zone scheme offense) will do in this offense.

You also can't speak on players "we would've taken in we didn't do this" and then say "and you can't tell me these players are better than what the have now"

Again.....you don't know who the heck Houston would've taken with that second round pick. We actually had bigger needs over LT in that draft (look at our 3rd round pick......a project WR with upside, because at that time we had no #2 WR)

Or how about this.....at that time a #2 CB was a bigger need, if we blew that #2 pick on a CB we wouldn't have Fred Bennett right now (who we got in the fourth) and we'd be up sh*t creak without a paddle, because he's now our #1 corner and was arguably the best rookie CB last year.

Houston's depth also wasn't affected by the trade.......the traded two #2's, but picked up a QB. So we got a pretty **** good player for one of those 2nds, so that means the trade only really cost us one #2 and when your FO is constantly plucking mid round steals out of the draft the last couple of years....that #2 is easy to absorb.

Another thing, I don't think Brady Quinn is all that good and I really didn't like him in college.....infact before the Schaub trade went down my biggest nightmare was that Houston was going to draft him, the guy never won a big game in his entire college career and I just feared David Carr part 2.....I'm so glad he is not on this team. I'd rather take Amobi Okoye (who as a 20 year old put up a hellava season for a DT) who has the skill of a young Sapp, than another pretty boy QB with good measurables, but never was able to win the big game. So yeah, I could easily sit here and tell you I'd rather have Schaub (who we don't have to wait 3 years on), Okoye (who not even done growing yet, and isn't even begun to reach his potential), Brown (who when you look at his measureables is every bit the athlete Ugoh is, and Steve Slaton than the players you listed above.

I'll read your stuff Carr Bombed....

I look at it this way. I find it hard to believe that anyone that is not a scout or part of the scouting process or being a coach in the organazation is able to make an evaluation better than those guys. I don't know much about the kid, his measurables, athleticism etc... What I do know is Texans QB's get sacked a lot. There RB's do not get huge holes on a regular basis. Their OL Coach brought the leg breaking cut blocking scheme with him (I think cut blocking should be banned but if the league says it is legal than all is fair game.) To sum up, IMO all that means is the Texans need help at OL and I think that to be a pretty fair assesment over there in Houston. Now if a great OL coach that is known for picking out those players perfectly suited for his zone scheme and is also known for molding them into good if not great players in his scheme, who can argue with the pick? If he was targeted specificaly than in my eyes the pick is not a reach. It meshes a need for the Texans OL with a Quality Player that was Targeted by the team. The only way I can justify arguing against the pick is that maybe corner or RB may have yeilded more value but in the end I think they made the right pick considering what they needed and as Carr Bombed said, they wanted him. It's hard to argue with that draft strategey. there is not much better than getting who you really wanted at a position you know you want and need to upgrade at. We wanted and needed Harvey and got him. Need plus want = happy fans. OL is not an exciting pick but if he gives Shaub an extra .3-.5 in the pocket D's will get picked apart and AJ is gonna have a monster year.

I did not think Shaub was going to be much of an improvment but he proved me and a lot of other people wrong. Excellent trade in Hindsight IMO

Oh and that monster of a kid Okoye, dude he is a beast. The kid's motor never shuts down. Okoye and Williams are going to make for a an excellent tandem at DT and DL for a very, very long time.

You really don't get the simple fact that all three USC linebackers are going in the first round of the draft... Thomas Williams just got caught in a numbers game, he's from that area and after being one of the best prospects out of High School he signed with USC, the team he's loved all his life. He didn't care about not being a starter.. staying close to home was more important to him.

And yes, he was one of the best LBs coming out of HS.. he could have played anywhere, and started, but chose USC even if he was the 4th LB.

I bet you haven't even seen him play once, either. Just try not to make rash decisions about a player until you at least see him perform in pre-season.[/quote]

Sorry buddy, but I stopped listening to MB GMs a long time ago (especially ones that don't have a glimpse of what the hell they're talking about.) Yep, your evaluation of talent holds so much more weight than a HOF line coach.....keep dreaming.

This post reminds me of all the idiots on this board that bashed us over picking Mario Williams and the ones who said Tony Ugoh was going to flop last year as well.

Again I hate to tell you this, but Alex Gibbs DID target Duane Brown in the draft..(they were ready to take him at 18, but gambled on getting more picks in a trade down)....he's the prototypical zone tackle (converted TE that's a supurb athlete).......do you notice how our RT is also a converted TE with athleticism (how did that work out?) Alex Gibbs takes these tackles that have the athleticism to run his system, but are conceived to be "projects" and molds them into probowl caliber players.

Look man, there are myriad examples that when it comes to assessing and evaluating future talent, you might not quite be up to speed for this particular forum. What in the world did you read (because I have a suspicion you have not watched either of these players actually play) about these two that makes you think this? Or is it because one was 'ranked' higher than the other on a few websites? I have been wrong before and there is a chance that I am wrong now, but at least I know why I make my argument.

I think that your talents might be better utilized over on the other sections where people just like to 'slam' one another and ridicule opinions.

Why don't you leave the actual football talk for those that want to talk football?

I think you may be going a little overboard to denigrate this guy. I think that most will agree that Houston may have reached a bit on this guy at Pick 26, but in my opinion he was a solid mid-Rd 2 selection going into the draft and Houston did not reach too much in taking him.

Given the way teams were reaching for OT's in this draft, I think it is easy to understand why the Texans' may have reached on Duane Brown. Still he fills a need and if their coaching staff likes him, then all anyone can do is wait and see how he pans out.

In my opinion the Texan's draft was greatly impacted by their trade last season for Matt Schaub. Giving away two Rd 2 picks cost them valuable depth. It is even a bit questionable whether or not they would not have been better off taking Brady Quinn with their Rd 1 pick and keeping those two Rd 2 picks. If the Texans had drafted Brady Quinn in Rd 1 of the 2007 draft and not traded for Matt Schaub, then they could have taken Tony Ugoh - OLT - Arkansas with their Rd 2 pick. With Brady Quinn and Tony Ugoh manning the QB and OLT positions, the Texans could have drafted Rashard Mendenhall at Pick 19 in Rd 1 of the 2008 draft instead of trading back with the Ravens. In Rd 2 the Texans could have taken Calais Campbell and put him opposite Mario Williams at the LDE spot, or at least slipped him inside to the DT spot.

No one can tell me that the Texans would not have been better off with Quinn, Ugoh, Mendenhall and Campbell instead of Okoye, Schaub and Brown. But hey, the league is saying that the Jags overpaid for Derrick Harvey, so what are you going to do?

Brown is an OK athlete. You're giving him WAY too much credit for his workouts because you need something to give you the tiniest bit of hope. He was not the fastest OT. He was not the quickest OT. I am not suggesting that Phillip Merling would be a better LDE than Derrick Harvey. What I said was that Phillip Merling is a LDE and not a RDE. He is not the pass rusher that Derrick Harvey is nor most likely ever will be. Still that does not change the fact that Phillip Merling's best position in the NFL is going to be at the LDE position.

Hindsight is always 20/20 and knowing how things are going to fall out is always a great help. Here are my picks in the draft, assuming the Jags did not trade up for Derrick Harvey.

Rd 1(26): Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson

I still think that he would have been helpful as a LDE candidate.

Rd 2(52): Quentin Groves - DE - Auburn

I see no reason why the Jags would not have pulled the trigger on this trade no matter what. Now the Jags have a RDE to pair with a LDE.

Rd 3(71): DaJuan Morgan - S - North Carolina State

Jags would have more depth at both Safety spots with this selection.

Rd 3(89): Dre Moore - DT - Maryland

Jags could have grabbed a DT to replace Marcus Stroud and been hailed as geniuses for the selection.

Rd 4(125): Tony Hills - OT - Texas

Grabbing an OLT candidate would not have been a bad thing at this spot.

Rd 5(155): Roy Schuening - OG - Oregon State

More depth along the Offensive line would have been nice, especially with this player who I think offers nice value here.

Rd 5(158): Trae Williams - CB - South Florida

I stll think that this was one of the Jags best selections in this draft class.

Rd 7(213): Chauncey Washington - RB - USC

I was not a fan of Washington prior to his selection, but I can see the wisdom and value of his selection at this spot.

All in all, this would not have been a bad draft class. I am not sure that Merling has the same upside as Harvey. In fact I can see Harvey becoming to the Jags what Shaun Merriman has become to the Chargers. In the end, one would have to compare the selection of Merling, Morgan, Moore and Hills versus taking Harvey alone as to whether the trade down was a wise move or not. One thing is for certain, the Jags must have really liked Harvey to make such a deal.

26. DE Groves - Since Harris/Del Rio have arrived the Jags have selected the position/skill that the coaches identified as the greatest need. Even the year we were all saying OLB the coaching staff identified TE as the greatest need and took Lewis.

58. CB Wheatley - The Jags liked this guy.

71. DE Ellis - Another pass rusher.

89. S DeCoud

125. CB Williams

143. LB Williams

158. RB Washington

159. TE Santi

So for the premier pass rusher we traded DE Ellis, S DeCoud, and TE Santi.

I would make that trade. It was a good deal. Now our star of the draft just has to live up to his billing.

If so, had you seen him play in a game? Multiple games?

Same question regarding Tavares Gooden.

Just curious as your opinion seems to be so strong regarding him, so I assume you MUST have seen extensive tape on him and could break down exactly what your criticisms are.

My favorite player in the draft, and even I think this is about 2 Rounds too high for him. Tampa Bay has even stated that they drafted him to be a KR. That means he has to become Devin Hester in order to justify this. I like the potential of Q. Groves much, much more than I do this guy, and I think the world of D. Jackson.
