I think that this position has taken on the same status as CB when we had the Kenny Wright-Dewayne Washington-Veteran to be named later revolving door going.
I think that we are always going to have one position that gets addressed through patchwork FA, and it's just the Safety's turn.

maize n blue (5/9/2008)
QB - At some point we need to bring in a developmental guy with good physical tools and athleticism that can be a starter 4 years from now. I don't think Smith is that kid.

You never know, the Smith kid might be able to make it. But he is definitely going to have to fill out a little more. You can never have enough QB's on the roster to develop. If you're paying a guy like M. Shula, you might as well have him earn his money.

maize n blue (5/9/2008)
LB - We need to have 4 LB'ers capable of starting. Assuming Mike P. is gone, we'd need to bring a guy in.

Agreed, about the idea of 4 starting-caliber LB's on the roster. Right now we are pretty much there and if Iwuh comes around, we might have five by midseason. I think that this is the new strength of the team.

maize n blue (5/9/2008)
DE - How much does Spicer have left in the tank? How healthy is Hayward? Can Mincey or Wyche get it done?
RB - You're not going to fill the hole left by Fred Taylor wih one player. Mo Drew will need some help.

If Fred starts showing real signs of wearing down, will this be a position that we trade up for? We have had a stud at RB for so long now, and I really, really like the 2 RB Offense. The problem is that players like this don't have much of a shelf life to wait on a roster.

maize n blue (5/9/2008)
TE - I believe we will need to improve the overall dynamics of this group at some point. I'd be looking at guys that are more the hybrid WR/TE. 6'3" - 6'4" 245 pounds with good athleticism. More along the lines of an H-Back like Chris Cooley.
OL - I view Collier as a ORT. I don't see the athleticism I think you need for OLT. I'd like to see us bring in a more athletic lineman that has some versatility. The other thing to consider is the eventual replacement of Meester.

I would really like to see the team start developing a Center. I was drinking the D. Norman kool-aid there for a while, and while he is a good backup, the drop off from Meester to him is palpable. You can never have enough big guys.

RE: 2009 1st Round mock

In the pass happy AFC, no team can have enough pass rush DEs. Maybe two years from now we draft a developmental type guy. As far as DE, we just drafted two this year, so I don't see that being a need next yearl. I wonder if PacMan Jones gets reinstated the impact he'll make to that secondary? They never really replaced the CB they gave us last year in depth. I have a lot of questions about the Cowboys I don't think they'll win the Divison if the Giants can continue on with the level of play they finished in the Super Bowl. The Eagles won't play with an 8-8 record again this year, though they got a WR in the draft it wasn't the T.O. / Donte Stallworth player the fans & McNabb really demanded from the organization for this year. Especially with a staff of great veterans that is aging into retirement in a couple of years if not sooner. The Redskins are hopeless in my opinion. Same thing every year from them a bunch of hype turned into nothing, and they had a hall of fame coach now who do they have? I think the Cowboys will compete for 2nd place in the NFC East. That division is almost as hard as ours!
I hope we come in 30th place, or better!!!
Yes, I think the Cowboys will be that good this year. Even if Pacman doesn't make a big contribution this year, they've still improved. I also expect their offense to be as good as it was last season. My only real question is which Giants team will we see? Their 2007 Regular season or their 2007 Playoff team?

RE: 2009 1st Round mock

Do you think that the Jags could invest a late Rd 1 pick on a Center like this guy?

Name: "Right now he's leaning toward coming back, but he's just keeping his options open just in case," Gary Luigs said Friday night. "He's concentrating on the bowl game." Jonathan Luigs was this year's recipient of the Rimington Trophy, given to college football's top center. College players can complete forms that are submitted to an NFL advisory committee, which estimates where a player might be taken in the draft. Luigs, listed at 307 pounds and 6-foot-4 at the beginning of this season, redshirted his first season at Arkansas in 2004 after being recruited from Pulaski Academy at Little Rock, so he has another year of college eligibility left. "We're getting evaluated by the NFL to see where he might be projected to go in the draft -- and make a decision from there," Gary Luigs said. "He graduated this week, actually. ... The annual Rimington Trophy awards banquet will be held at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on January 12, 2008. "This is a tremendous eye opener for me especially when I look at the history of the trophy and the distinguished lists of winners. It is an honor to be mentioned in the same circle and even bigger honor to receive the trophy", said Jonathan Luigs.

2009 1st Round mock

I know it's WAY too early, but I thought I'd give it a shot:

2009 1st
