04/29/08 - A closer Look at the Jaguars picks: Round 7/213 -- Chauncey Washington, RB, 5-11, 215, Southern California - Washington didn't live up to the standards of other notable USC running backs, but in 31 games he gained 1,778 yards with 19 touchdowns. He's stocky, built along the lines of Jaguars' Maurice Jones-Drew who's had two productive seasons with the Jags. Washington is bigger and will be given plenty of opportunities to make the squad and be groomed as an eventual replacement for Jones-Drew who in the next couple of years will likely replace Fred Taylor as the team's featured back.

In compiling impressive results in the vertical jump (36 inches), broad jump (9'11") and bench press (18 reps at 225 pounds), Washington proved his athleticism is legitimate and not just speed-driven. In a couple hours of work, Washington may have improved his stock by two full rounds.

Here Robb Rang of NFLDraftScout.com ranks the 5 teams that had the best haul coming out of the 2008 draft. He also offers up his opinion on the ROY candidates...

-- Jacksonville Jaguars : Considering the Jaguars only used five selections, there is plenty of ammunition for those who wish to argue with my acknowledging their draft here. However, this is a club that seemed to be only a dynamic pass rusher away from emerging as a strong Super Bowl contender. Rather than build slowly through the draft, I applaud the Jaguars' aggressive trade from the 26th pick to the eighth pick to add such a pass rusher in Derrick Harvey. With John Henderson holding the point inside, Harvey should be able to capitalize on one-on-one blocking on the outside. Between he and second-round pick Quentin Groves, the Jaguars turned an obvious area of need into a legitimate team strength.

No. 2 -- ROOKIE OF THE YEAR FAVORITES:

-- Jonathan Stewart, RB, Carolina: The perception of many is that Stewart was brought in to be the bullish runner to offset starting back DeAngelo Williams. Considering that Carolina was at its most successful when it featured a legitimate power running attack, the opposite may be true -- with Stewart carrying the bulk of the workload and Williams operating as the change of pace weapon. Considering the additions the Panthers have made along the offensive line and at receiver, Stewart could be the centerpiece of a rejuvenated Carolina attack in 2008.

-- Derrick Harvey, DE, Jacksonville: As mentioned previously, I love the aggressiveness shown by the Jaguars in trading up to land Derrick Harvey. Possessing as good a burst off the snap as any pass rusher in the 2008 draft, the combination of Harvey and second-round selection Quentin Groves could give the Jaguars a dynamic 1-2 punch off the edge.

Todd McShay's comments following USC's Pro Day...

As well as other players performed, though, the most impressive numbers of the day came from RB Chauncey Washington, who who weighed 211 pounds at the combine and ran 4.35 and 4.42 on campus. Had he posted that 4.35 at the combine he would have ranked fourth among running backs. Washington's inability to stay academically eligible during the 2004 and 2005, though, is going still going to raise red flags for teams looking to draft a running back later in the draft. And it doesn't help that he spent his fair share of time in Carroll's doghouse, either.

However, there is a difference between academic smarts and football smarts and it is our understanding that Washington is a student of the game and a hard worker on the field. It's also worth pointing out that Carroll and the Trojans thought enough of him to make him the primary back during his senior season despite having one of the most talented running back stables in the country. The bottom line is that Washington is a talented back whose stock appears to be rising at exactly the right time.

to be honest i don't know why he or miller went undrafted. like vic sid, this was a wierd draft. okam played at texas had tremendous size and he slipped to i believe the fifth round. I know tht DT's generally are depressed to the later rounds and this year there wer two that carrei top then grades and then everyone else. I know that horrocks his last year had close to 50 tackles form DT and that is about what you want. 50 5 is pretty darn solid for a guy on the inside and he is good size and strength. he is one of those guys who makes a roster good and deep and dosn't cost anything. i share your enthusiasm buddy.

I agree that this years crop of Jax UDFA's is much more promising than last years.

Maybe that has a lot to do with the fact that we had more overall draft choices last year & this year we had less, which gave the Jags more opportunity to focus on targetting potential UDFA's.

The guy I am keeping a close eye on this offseason / camp is Isaiah Gardner. He has the speed, size and athleticism to play at this level and the tenacity and willingness to play a role in the run game at the safety spot.

I'm going out on a limb and calling the shot. Gardner will make this roster as a backup at FS and will be a stud on Special Teams.

I am not going to say that the guy is a sacred cow or anything, but i think that it would be hard to ocnvince Joe Decamillis that we are going to cut his best special teams player from a year ago. when you look ata guy like Nkang you look at him as a special teams ace. the actual position you call him shouldn't really factor into the numbers in my oppinion. if he is the one flying down the field and hitting the returner first and hard then i don't care if you can't him as a DE you take guys like that to battle with you. i think that Miles and williams have a shot at making the team as fellow teamers because of the inherent depth that we have at all positions. At linebacker we are lready 4 deep with starting caliber talent and williams can play all thre positions.

At safety i am not sure how sold the team is on jamal fudge or the new guy they got from the redskins.

to me there is no backup to reggie nelson on the football team and either garner or grant have an excellent chance of showing they can play that spot at this level behind a dynamic player like nelson because i think that the numbers at corner might be just too much witht he firepower we have and sensy coming off injury to keep williams in the rotation at corner.

I think that it will be interesting to see all the battles play out. the thing that i am most excited about is that we are stacking up insurance policies. williams could blow an acl in preseason, nelson could go down with an ankle. any time that you bring in a lot of young speed and athletacism to your secondary and take it all to camp you let competition pick the team and you still have young guys that can step in if there is an injury or in a class this deep at corner you might be able to sneak one or two of these guys onto the practice squad.

Horrocks in my oppinino could be a sleeper. you don't just wake up one morning and become a productive DT in the SEC. when you can find players like him, miller, grant, gardner, miles, and withersponn in UDFA it makes you look a lot smarter passing up on mid round picks to go get a derrick harvey and quentin Groves. we are worried right now about which UFA's we don't want to cut because they have too much upside. I am glad that we are have that kind of depth with the addition of two premier pass rushers in an aggresive draft day move.

Can you imagine if we got our two bookends for the next decade in one draft and found a couple of gems in FA that same weekend. The prospect is so awesome that TMD is actually posting in the positive. that should tell us a little about where this team is headed. I am very excited about the upcoming year and i really look forward to the season.

There are some real gems in our UDFA this year. I like this group much better than last year's group.

At TE both Bishop and Brown have a shot at making the team. The linemen Miller and Horrocks could also eventually find their way to the roster after a year on the practice squad. At QB Smith could actually make the team as the #3 QB. At WR one of these will make the practice squad just to be available in case of injury.

The area I am most keenly interested in though are the CB/S positions. Gardner, Grant, Myles, and Witherspoon all have a shot at making the team. Gardner, Grant, and Myles could actually make the team at the S position while Witherspoon could make it as a CB/KR guy. Their status will depend on the direction the team goes with Williams and Prioleau.

If Williams goes to S, then Moulton, who was on the practice squad last year, will be in a fight for the #4 CB position with Gardner and Grant. The coaches will debate the value of Witherspoon versus Starks, each having different strengths. And Myles will be in a battle with Nkang for the backup SS and special teams gunner.

Should be an interesting preseason.

By the end of this interview I understood why Conference USA player of the year and Tulsa quarterback, Paul Smith won the 2007 Wuerffel Trophy, presented to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with both athletic and academic achievement. I can say without hyperbole that he was by far the nicest and most respectful athlete out of the hundreds that I have interviewed in my young career. The Owasso, Oklahoma native established Conference USA single-season records for total offense, passing yards, and TD passes thrown. Smith also broke Tulsa program career and single-season records for passing, touchdown passes and total offense. Smith received ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-America second team merits and was named C-USA's Scholar Athlete of the Year for football. He was also the MVP of the 2005 Liberty Bowl and currently holds the NCAA record with 14 consecutive games passing for more than 300 yards. He recently married former TU soccer varsity letter winner Krista Barker. I spoke with him about football, faith, Lovie Smith, and just life in general.

Paul M. Banks: With all your on and off-the-field accomplishments, what’s been the overall highlight of your football career?

Paul Smith: All the individual stuff is neat, not only personally but for the team. Going to three bowl games in my three years as a starter provided a level of consistency. As the starter at the position most people consider the leader of the team. Tulsa has a great history as a program, but the last time they went to a bowl game three years in a row before this was in the 1940s.

Paul M. Banks: You won the award named after Danny Wuerffel; is he someone you look up to as a favorite player?

Paul Smith: Absolutely, he was someone I watched growing up. Being raised in a household with Christian values, my dad taught me to emulate him, not just in football, but in life. He won the national championship and a Heisman trophy, and you can say so many great things about him as a football player and more importantly as a person. Danny Wuerffel is definitely someone I want to emulate in my life.

Paul M. Banks: Do you have a favorite Bible passage, and does it inspire you in your football career?

Paul Smith: Proverbs 21: 31 “The horse is prepared for the day of battle, But victory belongs to the LORD.” Just helps me to remember that it’s all in the Lord’s hands for my life and everyone’s life. I do all I can to believe in him, in my faith, and it’s my foundation. My wife is the same; we each hold the Lord in that regard and we are blessed with our ability as athletes.

Paul M. Banks: You’re known for accomplishing just as much off the field as you do on it. The academic accomplishments and of course your service: President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on campus, numerous speaking engagements for FCA and other church-affiliated and youth events,

Paul Smith: I got involved in that in high school. In college I started playing the guitar at campus FCA, and it was a way to stay involved with my faith during the week. I can play the guitar at FCA every Tuesday night on campus. It’s tough to get to church sometimes when you’re out of town every weekend. But I stayed involved and the director named me the president.

Paul M. Banks: Have you had any interactions with the legends of Tulsa football, Lovie Smith and Steve Largent?

Paul Smith: I met Steve Largent and I spoke with Lovie Smith a couple weeks before the combine; he was in town for the hall of fame dinner. I’ve spoken with him there, on the phone and at the combine. Proud to be associated with him and I hope this relationship carries on to the next level.

Paul M. Banks: No matter what field you go into, always good to make connections.

Paul Smith: Doing that doesn’t help your ability to play the game and make plays on the football field, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.

Paul M. Banks: The scouts, what do they say about your main strengths?

Paul Smith: They’re hard to read; they don’t tell me much. They talk to my coach and they compliment me saying I find a way to win; so obviously that is what you look for in a quarterback. You gotta have someone at qb that knows how to find a way to win.

Paul M. Banks: Conversely, what are some of the things you think you need to work on the most?

Paul Smith: They gave me about as much negative feedback as they did positive. I entered my senior year at 195 pounds, and most people wanted to see me put some weight on and be more physical if I needed to be. I gained some muscle, about 15 pounds. I weighed in at the combine at 208; my goal was to be at 205 to show that I could put on weight if I needed to. So to have surpassed that goal certainly helps.

Paul M. Banks: Your faith, service and accomplishments all make you a role model to many; what’s the best advice you can give to those who look up to you?

Paul Smith: Never believe the critics. They will always say you’re this or that. You’re too short, too slow, too skinny to do something. You just keep proving them wrong and keep giving God the glory.

Paul M. Banks: Solid advice that applies to the field of sports writing too!

He is coachable and is the unquestioned leader of the team. Smith lacks the ideal size and the big arm to be an NFL starter. His overall mechanics need to be tweaked and he needs to work on his footwork. He made a smooth transition this season to the new hurry-up, no-huddle offense under the new head coach Todd Graham. Myles got himself up to 230. so he is now big enough to be a LB. obviously thats still a little on the smaller side, but its big enough for us. i know Ernie Sims is a freak but he finished 4th in the ENTIRE NFL in tackles and he measured 5-11, 230 at the combine. the same size as Myles was measured at.

My intention is not to take anything away from Chad Nkang, but Lamar Myles is much more athletic (fluid motion) and has much better coverage skills than Nkang. The comparison to Carnell Lake is quite a compliment, but a more realistic comparison may be Marlon McCree. The only edge that Nkang has over Myles is that he has an attack style mentality and is a sure tackler, which may give him the edge on special teams.

It is a shame that Myles was listed as a LB and not given the oppurtunity to show his skills in the Safety drills at the combine (not invited). The competition between these two players will be quite a battle in camp and preseason. If Brian Williams does not go to SS, then the edge goes to Lamar Myles for the SS#2 slot.

But the guy I can't believe is Paul Smith, QB, from Tulsa. How did he go undrafted? We could end up carrying 3 QB on the roster with Smith being the third.

There is no question that the Cincinnati Bengals will be looking to add some depth at the linebacker position during the NFL draft and could have the inside track to an incredible talent in Louisville LB Lamar Myles.

Myles is a player who has received little attention from teams as of late. However, the Bengals are one team with the 411 and could have their sights set on the hidden gem.

The 6-foot-0 220-pound junior linebacker declared himself eligible for the draft after receiving a fifth-round grade from the NFL advisory board and decided to jump ship. Myles thought the grade would be good enough to earn him an invite to the combine and under normal circumstances it would, but for whatever reason he was left off the list.

Myles' entry into the draft caught some people by surprise including his trainer Clif Marshall, who operates Ignition Athletes Performance Group in Mason Ohio.

"I knew Lamar had a great year, but I wasn't expecting him to come out," Marshall said. "The decision caught me off guard but we're glad to have him in the program. I know when he came out he thought hard and prayed about it. Lamar is a phenomenal athlete and will open some eyes at the school's pro day."

Marshall has a history with the linebacker that dates back to his days as assistant strength coach on the Cardinals' coaching staff when Myles was a freshman.

Marshall said he saw something in Myles back then and believes he has what it takes to be successful at the next level.

"I've been around the game long enough to know that Lamar will be on an active roster," Marshall said. "He will be productive on special-teams in his first year and he will make a great linebacker some day in the NFL."

Marshall has worked with the Bengals the past three off-seasons and was with the team full-time during the '05 and '06 season as their strength and conditioning coach. Marshall currently has 16 NFL prospects who are training at Ignition for the Combine and Pro Day workouts.

While NFL teams scramble to watch film on Myles, the Bengals are getting firsthand information from some of the team's players. Bengals LB David Pollack, who is acting as an assistant to Marshall and mentoring the prospects, and teammate LB Landon Johnson have put Myles through some rigorous linebacking drills during workouts. Word is that he has been impressive.

Freak-a-zoid

When it comes to getting his freak on in the weight room, Myles is no joke. He broke nearly every lifting record at Louisville. He's described as a genetic freak in the weight room. By no means is he just a workout warrior, but possesses some serious football skills. In other words he's got game.

Myles lead the Cardinals in tackles this season with 128 stops. The player who finished second on the list, Bobby Buchanan, had 54 tackles which is quite a disparity. Myles had an insane 22 tackles in the game against instate rival Kentucky.

For the time being, Myles is flying under the radar but you can expect for his name to be heard a lot in Bengals camp now that the word is out.

Big C's Scouting Report:

Myles is a very instinctive, aggressive, linebacker with excellent sideline-to-sideline speed. He's a ferocious hitter and sure-tackler. He played middle linebacker in college but will likely be moved to the outside position in the pros. Myles has a chiseled frame and plays the game like it's meant to be played. He has great change-of-direction and does a nice job dropping back into coverage. He is a quick study and goes about his business quietly. Myles has all the physical tools to play at the pro level, but NFL scouts are more interested in gauging his straight-line speed.

Look I am just like you. Draft weekend is like Christmas and the week afterward is like a continuation of the holiday.

I woke up this morning wanting to know who the Jags signed. When I found out who signed, I went and found the profiles, because just like you, I wanted to know more about these hidden gem players that the Jags uncovered.

The UDFA group is like buying a bag of rocks out west and getting home to find that included in your bag were a couple of gems that just need polishing.

Now the long wait until training camp and FBT's reports. Of course I will be out there with the faithful, but I almost feel like I am facing a journey through the desert waiting to find the oasis that will sustain me until the season begins again.

Clearly I am a Jags Junkie, so I am wondering if someone will start a 12 step program to effect a cure, or at least sustain my fix?

I remember what it used to feel like asa kid going to toys r us. i get that same feeling looking over these profiles.

how did washington slip to the 7th after his pro day?

how did michael grant, gardner, horrocks, and miller go throuhg the whole second day without getting drafted?

is this witherspoon kid a devin hester light.

i am glad that we are asking these questions. its a sin that we got that top end talent and this kind of back end value. i think that this adds a ton of depth to our secondary with the versatility of grant and gardner to play FS behind nelson.

just keep adding athletes and we will find wys to coach them. this is a little unreal. how do you get a starting linieman from vanderbilt and florida as undrafted FA's. drew miller started for a naitional championship team and put the bar up 34 times. that's huge value. horrocks started in the toughest confrence in college football. this kid from maryland has elite athletacism. this witherspoon kid is speed personified and can return kicks. this is great great value out of your UFA's. it is going to be an interesting offeseason watching these kids thoruhg ota's and such. i think that there is a lot of speed and athletacism behind the big name guys in this secondary and we have some meat for the interior with these singings. great great value.

Overview

Surrounded by diminutive receivers in Anthony Alridge and Donnie Avery, Harvey was an inviting target in tight quarters for Cougar quarterbacks since joining the team in 2005. He is certainly not a speed merchant, but he catches nearly every ball thrown to him and is quite effective using his long reach on fades and bubble screens to keep the ball away from defenders.

Harvey has good versatility, as he has lined up in the slot, at split end and also at flanker. He spent one season away from the game after high school, but the lure of football saw him enroll at Dodge City Community College. Two years later, he arrived on Houston's campus to give the team the quality possession-type receiver it sorely lacked. With Harvey contributing greatly to the cause, the Cougars played in the postseason in each of Harvey's three seasons with the team.

At Andrew Jackson High School, Harvey earned first-team All-Gateway Conference honors as a senior in 2001. He had 20 receptions for 400 yards and six touchdowns that year, leading the team to an 11-1 record. He did not play football or attend school in 2002, enrolling at Dodge City College for the 2003 spring semester.

Harvey red-shirted at Dodge City in 2003, but took over split end duties the following season. He earned All-Kansas Jayhawk Conference honors, as he led the team with 52 receptions for 956 yards (18.4 avg) and 13 touchdowns in 2004.

Transferring to Houston in 2005, Harvey started four of 11 games at slot receiver, coming up with 258 yards and a touchdown on 14 grabs. As a junior, he earned All-Conference USA honorable mention. He ranked third on the team with 41 receptions for 671 yards (16.4 avg) and four touchdowns while starting 11 contests at split end. He also intercepted a pass vs. Tulsa in the waning moment of the first half, returning the ball 24 yards.

Harvey again earned All-Conference USA honorable mention as a senior. Starting all 13 games at split end, he finished second on the squad with a career-high 55 catches for 673 yards (12.2 avg) and three touchdowns. He also carried twice for 6 yards.

In 38 games at Houston, Harvey started 28 contests. He made 110 catches for 1,602 yards (14.6 avg) and eight touchdowns. He carried twice for 6 yards and also gained 24 yards on one interception return.

Analysis

Positives: Has a lean, well-built, muscular frame with defined shoulders and arms, thick chest, long arms, narrow hips, tight waist and long limbs...His frame can carry at least another 15 pounds of bulk without it affecting his quickness... Presents an inviting and big, physical targets for the quarterback, as he has possibly the best hands in his league and shows very good ease-of-movement adjusting to the ball in flight...Durable athlete who has never missed game action due to injuries...Lacks great speed and creativity as a route runner, but is smooth in his stride and compensate for a lack of blazing speed by gaining big yardage with his long legs...Natural hands catcher with the reach and skills to catch the ball outside his framework...Uses his size quite well to shield the ball from defenders...Has good plant-and-drive agility to come out of his breaks cleanly...Has excellent balance and body control extending for the ball along the sidelines...Shows good "con" in him with his double moves and head fakes to sell the route and get the cornerback to come out of his backpedal too early...When he gathers at the top of the route, he has the loose hips to quickly change direction...More of a power-oriented route runner who will drive through defenders rather than try to out-finesse them when trying to separate...Very effective using his size on drag routes, fades and bubble screens...Even though he has not found the end zone regularly, he is effective at getting to tough catches in the red zone along the boundaries (needs to improve his physicality going over the middle)...Shows above average body control and flexibility to adjust to the high throws and despite his tall frame, he uses his long arms well to scoop up the passes at his shoestrings...Not going to win any foot races in the open field, but when he squares his shoulders and covers the ball up, he can fight for extra yardage...More of a position type of blocker, but is a good stalker working into the second level and will generally sustain his blocks working on the edge...Alert to pocket pressure and works back to the quarterback with good urgency.

Negatives: Might lack the suddenness you look for in a split end, but his frame can carry additional bulk for a possible shift to motion tight end...Lacks any sort of suddenness, but is a smooth runner...Despite his size, he can be rerouted vs. a physical jam and needs to be more aggressive fighting for position to get to throws over the middle...Does not have that sudden initial step to surprise a cornerback coming out of his stance...Defenders have good success tying him up when he fails to keep his hands active and lets the opponent get into his body to reroute...Has marginal acceleration and this could limit him to only being used on controlled routes at the NFL level...Good position blocker, but for a player of his size, he should be more physical and use his long reach and punch to attack the opponent...Needs more than a few reps to retain plays, but once he gets it, it doesn't have to be repeated...Seems to lack a little confidence and will need to have a patient mentor help him discover his abilities.

Compares To: HANK BASKETT-Philadelphia...Like Baskett, Harvey is not a speed merchant, but his work along the sidelines, along with his height, reach and extension makes him an inviting target on fades, bubble screens and drag routes. He is a good position blocker, but needs to get more physical taking on defenders in-line and must use his natural strength better to defeat the press, as defenders have good success rerouting him. There are few jump-ball battles that he will lose and quarterbacks have to love his field awareness, as he's their best friend working back to the ball when the pocket is pressured.

Career Notes

For his complete college career, Harvey started 37 of 47 games, coming up with 162 receptions for 2,558 yards (15.8 avg) and 21 touchdowns...Returned an interception 24 yards, recorded one solo tackle, carried the ball three times for 7 yards (2.3 avg) and had one kickoff return for 10 yards as a collegian.

Used his large frame to shield defenders on slants. Can stamp and get into his out route, providing a nice target on the sideline. Really sold an inside run fake well, but did not have the quickness to find an open spot for the QB to get him the ball.

During the season opener at Oregon on Sept. 1, the Jacksonville, Fla., native tied with teammate Donnie Avery for game-high honors with six receptions and added 41 yards.
