I have heard JDR talk about James Wyche and how much the team likes him. I have not heard the same expectations regarding Mincey.

I think that Wyche and Hayward will rotate at the LDE position with Groves and Harvey rotating at the RDE position.

I can't wait to see the Jags using all four of these guys in a pass rush situation much like the Giants did during their Super Bowl run. Perhaps throw in Landri in lieu of Wyche at one of the DT's.

Wyche will not be released or traded. Might be IR'd, possibly PS'd, but he'll still be a part of the Jags. I'm willing to bet the farm that he's the eventual starting DE opposite Harvey.

Wyche displayed good bullrushing ability to get to the QB last training camp and pre-season, as well as the ability to stop the run, and some pass-rushing moves. He was then placed on IR for a "Groin" injury, a move which I was never a fan of because I thought it was wasting a year of development. I then read that while on IR, Wyche spent the year bulking up around 20 lbs I think it was.

Now, I never saw Wyche as a DPR to begin with, but bulking up that much surely won't make you one. Last guy to bulk up quite a bit was Rob Meier last off-season, and we saw how that turned out.

Add in the Hawkins to LB move, from Stigma's post...

How many DE's will they carry on the core 53 man roster? I would imagine no more than 5 (the 5th only if he has real ST value). The main four would now be Spicer, Hayward, Harvey, and Groves. I would assume the 5th spot is a battle between Hawkins, Smith, Wyche and Mincey.

If Smith is not 105% by the start of camp, I could see them placing him on an IR status again. Hawkins is a DPR; I can't see him beating out the LBs on the roster for the last of those spots. Mincey won't make it. The growth of Wyche is an unknown.

If two of these guys (between Hawkins, Smith, Wyche and Mincey) really play well in camp/pre-season, it would not shock me to see them trade or release Hayward.

I still like Wyche over Mincey. I think it could come down between those two for a roster spot.

I believe that for Smith and/or Hawkins to make this roster, it'll have to be on Special Teams and as Linebackers. With the addition of Groves, the DPR position is locked down. I can't see the staff sticking with Smith or Hawkins at DE over Wyche and Mincey, with the new guys on board.

What I wonder about is if Smith isn't 100%, would they put him on IR again this year, rather than cut him? Once again, a jar-on-the-shelf.

Yeah. It would be nice to see him in camp this year for multiple reasons.

Well, Hicken isn't really known to be buddy buddy and break information. I've heard nothing about them being disappointed with his work ethic. I've heard he's working too hard and trying to come back too quickly.

That's weird, because I heard he was having a hard time healing up because he was working too hard and slowing the recovery. I don't remember where I heard that though.[/quote]

Mac and Ballou had something to say about it last week when a caller called in about Brian Smith.

We all knew when Smith came in there was a chance he may not play again.

Excellent point Stigma. With all of this draft talk, Brian Smith had escaped my mind for the moment. If he can come back healthy, that would be a HUGE boost for our pass rush. This is a kid that had 31.5 sacks in his college career.

With all the hoopla that everyone is experiencing over the Pass Rush DEs drafted this weekend, there is a forgotten man in the background that may have just as big an impact as the two players drafted yesterday. Who is this player? How soon we forget or have we?

Brian Smith OLB/DE Missouri

STRENGTHS

This kid (before he got injured) was as good coming out as DeMarcus Ware was when he came out. In fact, he was better. He is smart and can play more than one position and is a pass rushing demon. He has the body type that could easily add on 20 to 30 more pounds without it affecting he speed or quickness. He reminded me a lot of Julius Peterson (OLB Seattle Seahawks). Brian has excellent change of direction skills, speed and burst. He showed leadership skills and was a head up, wrap up, squeeze and drive tackler. He had a variety of pass rushing moves and could take a game over whenever he wanted to. If Brian had not broken his hip, I would have considered him a top ten pick in this draft.

NEEDS TO IMPROVE

The very first question for the team that might be still interested in drafting this kid is whether or not he can pass a physical. Then, of course, you have to see how far along he is in his rehab and ask a doctor if there are going to be any repercussions and physical limitations from a broken hip.

TALENT BOARD ROUND: 1/ Injury Flag

If this kid has the ability to come back from this injury without any significant problems, you are adding to your team a player that can be as impactful as Julian Peterson or Jason Taylor are to their teams. This kid was the real deal and I think he would have been the top OLB in this draft. He is a leader and plays the game with character, intelligence, passion and talent. He understands situational football and makes the players around him better. It was very upsetting to see a kid with this much talent who played football with such passion go down with an injury like this. I’m guessing with the right doctor and rehab, it might take some time for him to heal correctly, but if a doctor says that he should have no problems playing football after he is fully healed, then this kid is worth the wait and a pick in the second day of this draft. You are not going to see this kid’s name on any board right now unless he can workout for a team on his college pro day. If he can work out, then I’m going to guess that he might show up as a 6^th or 7^th round pick. If I were a team that had some extra picks in third, fourth or fifth rounds, I would check this kid out and think hard about drafting him. I mean, if you can waste a third round pick on a kid like Maurice Clarett or any other player with obvious off field character problems, I would think that it would be worth it to draft Brian coming off a broken hip! Let’s weight the two together for a minute and make a decision. Drafting a player who is about to go to jail or … drafting a player coming off an injury. You be the judge.

If this guy checks out and his weight is up close to 255 Lbs then the Jags may have two speed rushers in Groves and Smith and two power DEs in Harvey and Hayward. Wouldn't that be nice.
