I got to give a mock draft with more wacky trades because the draft board is getting a bit dull.
Rd 1(26): Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College

If he gets past the Steelers then he will be the Jags pick and will be given a year to ready himself to become the teams next OLT in 2009.

TRADE: Jags trade Picks 58 (Rd 2) and 89 (Rd 3) to the Falcons for Picks 48 (Rd 2), 138 (Rd 5) and 212 (Rd7).

Rd 2(48): Calais Campbell - DE - Miami

The Jags consider taking Campbell in Rd 1 but when he slides in Rd 2 the Jags jump up and trade with the Falcons to grab him.

Rd 3(71): Red Bryant - DT - Texas A&M

Jags take a space-eater that will fit into the DT rotation spot vacated by Marcus Stroud.

TRADE: Jags trade Matt Jones to the Bengals for Pick 112 in Rd 4.

Rd 4(112): Dexter Jackson - PR/WR - Appalachian State

Jags take a Punt Returner and slot WR in an attempt to replace Dennis Northcutt.

Rd 4(125): Steve Slaton - RB - West Virginia

Jags jump on this specialty RB that will be in the same backfield with MoJo on 3rd down and long plays. A poor man Reggie Bush type RB that is really a better recieving RB than a pounder. Mojo will be kept from running back kickoffs to protect him and his legs so this function will fall to Steve Slaton.

Rd 5(138): Gary Guyton - OLB - Ga. Tech

Jags grab another LB from Ga. Tech that can play all three LB spots and is pretty good in pass coverage and is very good at blitzing the QB.

Rd 5(143): Jack Ikegwuonu - CB/S - Wisconsin

Jags draft a CB/FS prospect that will be placed on IR for the 2008 season so he can be ready to compete for a roster spot in 2009.

Rd 5(158): Dennis Dixon - QB - Oregon

Jags take their future 2nd string QB who will be placed on IR for the 2008 season and be ready for the the 2009 season.

Rd 5(159): Gary Barnidge - TE - Louisville

A very good recieving TE that will need to learn to block better. His hands are exceptional and his speed is better than that of Marcedes Lewis.

Rd 7(212): Chris Horton - SS - UCLA

Jags take a big hitter to compete for the SS spot behind Gerald Sensabaugh. Horton has good speed but has had wrist injuries that may be the reason this talented player falls this far in the draft.

RE: Would This Work?
pcjagfan1146 (4/9/2008)
Titans are more likely to take Groves than Campbell.
I am now thinking the Titans will take a WR and Campbell and Groves both will fall to the Jags. `Big slow guy or small quick guy. I may not be the best draft analyst, but all of those picks seem pretty bad.

RE: Would This Work?

Players Rising and Falling as projected by Josh Buchanan:
Rising:

Rd 3- 3-66 Kansas City- WR/RS Dexter Jackson, Appalachian State, 5’9, 179, 4.37

Falling:

Rd 6-20-186 Washington- OT Carl Nicks, Nebraska , 6’5, 341, 5.15

RE: Would This Work?
Stigma (4/8/2008)
Here is a 7 Rd Mock draft from a guy whose Dad almost invented the Mock Draft at ProFootballWeekly.

Check it out and note where some players fall:

http://nfldraftguys.com/features/08_mock_draft_buchanan_080408.php
Which players are you wanting us to check out? He is more suited for an OLB in a 3-4 scheme IMO. Too small at DE in a 4-3 scheme for my liking. Yes, I know what Dwight Freeney has done. He is the rare exception though. Carl Nicks will most likely go in the early 2nd round or no later than the middle 2nd. Several teams need OT help. IMO, #89 is too high for Dexter Jackson. I really hope we don't waste a 4th round pick on Ikegwuonu. We don't need another hurt player who is a "jar on the shelf". Steve Slaton has dropped some, but he will be gone before the late 5th round. We are going to need to take one at some point in the draft for depth if nothing else. IMO, we need one early. How about something like this?

1. DT Kentwan Balmer-- although I don't think this is a position of huge need, the Jags could be looking to the future with this pick. Henderson and Meier are not getting any younger. Who knows if McDaniel will be productive. If there is no DE we like and Kenny Phillips is gone, Balmer could be the pick. I don't like DT this high due to the pretty good depth we have at the position, but it may be the best option when the time comes. Who would be the odd man out if we only kept 4 DT's?

2. S Tyrell Johnson-- I was not sold on this guy when people first mentioned him, but after seeing some clips of him play and reading about how is he climbing the boards, he looks like a solid 2nd rounder. IMO, we need help at Safety in a big way. At Strong Safety Sensabaugh has issues with both shoulders and we are one twisted ankle away from having Fudge start at Free Safety. Johnson can play both Safety positions and is said to be a great tackler against the run.

3. DE Jeremy Thompson-- another guy moving up the boards after some pretty good workouts. May not be the best option at DE, but after the top 3 DE's are gone, the gap between the talent level seems to narrow.

3. TE Kellen Davis-- Do we really need a TE this high? Yes. Wrighster has been a playmaker at times, but his knee may keep him from being very productive this year. Ultimately, that could cost him his roster spot. Davis is big (6-6, 265), fast (4.6) and a good blocker. Sounds like a fit for our offense.

Those picks would cover the 4 biggest needs of this team as I see them. The remaining picks could be used for RB, OL, LB, and another DB.

RE: Would This Work?

After listening to Wayne Weaver suggest that the Jags are indeed close to signing David Garrard long term, I can only assume that David and his agent have come down a bit from their lofty demands to the point where a deal makes sense for both parties. I am happy if that happens because I want this team to succeed long term.
Assuming that David Garrard is signed prior to the draft, then drafting Brian Brohm in Rd 1 does not make as much sense as it would if the two parties could not come to terms. Accordingly, here is my latest projection:

Rd 1(26): Gosder Cherilus - OT - Boston College

I believe that the Jags have had their eye on this guy for a while. He could be a dominant OLT if he could forget about the times when he is occasionally defeated by the opposing DE. No doubt he is currently a dominant run blocker and putting him at the OLT spot would definitely improve the run blocking on that side of the line. Given the dominance of the Jags current running game and with the prospect that it could be even more dominant with Cherilus at the OLT spot, the Jags decide that they can live with his less than dominant pass blocking abilities for now.

Rd 2(58): Red Bryant - DT - Texas A&M

He may not be flashy but he is a rock in the middle of the defensive line that just can not be rooted out. His run stuffing ability will allow the Jags to use three pass rushers to collapse the pocket.

Rd 3(71): Jeremy Thompson - DE - Wake Forrest

This guy is a late riser that has pass rush ability but can also hold the point of attack.

Rd 3(89): Dexter Jackson - PR/WR - Appalachian State

Jags move to improve their punt return game and potentially allow the Jags to dump Dennis Northcutt's contract. Jackson offers big play ability in the return game and the short area quickness to take over the slot WR spot.

Rd 4(125): Gary Guyton - OLB - Ga. There is a good chance that 2008 is the last year that Mike Peterson is with the team, and Guyton can play all three of the LB spots as well as rush the passer.

Rd 5(143): Jack Ikegwuonu - CB - Wisconsin

Jags look to add a jar to the shelf for the 2009 season. Ikegwuonu is a mid Rd 2 value that is coming off an ACL injury. I would not be that upset if that were to happen. If we take a safety (Phillips) in the 1st and then get Taylor with the trade in the 2nd, the rest of the draft would be smooth sailing and filled with lots of BAPs. I think we need to draft a safety in there some where. Maybe even two. I mean which position do we have better depth at right now? DT or Safety? If Phillips and Brohm are available, I think we go with Phillips. Now if Phillips is gone, and the top 4 DE's are gone, Brohm is an outside possibility as BAP. I mentioned Brohm last month as our first round pick if he was there. But after I thought about it, I changed my mind. What kind of message would that send to Garrard and the fans who are just starting to really embrace him as the leader of the team. Not a good one.

RE: Would This Work?
pcjagfan1146 (4/2/2008)
Yes, that would work, jagabc. I'm thinking about JDR's press conference where he said not only are we going to draft a DE, but that we are going to draft a DT somewhere down the road for depth. I just don't see us as needing a DT for depth. If we need a DT, it's as a starter. Maybe we will get another DT in round 5, but I tend to think that it will be no later than our 1st choice in round 3. If Balmer slides to 26 as it looks like he may, then he could be the Jags first round selection. I would feel better, though, with Bryant or Rubin in round 2.

I just don't feel good about drafting at 26. Maybe if Atlanta doesn't get their QB in round 1, we could trade our 1 and 4 for two of their 2's. Does that make sense on the trade value chart? I haven't looked it up. Both teams would gain value.
I don't know if it makes sense on the trade value chart, but I just don't think Atlanta would do that. They can probably get either Brohm, Henne or Flacco with their first pick in round 2. They need lots of players in different positions, so I don't see them giving up any early draft picks. You have to remember they traded DeAngelo Hall, so they will have to draft a CB early. They could get a DT, QB, CB, OT in the first 2 rounds by using all their current picks.

As far as a DT for us, I think we draft one later in the draft, not early. We will already have a pretty good four man rotation with Henderson, Meier, McDaniel and Landri. Why draft a guy early who would probably be #5?

RE: Would This Work?

Yes, that would work, jagabc. Brohm can make all throws and his arm is as big or bigger than anyone in this draft.

If he is available when the Jags select at Pick 26, then he will be the BAP and worthy of the selection.

The Salary Cap may be over and done with in two years and when that happens the Jags can't be on the hook for big dollars on anybody. In all honesty even if they signed DG to a 100 million dollar contract i think that hene falling where he will and in my oppinion really being a top ten talent offer tremendous value.

RE: Would This Work?

1 (26). Quentin Groves OLB/DE Auburn 6'3 259- the "real deal" edge rusher that Del Rio has hoped to have with picks like Cordova, Smith and Hawkins.
2 (58). Red Bryant DT Tx A&M 6'4 318- rotational big body to replace Stroud.

3 (71). Tyrell Johnson SS/FS Ark St 6'0 207- 4.4 speed, good ball skills, and broke all-time conference record for tackles.

3 (89). Josh Johnson QB San Diego 6'3 213- 43 TD against 1 interception last season, along with 4.5 speed...great developmental guy.

4 (125). Jamar Adams SS Michigan 6'2 212- great depth at safety and a great hitter for special teams.

5 (143). Frank Okam DT Texas 6'5 347- rotational scheme would fit him well for needed breathers. This pick provides the Jags with a potential starter at Strong Safety, and at the very least some much needed depth at both Safety positions.

2. DE Jason Jones, Eastern Mich, 6-5, 273, 4.74- Del Rio stated the Jags would not reach in the first round for a DE. That could be a hint. Jason Jones may not start immediately, but he will add some much needed pressure on the QB and has lots of upside. I think the Jags also draft another DE or trade for one from another team before the season starts.

3. OT Anthony Collins, Kansas, 6-5, 317- drafted to compete with Khaliff Barnes at LT and to add overall depth to OL. This pick could come in the 2nd round if Jason Jones is not available.

3. TE John Carlson, Notre Dame, 6-5, 255, 4.75- the Jags are surprised when this highly rated TE drops this far in the draft. They snatch him up as an upgrade to Wrighster, who may still be recovering from his knee injury. Marcedes Lewis, John Carlson and Greg Estandia.. looks like a great trio at TE.
