| http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3578588Updated: September 9, 2008, 6:45 PM ET San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will be placed on injured reserve so he can undergo total reconstructive surgery on his knee, a Chargers source and a source close to Merriman told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Merriman was attempting to play this season with two torn ligaments in his left knee. The knee problem dates back to the end of the 2007 season. Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.

| Just saw that. That is a blow to their D and to thier team for sure. they have a guy ready to go, but you can't just replace a guy like Merriman. He is a freak.

| its a shame, but sad thing is when 4 DOCTORS tell you its career threatening why would you play?
cmon man, thats a potential HOF player why would he risk something he has worked his entire life?

In case anyone needs a clue.
Pick a number between 1 and 100, Add 52, Now subtract 7, Add 4, Subtract 13, Subtract the number you started with, Divide by 2, Add 7, Multiply by 4 then subtract 9 ... Viola there's your clue.

| It was foolish of him to play with such a high risk of injury.
All players face a career ender each time they take the field. There is no need to put the odds even further against you. That said, part of me wants to give Merriman props for wanting to play anyway.
He did end up on IR though, and it's obvious the Chargers FO had a say here.
It's for the best.
What a crazy year for injuries.
