declinometer (5/13/2008)
40 (5/13/2008) Declineometer, so I should officially abort any attempt to dialogue with you on this? Are you purposely avoiding my questions? I'm not being negative, just asking you to clarify your position.1. I read one question in what you wrote. I think. Before last season, there were many questions regarding RW progression. To deny that means that you are a new Jaguar fan or just don't pay attention. 2. That was brought up in a list of items that COULD be a hindrance to Matts development from college QB to NFL receiver.
Was that the question you wanted answered. Please answer before Cunningham jumps in. 1. Are you being serious? My first post to you consists of multiple questions. 2. You didn't phrase that as something that could be a hindrance. Furthermore, what RW does has no bearing on MJ. If MJ plays better, MJ gets the nod and based on past experience MJ was given every opportunity to maintain a starting position. My valid take MJ hasn't improved since his 4 TDs last year is less than his season high of 5. Furthermore, RW too had to deal with a QB controversy and yet he managed to explode last year. In comparison, MJ hasn't progressed. When RW was benched he worked harder. When MJ was benched we heard requests for a trade. Here is my first post. I have highlighted the multiple questions. So if I have taken a hit during a football game I am allowed a higher level of credibility? OK. Since I have many memories of being blind sided by a blocking fullback or TE let me add to this discussion. Your insistance that MJ was our 2nd leading TD WR is false as he was tied for that honor with DN. I'm still not sure why you fail to validate MJ's demotion by JDR. Is that agenda driven or production driven? It is well documented that RW works harder than MJ and that work paid off in RW having a fine season w\10 TDs and playing in every game save week 1.Your argument, the "wait and see" argument, is fine and fair, however by offering up the roster spot you take it away from someone else. If my option is to sign a DE or DT or OT that has potential and that means cutting someone who do I look to? The player that underperforms and lacks a respected work ethic. Coaches note it, players note it and yet you would have the team continue to work with "Jesus Jones" in order to maximize that potential. What an utterly ridiculous and counter-productive position to take from, at the very least, a business stand point. I pay to be entertained by this team, and hence my money is a component of his salary. If he isn't performing I don't want my dollars in his pocket. As a human being I would love for this kid to show what we all hoped he would. Lastly, regarding you're "Leftwich\Garrard" argument, why is it that you weren't willing to allow more time for Byron to develop? Why is this patience only justified for MJ? Oh, good. Since you're back, maybe you can answer the questions that 40 asked you. ...decline? You still there?

| I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I actually agree with most of what declinometer is saying about Matt Jones.
Yes, his body language and lack of hustle/intensity do frustrate the hell out of me but you can't spend 3 years developing a guy and just bail on him like that. I think people tend to forget that JDR has praised MJ for his practicing ethic. It just seems when the lights go on on gamedays, he tends to disappear.
Everybody was yelling and screaming to get rid of Reggie Williams, and that turned out okay. I think another year with Todd Monkin (sp?) and more pressure because of a loaded depth chart he could finally show why he was a first round pick.
Another nugget people overlook is that Jerry Porter was a college QB (yes I realize he has a better work ethic and probably is a better athlete too) he just had the luxury of learning under Tim Brown and Jerry Rice for his first few years.
Matt Jones had Ken frickin' Anderson (A former QB/QB coach) teaching him his craft. That says something right there, to me
For the people earlier in the thread that said they hated him his rookie year, I was the exact opposite. He made some great plays as a rookie and I thought that was just the surface of his potential. Everybody loved him starting with that catch against Miami in the preseason game of '05.
I think getting rid of him now would be a mistake. Make him earn the roster spot and I think everything will work itself out. He pisses me off sometimes, but he is still a Jaguar and I will root for him no matter what.
Just my 2 cents
Go Jags!

Uhhh, I think you must be forgetting. Matt was called out in a press conference by JDR and inactivated for several games last year because of his 'practicing ethic'. I'm not sure thats praise. |

| Lastly, regarding you're "Leftwich\Garrard" argument, why is it that you weren't willing to allow more time for Byron to develop? Why is this patience only justified for MJ?
I am not sure what "Leftawich/Garrard argument you're talking about. With regards to your other question it was obvious to me that Leftawich was an egotistical player the had absolutely zero talent. Matt Jones has an abundance of talent that NO ONE denies. Again, I never attacked Leftawich until I was attacked for preferring to see Garrard get a legitimate shot. I also bit back when Garrard was attacked because it was clear to many of us that Garrard had much more talent.
As you can see I have attacked no other players in my defense of Matt Jones unlike the ex Leftawich lovers. You see, the shoe is on the other foot and I prefer to remain civil.
