I hope to God that it means that we are NOT going to draft that stiff with our 1st round pick.

Let the Redskins be suckers and take him.

I'm not for drafting Merling at all, but how many of his games have you actually seen?

Have you studied and dissected his film?

You can't call the guy a stiff and project him to be a "Paul Spicer type" guy.

I would take as many "Paul Spicer type stiffs" as I could get my hands on.

Look, Paul Spicer is a good player.

However, how long did it take Paul Spicer to become the player he is now?

Also, while Spicer is a good player - don't you want MORE than what Paul Spicer gives from a FIRST ROUND draft selection?

Jeez....have we all become so NUMB from the 5 years of sh-- in the first round from James Harris, that our expectations for first rounders has sunk that low?

Coughlin got FIVE pro bowl level players from his 8 first rounders (Taylor/ Bos/ Hardy/ Henderson/ Stroud

Some of them went on to be some of the best players at their position in NFL history.

Now, were "satisfied" with getting Paul Spicer type production from our 1st rounders.??

My God, how the bar that was set so high has fallen. We are now "complacent" with mediocrity.

Thank you, Mr James Harris, you &^%$(!!!

TMD, have you seen the talent in this draft class?

The talent drops off SIGNIFICANTLY after around #20 overall.  This is a terribly weak draft.  The player we pick at #26 is not going to be dominant.

Now, if the guy we take can pump out 7-10 sacks a year (Spicer #'s) then I'd definitely be satisfied with that.

Now to your constant bashing of your "team's" fanbase.

When we were mediocre (2000-2004) what were our attendance numbers?  Do you think fans were satisfied with mediocrity?  Absolutely not.

Do you think Jags fans sit at home and say..."Man I hope we play above .500 ball and have a shot at the playoffs."  Absolutely not.  WE Jags fans want the best.  We want a Super Bowl more than anything in the world.  So please, enough with the "Jags fans are satisfied with mediocrity" crap.

1. IMT, c'mon man, you're smarter than that, (I think). I used "mediocrity" in this instance (this topic) in terms of what I see to be the perceived fans expectation level/ acceptance level for our first round selections of late.

2. Paul Spicer wasn't the player he is now, right away. Look how many years it took him to attain the production level he's given us the past 2-3 seasons.

I don't see Merling giving this team 7-10 QB sacks per year right away, if ever.

I think a guy like Calais Campbell could give us that right away, as well as keeping up his end of the bargain in run support.

I see Campbell as a player who has the potential to be dominant in this league. I'm not swayed by his poor combine/ workout numbers, because unlike Merling, Campbell HAS put up monster numbers on the field, even if it was a season ago. Campbell has the size and has the athleticism to be dominant in the NFL as well. Merling isn't.

Why is everyone so high on Merling? Because Mel Kiper and some other talking heads rank him high?

People are selling Campbell short. Some team is going to get a steal with him.

Congratulations to the 2008 WORLD Champions, your Philadelphia Phillies!

Unlike Spicer, Merling could do it from the moment he steps on the field in Jacksonville.

And, he's got much more upside.

Merling won't likely fall to us anyway, so if that's the case we'd have to trade up to get him.

On another note - I simply love how he gives everyone else in the draft process a complete pass when bashing Shack.  Drafting is a Jaguar decision, not a Shack decision.  But, he'll overlook it no matter how much his nose is rubbed in it and single Shack out from the pack when the pick isn't congruent with his wishes.

I really think TMD targeted Merling for his bashing because of the rumors that the Jags are interested in him.  That way if Merling failed, he could say all along that he knew better than Shack.

And of course, TMD has never seen him play a down or broken down his film.

Again...I'm not high on Merling at all.  Neither is "everybody" like you say.  I'm listening to local sports talk as we speak and the talk isn't about Merling (more about JT)

I totally agree with you about Campbell.

Also, can you imagine (if they lined Campbell up next to Henderson) QB's trying to work the short passing game over that half of our D-line?? That would be two 6' 7" monsters with four paws up way high to block intended passes. I can envision many incomplete pass attempts there.

Yet another reason to target Campbell.  I agree 100%

Actually, I am starting to like the idea of Campbell being on our D-Line. But, I think the Redskins are going to jump on him. I have watched Campbell for three years. He has all the tools to be dominant in this league. Last year was an awful year for the Canes boy.

If we get him, I will back this pick 150%!

Somehow I think all the draftniks who have Campbell falling out of the first  round and Merling going between 10-20 know more about those two players than TMD or anyone else here. I understand that they do it for entertainment purposes, but if guys like Mayock didn't know what they were talking about they wouldn't have a job. In my personal opinion, (all draftniks aside) Calais turning in a bad workout tells me he is lazy, I don't care how talented a dude is, if they have no work ethic you got problems. Remind you of a number 18 on our team?  I am a firm believer that work ethic will always out last talent. Anyway, I would be happy with either one of them but I think if we pick Campbell it would be a bit of a reach. I would rather go with Merling because he is higher on every draft value board or mock that I've seen. Campbell didn't even run a sub 5 forty and you want him to be a pass rushing DE? C'mon fellas...
